    Now John’s disciples and the Pharisees were fasting. Some people came and asked Jesus, “How is it that John’s disciples and the disciples of the Pharisees are fasting, but yours are not?”
  8. He looked around at them in anger and, deeply distressed at their stubborn hearts, said to the man, “Stretch out your hand.” He stretched it out, and his hand was completely restored.
  9. A crowd was sitting around him, and they told him, “Your mother and brothers are outside looking for you.”
  10. Then Jesus asked him, “What is your name?” “My name is Legion,” he replied, “for we are many.”
  11. Jesus did not let him, but said, “Go home to your own people and tell them how much the Lord has done for you, and how he has had mercy on you.”
  12. He pleaded earnestly with him, “My little daughter is dying. Please come and put your hands on her so that she will be healed and live.”
  13. He said to her, “Daughter, your faith has healed you. Go in peace and be freed from your suffering.”
  14. While Jesus was still speaking, some people came from the house of Jairus, the synagogue leader. “Your daughter is dead,” they said. “Why bother the teacher anymore?”
  15. These were his instructions: “Take nothing for the journey except a staff—no bread, no bag, no money in your belts.
  16. And if any place will not welcome you or listen to you, leave that place and shake the dust off your feet as a testimony against them.”
  17. For John had been saying to Herod, “It is not lawful for you to have your brother’s wife.”
  18. Then, because so many people were coming and going that they did not even have a chance to eat, he said to them, “Come with me by yourselves to a quiet place and get some rest.”
  19. So the Pharisees and teachers of the law asked Jesus, “Why don’t your disciples live according to the tradition of the elders instead of eating their food with defiled hands?”
  20. And he continued, “You have a fine way of setting aside the commands of God in order to observe your own traditions!
  21. For Moses said, ‘Honor your father and mother,’ and, ‘Anyone who curses their father or mother is to be put to death.’
  22. Thus you nullify the word of God by your tradition that you have handed down. And you do many things like that.”
  23. Then he told her, “For such a reply, you may go; the demon has left your daughter.”
  24. Aware of their discussion, Jesus asked them: “Why are you talking about having no bread? Do you still not see or understand? Are your hearts hardened?
  25. Whenever it seizes him, it throws him to the ground. He foams at the mouth, gnashes his teeth and becomes rigid. I asked your disciples to drive out the spirit, but they could not.”
