  1. Through him everyone who believes is set free from every sin, a justification you were not able to obtain under the law of Moses.

  12. But Paul said to the officers: “They beat us publicly without a trial, even though we are Roman citizens, and threw us into prison. And now do they want to get rid of us quietly? No! Let them come themselves and escort us out.”
  13. Now the Berean Jews were of more noble character than those in Thessalonica, for they received the message with great eagerness and examined the Scriptures every day to see if what Paul said was true.
  14. Paul then stood up in the meeting of the Areopagus and said: “People of Athens! I see that in every way you are very religious.
  15. For as I walked around and looked carefully at your objects of worship, I even found an altar with this inscription: to an unknown god. So you are ignorant of the very thing you worship—and this is what I am going to proclaim to you.
  16. “The God who made the world and everything in it is the Lord of heaven and earth and does not live in temples built by human hands.
  17. And he is not served by human hands, as if he needed anything. Rather, he himself gives everyone life and breath and everything else.
  18. In the past God overlooked such ignorance, but now he commands all people everywhere to repent.
  19. For he has set a day when he will judge the world with justice by the man he has appointed. He has given proof of this to everyone by raising him from the dead.”
  20. Every Sabbath he reasoned in the synagogue, trying to persuade Jews and Greeks.
  21. and asked them, “Did you receive the Holy Spirit when you believed?” They answered, “No, we have not even heard that there is a Holy Spirit.”
  22. so that even handkerchiefs and aprons that had touched him were taken to the sick, and their illnesses were cured and the evil spirits left them.
  23. Even some of the officials of the province, friends of Paul, sent him a message begging him not to venture into the theater.
  24. The assembly was in confusion: Some were shouting one thing, some another. Most of the people did not even know why they were there.
  25. I served the Lord with great humility and with tears and in the midst of severe testing by the plots of my Jewish opponents.
