The Proclamation of John the Baptist
The beginning of the good news of Jesus Christ, the Son of God.
-
And a voice came from heaven, ‘You are my Son, the Beloved; with you I am well pleased.’
-
As he went a little farther, he saw James son of Zebedee and his brother John, who were in their boat mending the nets.
-
When Jesus saw their faith, he said to the paralytic, ‘Son, your sins are forgiven.’
-
But so that you may know that the Son of Man has authority on earth to forgive sins’—he said to the paralytic—
-
As he was walking along, he saw Levi son of Alphaeus sitting at the tax booth, and he said to him, ‘Follow me.’ And he got up and followed him.
-
so the Son of Man is lord even of the sabbath.’
-
Whenever the unclean spirits saw him, they fell down before him and shouted, ‘You are the Son of God!’
-
James son of Zebedee and John the brother of James (to whom he gave the name Boanerges, that is, Sons of Thunder);
-
and Andrew, and Philip, and Bartholomew, and Matthew, and Thomas, and James son of Alphaeus, and Thaddaeus, and Simon the Cananaean,
-
and he shouted at the top of his voice, ‘What have you to do with me, Jesus, Son of the Most High God? I adjure you by God, do not torment me.’
-
Is not this the carpenter, the son of Mary and brother of James and Joses and Judas and Simon, and are not his sisters here with us?’ And they took offence at him.
-
Jesus Foretells His Death and Resurrection
Then he began to teach them that the Son of Man must undergo great suffering, and be rejected by the elders, the chief priests, and the scribes, and be killed, and after three days rise again.
-
Those who are ashamed of me and of my words in this adulterous and sinful generation, of them the Son of Man will also be ashamed when he comes in the glory of his Father with the holy angels.’
-
Then a cloud overshadowed them, and from the cloud there came a voice, ‘This is my Son, the Beloved; listen to him!’
-
The Coming of Elijah
As they were coming down the mountain, he ordered them to tell no one about what they had seen, until after the Son of Man had risen from the dead.
-
He said to them, ‘Elijah is indeed coming first to restore all things. How then is it written about the Son of Man, that he is to go through many sufferings and be treated with contempt?
-
Someone from the crowd answered him, ‘Teacher, I brought you my son; he has a spirit that makes him unable to speak;
-
for he was teaching his disciples, saying to them, ‘The Son of Man is to be betrayed into human hands, and they will kill him, and three days after being killed, he will rise again.’
-
saying, ‘See, we are going up to Jerusalem, and the Son of Man will be handed over to the chief priests and the scribes, and they will condemn him to death; then they will hand him over to the Gentiles;
-
The Request of James and John
James and John, the sons of Zebedee, came forward to him and said to him, ‘Teacher, we want you to do for us whatever we ask of you.’
-
For the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve, and to give his life a ransom for many.’
-
The Healing of Blind Bartimaeus
They came to Jericho. As he and his disciples and a large crowd were leaving Jericho, Bartimaeus son of Timaeus, a blind beggar, was sitting by the roadside.
-
When he heard that it was Jesus of Nazareth, he began to shout out and say, ‘Jesus, Son of David, have mercy on me!’
-
Many sternly ordered him to be quiet, but he cried out even more loudly, ‘Son of David, have mercy on me!’
