Psalm 97

The Majestic King

The Lord reigns! Let the earth rejoice;
let the many coasts and islands be glad.(A)

Clouds and total darkness surround him;
righteousness and justice are the foundation of his throne.(B)
Fire goes before him
and burns up his foes on every side.(C)
His lightning lights up the world;
the earth sees and trembles.(D)
The mountains melt like wax
at the presence of the Lord
at the presence of the Lord of the whole earth.(E)

The heavens proclaim his righteousness;(F)
all the peoples see his glory.(G)

All who serve carved images,
those who boast in worthless idols, will be put to shame.(H)
All the gods[a] must worship him.(I)

Zion hears and is glad,
Judah’s villages[b] rejoice
because of your judgments, Lord.(J)
For you, Lord,
are the Most High over the whole earth;
you are exalted above all the gods.(K)

10 You who love the Lord, hate evil!(L)
He protects the lives of his faithful ones;(M)
he rescues them from the power of the wicked.(N)
11 Light dawns[c][d] for the righteous,
gladness for the upright in heart.(O)
12 Be glad in the Lord, you righteous ones,
and give thanks to his holy name.[e](P)

Psalm 98

Praise the King

A psalm.

Sing a new song to the Lord,(Q)
for he has performed wonders;
his right hand and holy arm
have won him victory.(R)
The Lord has made his victory known;
he has revealed his righteousness
in the sight of the nations.(S)
He has remembered his love
and faithfulness to the house of Israel;
all the ends of the earth
have seen our God’s victory.(T)

Let the whole earth shout to the Lord;
be jubilant, shout for joy, and sing.(U)
Sing to the Lord with the lyre,
with the lyre and melodious song.(V)
With trumpets and the blast of the ram’s horn
shout triumphantly
in the presence of the Lord, our King.(W)

Let the sea and all that fills it,
the world and those who live in it, resound.(X)
Let the rivers clap their hands;
let the mountains shout together for joy(Y)
before the Lord,
for he is coming to judge the earth.
He will judge the world righteously
and the peoples fairly.(Z)

Proverbs 8:22-30

22 “The Lord acquired[a] me
at the beginning of his creation,[b]
before his works of long ago.(A)
23 I was formed[c] before ancient times,
from the beginning, before the earth began.(B)
24 I was born
when there were no watery depths(C)
and no springs filled with water.
25 Before the mountains were established,
prior to the hills,(D) I was given birth—
26 before he made the land, the fields,
or the first soil on earth.
27 I was there when he established the heavens,(E)
when he laid out the horizon on the surface of the ocean,(F)
28 when he placed the skies above,
when the fountains of the ocean gushed out,
29 when he set a limit for the sea
so that the waters would not violate his command,(G)
when he laid out the foundations of the earth.(H)
30 I was a skilled craftsman[d] beside him.(I)
I was his[e] delight every day,
always rejoicing before him.

John 13:20-35

20 Truly I tell you, whoever receives anyone I send receives me, and the one who receives(A) me receives him who sent me.”

Judas’s Betrayal Predicted

21 When(B) Jesus had said this, he was troubled in his spirit(C) and testified,(D) “Truly I tell you, one of you will betray me.”

22 The disciples started looking at one another—uncertain which one he was speaking about. 23 One of his disciples, the one Jesus loved,(E) was reclining close beside Jesus.[a] 24 Simon Peter motioned to him to find out who it was he was talking about. 25 So he leaned back against Jesus and asked him, “Lord, who is it?”

26 Jesus replied, “He’s the one I give the piece of bread to after I have dipped it.”(F) When he had dipped the bread,(G) he gave it to Judas, Simon Iscariot’s son.[b] 27 After Judas ate the piece of bread, Satan(H) entered him. So Jesus told him, “What you’re doing, do quickly.”

28 None of those reclining at the table knew why he said this to him. 29 Since Judas(I) kept the money-bag, some thought that Jesus was telling him, “Buy what we need for the festival,”(J) or that he should give something to the poor. 30 After receiving the piece of bread, he immediately left. And it was night.(K)

The New Command

31 When(L) he had left, Jesus said, “Now the Son of Man(M) is glorified, and God is glorified(N) in him.(O) 32 If God is glorified in him,[c] God will also glorify him in himself and will glorify him at once. 33 Little children, I am with you a little while longer.(P) You will look for me, and just as I told the Jews, so now I tell you, ‘Where I am going, you cannot come.’(Q)

34 “I give you a new command: Love one another. Just as I have loved you, you are also to love one another. 35 By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you love(R) one another.”

Psalm 145

Psalm 145

Praising God’s Greatness

A hymn of David.

I[a] exalt you, my God the King,
and bless your name forever and ever.(A)
I will bless you every day;
I will praise your name forever and ever.(B)

The Lord is great and is highly praised;(C)
his greatness is unsearchable.(D)
One generation will declare your works to the next
and will proclaim your mighty acts.(E)
I[b] will speak of your splendor and glorious majesty
and[c] your wondrous works.(F)
They will proclaim the power of your awe-inspiring acts,
and I will declare your greatness.[d](G)
They will give a testimony of your great goodness
and will joyfully sing of your righteousness.(H)

The Lord is gracious and compassionate,
slow to anger and great in faithful love.(I)
The Lord is good to everyone;(J)
his compassion rests on all he has made.(K)
10 All you have made will thank you, Lord;
the[e] faithful will bless you.(L)
11 They will speak of the glory of your kingdom
and will declare your might,(M)
12 informing all people of your mighty acts
and of the glorious splendor of your[f] kingdom.(N)
13 Your kingdom is an everlasting kingdom;
your rule is for all generations.(O)
The Lord is faithful in all his words
and gracious in all his actions.[g](P)

14 The Lord helps all who fall;
he raises up all who are oppressed.[h](Q)
15 All eyes look to you,
and you give them their food at the proper time.(R)
16 You open your hand
and satisfy the desire of every living thing.(S)

17 The Lord is righteous in all his ways
and faithful in all his acts.(T)
18 The Lord is near all who call out to him,
all who call out to him with integrity.(U)
19 He fulfills the desires of those who fear him;
he hears their cry for help and saves them.(V)
20 The Lord guards all those who love him,
but he destroys all the wicked.(W)
21 My mouth will declare the Lord’s praise;
let every living thing
bless his holy name forever and ever.(X)

1 John 5:1-12

Everyone who believes that Jesus is the Christ has been born of God,(A) and everyone who loves the Father[a] also loves the one born of him. This is how we know that we love God’s children: when we love God and obey[b] his commands. For this is what love for God is: to keep his commands. And his commands are not a burden,(B) because everyone who has been born of God conquers the world. This is the victory that has conquered the world: our faith.

The Certainty of God’s Testimony

Who is the one who conquers the world(C) but the one who believes that Jesus is the Son of God?(D) Jesus Christ—he is the one who came by water and blood, not by water only, but by water(E) and by blood.(F) And the Spirit is the one who testifies,(G) because the Spirit is the truth. For there are three that testify:[c](H) the Spirit,(I) the water, and the blood(J)—and these three are in agreement. If we accept human testimony, God’s testimony(K) is greater, because it is God’s testimony that he has given about his Son. 10 The one who believes in the Son of God has this testimony within himself. The one who does not believe God has made him a liar,(L) because he has not believed in the testimony God has given about his Son. 11 And this is the testimony: God has given us eternal life, and this life is in his Son. 12 The one who has the Son has life.(M) The one who does not have the Son of God does not have life.
