Psalm 72

Psalm 72[a]

For[b] Solomon.

72 O God, grant the king the ability to make just decisions.[c]
Grant the king’s son[d] the ability to make fair decisions.[e]
Then he will judge[f] your people fairly,
and your oppressed ones[g] equitably.
The mountains will bring news of peace to the people,
and the hills will announce justice.[h]
He will defend[i] the oppressed among the people;
he will deliver[j] the children[k] of the poor
and crush the oppressor.
People will fear[l] you[m] as long as the sun and moon remain in the sky,
for generation after generation.[n]
He[o] will descend like rain on the mown grass,[p]
like showers that drench[q] the earth.[r]
During his days the godly will flourish;[s]
peace will prevail as long as the moon remains in the sky.[t]
May he rule[u] from sea to sea,[v]
and from the Euphrates River[w] to the ends of the earth.
Before him the coastlands[x] will bow down,
and his enemies will lick the dust.[y]
10 The kings of Tarshish[z] and the coastlands will offer gifts;
the kings of Sheba[aa] and Seba[ab] will bring tribute.
11 All kings will bow down to him;
all nations will serve him.
12 For he will rescue the needy[ac] when they cry out for help,
and the oppressed[ad] who have no defender.
13 He will take pity[ae] on the poor and needy;
the lives of the needy he will save.
14 From harm and violence he will defend them;[af]
he will value their lives.[ag]
15 May he live![ah] May they offer him gold from Sheba.[ai]
May they continually pray for him.
May they pronounce blessings on him all day long.[aj]
16 May there be[ak] an abundance[al] of grain in the earth;
on the tops[am] of the mountains may it[an] sway.[ao]
May its[ap] fruit trees[aq] flourish[ar] like the forests of Lebanon.[as]
May its crops[at] be as abundant[au] as the grass of the earth.[av]
17 May his fame endure.[aw]
May his dynasty last as long as the sun remains in the sky.[ax]
May they use his name when they formulate their blessings.[ay]
May all nations consider him to be favored by God.[az]
18 The Lord God, the God of Israel, deserves praise.[ba]
He alone accomplishes amazing things.[bb]
19 His glorious name deserves praise[bc] forevermore.
May his majestic splendor[bd] fill the whole earth.
We agree! We agree![be]

Psalm 119:73-96

י (Yod)

73 Your hands made me and formed me.[a]
Give me understanding so that I might learn[b] your commands.
74 Your loyal followers will be glad when they see me,[c]
for I find hope in your word.
75 I know, Lord, that your regulations[d] are just.
You disciplined me because of your faithful devotion to me.[e]
76 May your loyal love console me,
as you promised your servant.[f]
77 May I experience your compassion,[g] so I might live.
For I find delight in your law.
78 May the arrogant be humiliated, for they have slandered me.[h]
But I meditate on your precepts.
79 May your loyal followers[i] turn to me,
those who know your rules.
80 May I be fully committed to your statutes,[j]
so that I might not be ashamed.

כ (Kaf)

81 I desperately long for[k] your deliverance.
I find hope in your word.
82 My eyes grow tired as I wait for your promise to be fulfilled.[l]
I say,[m] “When will you comfort me?”
83 For[n] I am like a wineskin[o] dried up in smoke.[p]
I do not forget your statutes.
84 How long must your servant endure this?[q]
When will you judge those who pursue me?
85 The arrogant dig pits to trap me,[r]
which violates your law.[s]
86 All your commands are reliable.
I am pursued without reason.[t] Help me!
87 They have almost destroyed me here on the earth,
but I do not reject your precepts.
88 Revive me with[u] your loyal love,
that I might keep[v] the rules you have revealed.[w]

ל (Lamed)

89 O Lord, your instructions endure;
they stand secure in heaven.[x]
90 You demonstrate your faithfulness to all generations.[y]
You established the earth and it stood firm.
91 Today they stand firm by your decrees,
for all things are your servants.
92 If I had not found encouragement in your law,[z]
I would have died in my sorrow.[aa]
93 I will never forget your precepts,
for by them you have revived me.
94 I belong to you. Deliver me!
For I seek your precepts.
95 The wicked prepare to kill me,[ab]
yet I concentrate on your rules.
96 I realize that everything has its limits,
but your commands are beyond full comprehension.[ac]

2 Samuel 3:22-39

Abner Is Killed

22 Now David’s soldiers[a] and Joab were coming back from a raid, bringing a great deal of plunder with them. Abner was no longer with David in Hebron, for David[b] had sent him away and he had left in peace. 23 When Joab and all the army that was with him arrived, Joab was told: “Abner the son of Ner came to the king; he sent him away, and he left in peace!”

24 So Joab went to the king and said, “What have you done? Abner[c] has come to you. Why would you send him away? Now he’s gone on his way![d] 25 You know Abner the son of Ner. Surely he came here to spy on you and to determine when you leave and when you return[e] and to discover everything that you are doing!”

26 Then Joab left David and sent messengers after Abner. They brought him back from the well of Sirah. (But David was not aware of it.) 27 When Abner returned to Hebron, Joab took him aside at the gate as if to speak privately with him. Joab then stabbed him[f] in the abdomen and killed him, avenging the shed blood of his brother Asahel.[g]

28 When David later heard about this, he said, “I and my kingdom are forever innocent before the Lord of the shed blood of Abner son of Ner. 29 May his blood whirl over[h] the head of Joab and the entire house of his father![i] May the males of Joab’s house[j] never cease to have[k] someone with a running sore or a skin disease or one who works at the spindle[l] or one who falls by the sword or one who lacks food!”

30 So Joab and his brother Abishai killed Abner, because he had killed their brother Asahel in Gibeon during the battle.

31 David instructed Joab and all the people who were with him, “Tear your clothes. Put on sackcloth. Lament before Abner!” Now King David followed[m] behind the funeral pallet.[n] 32 So they buried Abner in Hebron. The king cried loudly[o] over Abner’s grave, and all the people wept too. 33 The king chanted the following lament for Abner:

“Should Abner have died like a fool?
34 Your hands[p] were not bound,
and your feet were not put into irons.
You fell the way one falls before criminals.”

All the people[q] wept over him again. 35 Then all the people came and encouraged David to eat food while it was still day. But David took an oath saying, “God will punish me severely[r] if I taste bread or anything whatsoever before the sun sets!”

36 All the people noticed this and it pleased them.[s] In fact, everything the king did pleased all the people. 37 All the people and all Israel realized on that day that the killing of Abner son of Ner was not done at the king’s instigation.[t]

38 Then the king said to his servants, “Do you not realize that a great leader[u] has fallen this day in Israel? 39 Today I am weak, even though I am anointed as king. These men, the sons of Zeruiah, are too much for me to bear![v] May the Lord punish appropriately the one who has done this evil thing!”[w]

Acts 16:16-24

Paul and Silas Are Thrown Into Prison

16 Now[a] as we were going to the place of prayer, a slave girl met us who had a spirit that enabled her to foretell the future by supernatural means.[b] She[c] brought her owners[d] a great profit by fortune-telling.[e] 17 She followed behind Paul and us and kept crying out,[f] “These men are servants[g] of the Most High God, who are proclaiming to you the way[h] of salvation.”[i] 18 She continued to do this for many days. But Paul became greatly annoyed,[j] and turned[k] and said to the spirit, “I command you in the name of Jesus Christ[l] to come out of her!” And it came out of her at once.[m] 19 But when her owners[n] saw their hope of profit[o] was gone, they seized[p] Paul and Silas and dragged[q] them into the marketplace[r] before the authorities. 20 When[s] they had brought them[t] before the magistrates, they said, “These men are throwing our city into confusion.[u] They are[v] Jews 21 and are advocating[w] customs that are not lawful for us to accept[x] or practice,[y] since we are[z] Romans.”

22 The crowd joined the attack[aa] against them, and the magistrates tore the clothes[ab] off Paul and Silas[ac] and ordered them to be beaten with rods.[ad] 23 After they had beaten them severely,[ae] they threw them into prison and commanded[af] the jailer to guard them securely. 24 Receiving such orders, he threw them in the inner cell[ag] and fastened their feet in the stocks.[ah]

Mark 6:47-56

47 When evening came, the boat was in the middle of the sea and he was alone on the land. 48 He[a] saw them straining at the oars, because the wind was against them. As the night was ending,[b] he came to them walking on the sea,[c] for[d] he wanted to pass by them.[e] 49 When they saw him walking on the water[f] they thought he was a ghost. They[g] cried out, 50 for they all saw him and were terrified. But immediately he spoke to them:[h] “Have courage! It is I. Do not be afraid.” 51 Then he went up with them into the boat, and the wind ceased. They were completely astonished, 52 because they did not understand about the loaves, but their hearts were hardened.

Healing the Sick

53 After they had crossed over, they came to land at Gennesaret[i] and anchored there. 54 As they got out of the boat, people immediately recognized Jesus.[j] 55 They ran through that whole region and began to bring the sick on mats to wherever he was rumored to be.[k] 56 And wherever he would go—into villages, towns, or countryside—they would place the sick in the marketplaces,[l] and would ask him if[m] they could just touch the edge of his cloak, and all who touched it were healed.
