  12. He warned the assembly, “Move back from the tents of these wicked men! Do not touch anything belonging to them, or you will be swept away because of all their sins.”
  13. They quarreled with Moses and said, “If only we had died when our brothers fell dead before the Lord!
  14. Why did you bring the Lord’s community into this wilderness, that we and our livestock should die here?
  15. Our ancestors went down into Egypt, and we lived there many years. The Egyptians mistreated us and our ancestors,
  16. but when we cried out to the Lord, he heard our cry and sent an angel and brought us out of Egypt. “Now we are here at Kadesh, a town on the edge of your territory.
  17. The Israelites replied: “We will go along the main road, and if we or our livestock drink any of your water, we will pay for it. We only want to pass through on foot—nothing else.”
  18. Then Israel made this vow to the Lord: “If you will deliver these people into our hands, we will totally destroy their cities.”
  19. Our father died in the wilderness. He was not among Korah’s followers, who banded together against the Lord, but he died for his own sin and left no sons.
  20. Why should our father’s name disappear from his clan because he had no son? Give us property among our father’s relatives.”
  21. and said to him, “Your servants have counted the soldiers under our command, and not one is missing.
  22. So we have brought as an offering to the Lord the gold articles each of us acquired—armlets, bracelets, signet rings, earrings and necklaces—to make atonement for ourselves before the Lord.”
  23. If we have found favor in your eyes,” they said, “let this land be given to your servants as our possession. Do not make us cross the Jordan.”
  24. Then they came up to him and said, “We would like to build pens here for our livestock and cities for our women and children.
  25. But we will arm ourselves for battle and go ahead of the Israelites until we have brought them to their place. Meanwhile our women and children will live in fortified cities, for protection from the inhabitants of the land.
