  1. Jesus Begins to Preach

    When Jesus heard that John had been put in prison, he withdrew to Galilee.
  2. “Settle matters quickly with your adversary who is taking you to court. Do it while you are still together on the way, or your adversary may hand you over to the judge, and the judge may hand you over to the officer, and you may be thrown into prison.
  3. When John, who was in prison, heard about the deeds of the Messiah, he sent his disciples
  4. Now Herod had arrested John and bound him and put him in prison because of Herodias, his brother Philip’s wife,
  5. and had John beheaded in the prison.
  6. “But he refused. Instead, he went off and had the man thrown into prison until he could pay the debt.
  7. I needed clothes and you clothed me, I was sick and you looked after me, I was in prison and you came to visit me.’
  8. When did we see you sick or in prison and go to visit you?’
  9. I was a stranger and you did not invite me in, I needed clothes and you did not clothe me, I was sick and in prison and you did not look after me.’

  13. Jesus Announces the Good News

    After John was put in prison, Jesus went into Galilee, proclaiming the good news of God.
  14. For Herod himself had given orders to have John arrested, and he had him bound and put in prison. He did this because of Herodias, his brother Philip’s wife, whom he had married.
  15. So he immediately sent an executioner with orders to bring John’s head. The man went, beheaded John in the prison,
  16. Now it was the custom at the festival to release a prisoner whom the people requested.
  17. A man called Barabbas was in prison with the insurrectionists who had committed murder in the uprising.
  18. Herod added this to them all: He locked John up in prison.
  19. “The Spirit of the Lord is on me, because he has anointed me to proclaim good news to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim freedom for the prisoners and recovery of sight for the blind, to set the oppressed free,
  20. As you are going with your adversary to the magistrate, try hard to be reconciled on the way, or your adversary may drag you off to the judge, and the judge turn you over to the officer, and the officer throw you into prison.
  21. “But before all this, they will seize you and persecute you. They will hand you over to synagogues and put you in prison, and you will be brought before kings and governors, and all on account of my name.
  22. They will fall by the sword and will be taken as prisoners to all the nations. Jerusalem will be trampled on by the Gentiles until the times of the Gentiles are fulfilled.
  23. But he replied, “Lord, I am ready to go with you to prison and to death.”
  24. (Barabbas had been thrown into prison for an insurrection in the city, and for murder.)
  25. He released the man who had been thrown into prison for insurrection and murder, the one they asked for, and surrendered Jesus to their will.
