The Proclamation of John the Baptist
In those days John the Baptist appeared in the wilderness of Judea, proclaiming,
-
He fasted for forty days and forty nights, and afterwards he was famished.
-
Give us this day our daily bread.
-
On that day many will say to me, “Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in your name, and cast out demons in your name, and do many deeds of power in your name?”
-
And Jesus said to them, ‘The wedding-guests cannot mourn as long as the bridegroom is with them, can they? The days will come when the bridegroom is taken away from them, and then they will fast.
-
Truly I tell you, it will be more tolerable for the land of Sodom and Gomorrah on the day of judgement than for that town.
-
From the days of John the Baptist until now the kingdom of heaven has suffered violence, and the violent take it by force.
-
But I tell you, on the day of judgement it will be more tolerable for Tyre and Sidon than for you.
-
And you, Capernaum, will you be exalted to heaven? No, you will be brought down to Hades. For if the deeds of power done in you had been done in Sodom, it would have remained until this day.
-
But I tell you that on the day of judgement it will be more tolerable for the land of Sodom than for you.’
-
I tell you, on the day of judgement you will have to give an account for every careless word you utter;
-
For just as Jonah was for three days and three nights in the belly of the sea monster, so for three days and three nights the Son of Man will be in the heart of the earth.
-
The Parable of the Sower
That same day Jesus went out of the house and sat beside the lake.
-
Feeding the Four Thousand
Then Jesus called his disciples to him and said, ‘I have compassion for the crowd, because they have been with me now for three days and have nothing to eat; and I do not want to send them away hungry, for they might faint on the way.’
-
Jesus Foretells His Death and Resurrection
From that time on, Jesus began to show his disciples that he must go to Jerusalem and undergo great suffering at the hands of the elders and chief priests and scribes, and be killed, and on the third day be raised.
-
The Transfiguration
Six days later, Jesus took with him Peter and James and his brother John and led them up a high mountain, by themselves.
-
and they will kill him, and on the third day he will be raised.’ And they were greatly distressed.
-
And about five o’clock he went out and found others standing around; and he said to them, “Why are you standing here idle all day?”
-
saying, “These last worked only one hour, and you have made them equal to us who have borne the burden of the day and the scorching heat.”
-
then they will hand him over to the Gentiles to be mocked and flogged and crucified; and on the third day he will be raised.’
-
The Question about the Resurrection
The same day some Sadducees came to him, saying there is no resurrection; and they asked him a question, saying,
-
No one was able to give him an answer, nor from that day did anyone dare to ask him any more questions.
-
and you say, “If we had lived in the days of our ancestors, we would not have taken part with them in shedding the blood of the prophets.”
-
Woe to those who are pregnant and to those who are nursing infants in those days!
-
And if those days had not been cut short, no one would be saved; but for the sake of the elect those days will be cut short.
