Psalm 55

Betrayal by a Friend

For the choir director: with stringed instruments. A Davidic Maskil.

God, listen to my prayer
and do not ignore[a] my plea for help.(A)
Pay attention to me and answer me.(B)
I am restless and in turmoil with my complaint,(C)
because of the enemy’s voice,
because of the pressure[b] of the wicked.
For they bring down disaster on me[c]
and harass me in anger.(D)

My heart shudders within me;(E)
terrors of death sweep over me.
Fear and trembling grip me;
horror has overwhelmed me.(F)
I said, “If only I had[d] wings like a dove!
I would fly away and find rest.(G)
How far away I would flee;
I would stay in the wilderness.(H)Selah
I would hurry to my shelter
from the raging wind and the storm.”(I)

Lord, confuse[e] and confound their speech,[f](J)
for I see violence and strife in the city;
10 day and night they make the rounds on its walls.
Crime and trouble are within it;(K)
11 destruction is inside it;
oppression and deceit never leave its marketplace.(L)

12 Now it is not an enemy who insults me—
otherwise I could bear it;
it is not a foe who rises up against me—
otherwise I could hide from him.
13 But it is you, a man who is my peer,
my companion and good friend!(M)
14 We used to have close fellowship;
we walked with the crowd into the house of God.(N)

15 Let death take them by surprise;(O)
let them go down to Sheol alive,
because evil is in their homes and within them.(P)
16 But I call to God,
and the Lord will save me.(Q)
17 I complain and groan morning, noon, and night,(R)
and He hears my voice.(S)
18 Though many are against me,
He will redeem me from my battle unharmed.(T)
19 God, the One enthroned from long ago,(U)
will hear and will humiliate themSelah
because they do not change
and do not fear God.(V)

20 My friend(W) acts violently
against those at peace with him;(X)
he violates his covenant.(Y)
21 His buttery words are smooth,[g]
but war is in his heart.
His words are softer than oil,
but they are drawn swords.(Z)

22 Cast your burden on the Lord,
and He will sustain you;(AA)
He will never allow the righteous to be shaken.(AB)

23 God, You will bring them down
to the Pit of destruction;(AC)
men of bloodshed and treachery
will not live out half their days.(AD)
But I will trust in You.(AE)

Psalm 138:1-139:23

Psalm 138

A Thankful Heart

Davidic.

I will give You thanks with all my heart;(A)
I will sing Your praise before the heavenly beings.[a](B)
I will bow down toward Your holy temple
and give thanks to Your name
for Your constant love and truth.
You have exalted Your name
and Your promise above everything else.(C)
On the day I called, You answered me;
You increased strength within me.[b](D)

All the kings on earth will give You thanks, Lord,
when they hear what You have promised.[c](E)
They will sing of the Lord’s ways,
for the Lord’s glory is great.(F)
Though the Lord is exalted,
He takes note of the humble;
but He knows the haughty from a distance.(G)

If I walk into the thick of danger,
You will preserve my life
from the anger of my enemies.(H)
You will extend Your hand;
Your right hand will save me.(I)
The Lord will fulfill His purpose for me.(J)
Lord, Your love is eternal;
do not abandon the work of Your hands.(K)

Psalm 139

The All-Knowing, Ever-Present God

For the choir director. A Davidic psalm.

Lord, You have searched me and known me.(L)
You know when I sit down and when I stand up;
You understand my thoughts from far away.(M)
You observe my travels and my rest;
You are aware of all my ways.(N)
Before a word is on my tongue,
You know all about it, Lord.(O)
You have encircled me;
You have placed Your hand on me.(P)
This extraordinary knowledge is beyond me.
It is lofty; I am unable to reach it.(Q)

Where can I go to escape Your Spirit?
Where can I flee from Your presence?(R)
If I go up to heaven, You are there;(S)
if I make my bed in Sheol, You are there.(T)
If I live at the eastern horizon
or settle at the western limits,[d]
10 even there Your hand will lead me;
Your right hand will hold on to me.(U)
11 If I say, “Surely the darkness will hide me,
and the light around me will be night”(V)
12 even the darkness is not dark to You.
The night shines like the day;
darkness and light are alike to You.(W)

13 For it was You who created my inward parts;[e]
You knit me together in my mother’s womb.(X)
14 I will praise You
because I have been remarkably and wonderfully made.[f][g]
Your works are wonderful,
and I know this very well.(Y)
15 My bones were not hidden from You
when I was made in secret,
when I was formed in the depths of the earth.(Z)
16 Your eyes saw me when I was formless;
all my days were written in Your book and planned
before a single one of them began.(AA)

17 God, how difficult[h] Your thoughts are
for me to comprehend;
how vast their sum is!
18 If I counted them,
they would outnumber the grains of sand;(AB)
when I wake up,[i] I am still with You.(AC)

19 God, if only You would kill the wicked—
you bloodthirsty men, stay away from me(AD)
20 who invoke You deceitfully.
Your enemies swear by You falsely.(AE)
21 Lord, don’t I hate those who hate You,
and detest those who rebel against You?
22 I hate them with extreme hatred;
I consider them my enemies.(AF)

23 Search me, God, and know my heart;
test me and know my concerns.(AG)

Joshua 23

Joshua’s Farewell Address

23 A long time after the Lord had given Israel rest from all the enemies around them, Joshua was old, getting on in years. So Joshua summoned all Israel, including its elders, leaders, judges, and officers,(A) and said to them, “I am old, getting on in years, and you have seen for yourselves everything the Lord your God did to all these nations on your account, because it was the Lord your God who was fighting for you.(B) See, I have allotted these remaining nations to you as an inheritance for your tribes, including all the nations I have destroyed, from the Jordan westward to the Mediterranean Sea. The Lord your God will force them back on your account and drive them out before you so that you can take possession of their land,(C) as the Lord your God promised you.

“Be very strong(D) and continue obeying all that is written in the book of the law of Moses, so that you do not turn from it to the right or left and so that you do not associate with these nations remaining among you. Do not call on the names of their gods or make an oath to them;(E) do not worship them or bow down to them. Instead, remain faithful to the Lord your God, as you have done to this day.(F)

“The Lord has driven out great and powerful nations before you,(G) and no one is able to stand against you to this day.(H) 10 One of you routed a thousand(I) because the Lord your God was fighting for you, as He promised.[a](J) 11 So be very diligent to love the Lord your God for your own well-being. 12 For if you turn away and cling to the rest of these nations remaining among you,(K) and if you intermarry or associate with them(L) and they with you, 13 know for certain that the Lord your God will not continue to drive these nations out before you. They will become a snare and a trap for you,(M) a scourge for your sides and thorns in your eyes, until you disappear from this good land the Lord your God has given you.

14 “I am now going the way of all the earth,[b](N) and you know with all your heart and all your soul that none of the good promises the Lord your God made to you has failed. Everything was fulfilled for you; not one promise has failed.(O) 15 Since every good thing the Lord your God promised you has come about, so He will bring on you every bad thing until He has annihilated you from this good land the Lord your God has given you.(P) 16 If you break the covenant of the Lord your God, which He commanded you, and go and worship other gods, and bow down to them, the Lord’s anger will burn against you, and you will quickly disappear from this good land He has given you.”

Romans 15:25-33

25 Right now I am traveling to Jerusalem(A) to serve the saints,(B) 26 for Macedonia(C) and Achaia[a](D) were pleased to make a contribution for the poor among the saints in Jerusalem. 27 Yes, they were pleased, and indeed are indebted to them. For if the Gentiles have shared in their spiritual benefits,(E) then they are obligated to minister to Jews in material needs. 28 So when I have finished this and safely delivered the funds[b] to them,(F) I will visit you on the way to Spain. 29 I know that when I come to you, I will come in the fullness of the blessing[c] of Christ.

30 Now I appeal to you, brothers, through our Lord Jesus Christ and through the love of the Spirit,(G) to join with me in fervent prayers to God on my behalf.(H) 31 Pray that I may be rescued from the unbelievers in Judea,(I) that the gift I am bringing to[d] Jerusalem(J) may be acceptable to the saints,(K) 32 and that, by God’s will,(L) I may come to you with joy(M) and be refreshed together with you.

33 The God of peace be with all of you.(N) Amen.

Matthew 27:11-23

Jesus Faces the Governor

11 Now Jesus stood before the governor.(A) “Are You the King of the Jews?” the governor asked Him.

Jesus answered, “You have said it.”[a](B) 12 And while He was being accused by the chief priests and elders, He didn’t answer.(C)

13 Then Pilate said to Him, “Don’t You hear how much they are testifying against You?” 14 But He didn’t answer him on even one charge, so that the governor was greatly amazed.(D)

Jesus or Barabbas

15 At the festival(E) the governor’s custom was to release to the crowd a prisoner they wanted. 16 At that time they had a notorious prisoner called Barabbas.[b] 17 So when they had gathered together, Pilate said to them, “Who is it you want me to release for you—Barabbas,[c] or Jesus who is called Messiah?”(F) 18 For he knew they had handed Him over because of envy.

19 While he was sitting on the judge’s bench, his wife sent word to him, “Have nothing to do with that righteous man, for today I’ve suffered terribly in a dream because of Him!”(G)

20 The chief priests and the elders, however, persuaded the crowds to ask for Barabbas and to execute Jesus. 21 The governor asked them, “Which of the two do you want me to release for you?”

“Barabbas!” they answered.

22 Pilate asked them, “What should I do then with Jesus, who is called Messiah?”

They all answered, “Crucify Him!”[d](H)

23 Then he said, “Why? What has He done wrong?”

But they kept shouting, “Crucify Him!” all the more.(I)
