  1. When Reuben heard this, he tried to rescue him from their hands. “Let’s not take his life,” he said.

  18. When Joseph saw his father placing his right hand on Ephraim’s head he was displeased; so he took hold of his father’s hand to move it from Ephraim’s head to Manasseh’s head.
  19. Joseph said to him, “No, my father, this one is the firstborn; put your right hand on his head.”
  20. “Judah, your brothers will praise you; your hand will be on the neck of your enemies; your father’s sons will bow down to you.
  21. But his bow remained steady, his strong arms stayed limber, because of the hand of the Mighty One of Jacob, because of the Shepherd, the Rock of Israel,
  22. So I have come down to rescue them from the hand of the Egyptians and to bring them up out of that land into a good and spacious land, a land flowing with milk and honey—the home of the Canaanites, Hittites, Amorites, Perizzites, Hivites and Jebusites.
  23. But I know that the king of Egypt will not let you go unless a mighty hand compels him.
  24. So I will stretch out my hand and strike the Egyptians with all the wonders that I will perform among them. After that, he will let you go.
  25. “And I will make the Egyptians favorably disposed toward this people, so that when you leave you will not go empty-handed.
