By ·doing what is fair class="inline-note" >[justice], ·Jerusalem class="inline-note" >[class="inline-note" >L Zion; class="inline-note" >C the location of the Temple] will be ·free again class="inline-note" >[redeemed; restored]. By ·doing what is right class="inline-note" >[righteousness], her ·people who come back to the class="small-caps" >Lord class="inline-note" >[penitent/repentant ones; or returnees] will have freedom.

But ·those who turn against him class="inline-note" >[rebels] and sinners will be destroyed; those who ·have left class="inline-note" >[abandon; forsake] the class="small-caps" >Lord will ·die class="inline-note" >[perish; come to an end; cease].

“You will be ashamed, because ·you have worshiped gods under the oak trees class="inline-note" >[class="inline-note" >L of the oaks you have desired; class="inline-note" >C pagan worship sites]. You will be ·disgraced class="inline-note" >[embarrassed], because ·you have worshiped idols in your gardens class="inline-note" >[class="inline-note" >L of the gardens you have chosen; 66:17].

You will be like an oak whose leaves are ·dying class="inline-note" >[withered] or like a garden without water.

Powerful people will ·be class="inline-note" >[or become] like ·small, dry pieces of wood class="inline-note" >[tinder; kindling], and their works will be like sparks. They will burn together, and no one will be able to put out that fire.”

It will be ·raised class="inline-note" >[exalted] above the hills, and ·people from all nations class="inline-note" >[class="inline-note" >L all nations] will come streaming to it.

Many ·nations class="inline-note" >[peoples] will come and say, “Come, let us go up to the mountain of the class="small-caps" >Lord, to the ·Temple class="inline-note" >[class="inline-note" >L house] of the God of Jacob. ·Then class="inline-note" >[or So that] he will teach us his ·ways class="inline-note" >[standards; path], and we will ·obey his teachings class="inline-note" >[class="inline-note" >L walk in his paths].” ·His teachings class="inline-note" >[The Law; Instruction; class="inline-note" >L Torah] will go out from Jerusalem; the ·message class="inline-note" >[word] of the class="small-caps" >Lord will go out from Jerusalem.

He will ·settle arguments among class="inline-note" >[judge/mediate between] the ·nations class="inline-note" >[peoples] and will ·make decisions class="inline-note" >[settle disputes] for many ·peoples class="inline-note" >[nations]. Then they will ·make class="inline-note" >[beat; hammer] their swords into ·plows class="inline-note" >[class="inline-note" >T plowshares; class="inline-note" >C the metal tip of the plow] and their spears into ·hooks for trimming trees class="inline-note" >[pruning hooks]. Nations will no longer ·fight class="inline-note" >[class="inline-note" >L raise the sword against] other nations, nor will they train for war anymore class="inline-note" >[Mic. 4:1–3].

A Terrible Day Is Coming
class="small-caps" >Lord, you have ·left class="inline-note" >[abandoned; rejected] your people, the ·family class="inline-note" >[descendants; class="inline-note" >L house] of Jacob, because they have become filled ·with wrong ideas from people in the East class="inline-note" >[or with superstitions from the East; class="inline-note" >L from the East]. They ·try to tell the future class="inline-note" >[consult soothsayers; practice divination] like the Philistines class="inline-note" >[Lev. 19:26; Deut. 18:9–14], and ·they have completely accepted those foreign ideas class="inline-note" >[or they clasp hands/make alliances with foreigners; or the children of foreigners are everywhere].

Their land has been filled with silver and gold; there ·are a great many class="inline-note" >[class="inline-note" >L is no end/limit to their] treasures there. Their land has been filled with horses; there ·are many class="inline-note" >[class="inline-note" >L is no end/limit to their] chariots there class="inline-note" >[class="inline-note" >C Israel was to rely on God, not on horses and chariots; Deut. 17:16–17].

Their land is full of idols. The people worship ·these idols they made with class="inline-note" >[class="inline-note" >L the work of] their own hands and shaped with their own fingers class="inline-note" >[Rom. 1:23].

People will ·be humbled class="inline-note" >[be brought low; or bow down to worship] and will bow low ·with shame class="inline-note" >[or in worship]. God, do not ·forgive class="inline-note" >[spare; class="inline-note" >L lift] them.

Go into the ·caves of the cliffs class="inline-note" >[class="inline-note" >L rocks]; ·dig holes and hide in the ground class="inline-note" >[class="inline-note" >L hide in the dust/ground] from the ·anger class="inline-note" >[terror; terrible presence] of the class="small-caps" >Lord and from ·his great power class="inline-note" >[the majesty/glory/splendor of his majesty]!

·Proud people class="inline-note" >[class="inline-note" >L The eyes of the proud] will be ·made humble class="inline-note" >[brought down], and ·they class="inline-note" >[human arrogance/loftiness] will ·bow low with shame class="inline-note" >[be humbled]. ·At that time class="inline-note" >[class="inline-note" >L In that day] only the class="small-caps" >Lord will still be ·praised class="inline-note" >[exalted].

The class="small-caps" >Lord ·All-Powerful class="inline-note" >[Almighty; of Heaven’s Armies; class="inline-note" >T of hosts] has a ·certain day planned class="inline-note" >[class="inline-note" >L day] when he will ·punish class="inline-note" >[bring judgment on; turn against] all the proud and all those who ·brag class="inline-note" >[are lifted up], and they will ·no longer be important class="inline-note" >[be humbled/humiliated/brought low].

·He will bring down class="inline-note" >[class="inline-note" >L …against] all the ·tall class="inline-note" >[exalted and mighty/lifted up] cedar trees from Lebanon and all the great oak trees of Bashan,

every ·tall class="inline-note" >[lofty] tower and every ·high, strong class="inline-note" >[fortified] wall,

all the ·trading ships class="inline-note" >[class="inline-note" >L ships of Tarshish; class="inline-note" >C large trading vessels capable of going to distant ports; Tarshish may have been in Spain (Tartessus) or an island in the eastern Mediterranean; 23:1; Jon. 1:3] and the beautiful ·ships class="inline-note" >[vessels].

·Proud people class="inline-note" >[Human pride] will be made humble, and ·they class="inline-note" >[arrogant people] will ·bow low with shame class="inline-note" >[be brought low]. ·At that time class="inline-note" >[class="inline-note" >L In that day] only the class="small-caps" >Lord will be ·praised class="inline-note" >[exalted],

but all the idols will ·be gone class="inline-note" >[disappear; pass away].

People will run to caves in the ·rocky cliffs class="inline-note" >[rocks] and ·will dig holes and hide class="inline-note" >[class="inline-note" >L to holes] in the ground from the ·anger class="inline-note" >[terror; terrible presence] of the class="small-caps" >Lord and ·his great power class="inline-note" >[the majesty/glory/splendor of his majesty; v. 10], when he ·stands class="inline-note" >[rises] to shake the earth.
