  1. The Genealogy of Jesus the Messiah

    This is the genealogy of Jesus the Messiah the son of David, the son of Abraham:
  2. Thus there were fourteen generations in all from Abraham to David, fourteen from David to the exile to Babylon, and fourteen from the exile to the Messiah.
  3. “Land of Zebulun and land of Naphtali, the Way of the Sea, beyond the Jordan, Galilee of the Gentiles—
  4. These twelve Jesus sent out with the following instructions: “Do not go among the Gentiles or enter any town of the Samaritans.
  5. On my account you will be brought before governors and kings as witnesses to them and to the Gentiles.
  6. “To what can I compare this generation? They are like children sitting in the marketplaces and calling out to others:
  7. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls.
  8. He answered, “A wicked and adulterous generation asks for a sign! But none will be given it except the sign of the prophet Jonah.
  9. The men of Nineveh will stand up at the judgment with this generation and condemn it; for they repented at the preaching of Jonah, and now something greater than Jonah is here.
  10. The Queen of the South will rise at the judgment with this generation and condemn it; for she came from the ends of the earth to listen to Solomon’s wisdom, and now something greater than Solomon is here.
  11. Then it goes and takes with it seven other spirits more wicked than itself, and they go in and live there. And the final condition of that person is worse than the first. That is how it will be with this wicked generation.”
  12. When they had crossed over, they landed at Gennesaret.
  13. A wicked and adulterous generation looks for a sign, but none will be given it except the sign of Jonah.” Jesus then left them and went away.
  14. “You unbelieving and perverse generation,” Jesus replied, “how long shall I stay with you? How long shall I put up with you? Bring the boy here to me.”
  15. Don’t I have the right to do what I want with my own money? Or are you envious because I am generous?’
  16. and will hand him over to the Gentiles to be mocked and flogged and crucified. On the third day he will be raised to life!”
  17. Jesus called them together and said, “You know that the rulers of the Gentiles lord it over them, and their high officials exercise authority over them.
  18. “Say to Daughter Zion, ‘See, your king comes to you, gentle and riding on a donkey, and on a colt, the foal of a donkey.’”
  19. Truly I tell you, all this will come on this generation.
  20. Truly I tell you, this generation will certainly not pass away until all these things have happened.
  21. When they had crossed over, they landed at Gennesaret and anchored there.
  22. He sighed deeply and said, “Why does this generation ask for a sign? Truly I tell you, no sign will be given to it.”
  23. If anyone is ashamed of me and my words in this adulterous and sinful generation, the Son of Man will be ashamed of them when he comes in his Father’s glory with the holy angels.”
  24. “You unbelieving generation,” Jesus replied, “how long shall I stay with you? How long shall I put up with you? Bring the boy to me.”
  25. “We are going up to Jerusalem,” he said, “and the Son of Man will be delivered over to the chief priests and the teachers of the law. They will condemn him to death and will hand him over to the Gentiles,
