Kristus datang ke dunia

1 Pada mulanya, sebelum dunia diciptakan,
    Firman[a] sudah ada.
Firman itu ada dengan Allah,
    dan Firman itu adalah Allah.
2 Sejak semula,
    Firman itu ada bersama Allah.
3 Segala sesuatu diciptakan melalui Firman itu.
    Dan tidak ada satu pun dari semua ciptaan Allah yang diciptakan tanpa Dia.
4 Di dalam Firman itu ada kehidupan,
    dan kehidupan itu adalah terang bagi manusia.
5 Terang[b] itu bercahaya di dalam kegelapan,
    dan kegelapan tidak dapat mengalahkannya.[c]

6 Ada seorang diutus Allah bernama Yohanes.[d] 7 Ia datang untuk memberitahukan orang-orang tentang Terang itu. Tujuannya adalah supaya semua orang mendengar tentang Terang itu dan percaya kepada-Nya. 8 Yohanes sendiri bukanlah Terang itu. Tetapi ia datang memberitakan kepada orang-orang tentang Terang itu.

9 Terang sejati,
    yang memberi terang bagi semua orang,
    akan membuat kehadiran-Nya di dunia.
10 Firman itu telah ada di dunia
    dan dunia diciptakan melalui-Nya,
    tetapi dunia tidak mengenali-Nya.
11 Ia datang ke dunia yang adalah milik-Nya,
    tetapi umat milik-Nya sendiri tidak menerima-Nya.
12 Tetapi banyak orang menerima-Nya
    dan percaya kepada-Nya
    dan Ia memberi mereka hak menjadi anak-anak Allah.
13 Benar, mereka menjadi anak-anak Allah
    bukan melalui kelahiran.
Juga tidak melibatkan keinginan manusiawi.
    Allah sendiri membuat mereka anak-anak-Nya.
14 Firman itu telah menjadi manusia
    dan tinggal di antara kita.
Kita telah melihat kemuliaan-Nya,
    yaitu kemuliaan sebagai Anak Tunggal Bapa.
    Ia dipenuhi dengan anugerah dan kebenaran Allah.

15 Yohanes membicarakan tentang Dia ketika ia membuat pengumuman: “Inilah Dia yang aku bicarakan ketika aku bilang, ‘Ia yang datang setelah aku lebih besar daripadaku, sebab Ia telah ada sebelum aku dilahirkan.’”

16 Ia sangat penuh dengan anugerah dan kebenaran Allah
    yang kita terima dari-Nya satu berkat demi berkat lainnya.[e]
17 Maksudnya, hukum Taurat diberikan kepada kita melalui Musa,
    tetapi anugerah dan kebenaran datang melalui Yesus Kristus.
18 Tiada seorang pun yang pernah melihat Allah.
    Kecuali Anak satu-satu-Nya,
yang adalah Allah sendiri,
    telah menunjukkan kita seperti apakah Allah.
Ia sangat dekat dengan Bapa
    sehingga melihat Dia adalah seperti melihat Allah.[f]

Yohanes memberitakan tentang Kristus

(Mat 3:1-12; Mrk 1:1-8; Luk 3:1-9, 15-17)

19 Para pemimpin Yahudi di Yerusalem mengutus beberapa imam dan orang Lewi kepada Yohanes untuk bertanya kepadanya, “Siapakah kamu?”

Yohanes mengatakan kebenaran kepada mereka. 20 Tanpa ragu-ragu, ia berkata secara terbuka dan apa adanya, “Aku bukanlah Mesias.”[g]

21 Mereka bertanya kepadanya, “Kalau begitu, siapakah kamu? Apakah kamu Elia?”[h]

Ia menjawab, “Bukan, aku bukan Elia.”

Mereka bertanya, “Apakah kamu Nabi[i] itu?”

Ia menjawab, “Bukan, aku bukan Nabi itu.”

22 Lalu mereka bertanya, “Siapakah kamu? Jelaskanlah dan berikanlah kami jawaban untuk disampaikan kepada mereka yang mengutus kami. Menurutmu, siapakah kamu ini?”

23 Yohanes menjawab mereka dengan menggunakan perkataan Nabi Yesaya:

“Akulah suara orang yang berseru-seru di padang belantara:
    ‘Luruskanlah jalan bagi Tuhan!’”(A)

24 Orang-orang Yahudi yang diutus itu berasal dari golongan Farisi. 25 Mereka berkata kepada Yohanes, “Kamu bilang bahwa kamu bukan Mesias, bukan Elia atau Nabi itu. Lalu mengapa kamu membaptiskan orang-orang?”

26 Yohanes menjawab, “Aku membaptis dengan air, tetapi dari antara bangsamu sendiri ada Seorang yang tidak kamu kenal. 27 Ialah yang akan datang setelah aku. Bahkan, untuk melepaskan tali sandal-Nya saja aku tidak layak.”

28 Semua ini terjadi di Betania, yang berada di seberang sungai Yordan. Di situlah, Yohanes membaptiskan banyak orang.

Yesus, Anak Domba Allah

29 Keesokan harinya, Yohanes melihat Yesus mendatanginya. Lalu ia berkata, “Lihat, Anak Domba Allah yang menghapus dosa dunia! 30 Dialah yang aku maksudkan ketika aku katakan, ‘Ada Seorang yang datang setelah aku, yang lebih besar dari aku, sebab Ia ada pada penciptaan, lama sebelum aku dilahirkan.’ 31 Aku tidak mengenal siapa Dia sebelumnya. Tetapi aku datang membaptiskan orang dengan air supaya orang Israel tahu bahwa Ia adalah Mesias.”

32 Kemudian Yohanes menyampaikan kesaksian ini kepada semua orang: “Aku melihat Roh turun dari langit seperti seekor burung merpati dan hinggap di atas Orang ini. 33 Aku tidak mengenal-Nya. Tetapi Ia yang mengutus aku untuk membaptiskan orang dengan air berkata kepadaku, ‘Kamu akan melihat Roh turun dan hinggap di atas Seseorang. Ialah yang akan membaptiskan dengan Roh Kudus.’ 34 Aku telah melihat-Nya. Maka inilah kesaksianku kepada orang-orang, ‘Ia adalah Anak Allah.’”

Pengikut Yesus yang pertama

35 Keesokan harinya, Yohanes berdiri lagi di sana bersama dengan dua pengikutnya. 36 Yohanes melihat Yesus mendekati dan berkata, “Lihatlah, Anak Domba Allah!”

37 Kedua pengikut itu mendengar perkataan Yohanes, lalu mereka mengikuti Yesus. 38 Yesus menoleh ke belakang dan melihat dua orang itu mengikuti-Nya. Ia bertanya, “Apa yang kamu inginkan?”

Mereka menjawab Yesus, “Guru, di manakah Engkau tinggal?”

39 Yesus menjawab, “Ikutlah Aku dan kamu akan melihatnya.” Jadi, kedua orang itu pergi bersama-Nya dan melihat di mana Yesus tinggal. Waktu itu kira-kira pukul empat sore, dan mereka tinggal di sana bersama Yesus pada hari itu.

40 Salah satu dari kedua pengikut itu bernama Andreas, saudara Simon Petrus. 41 Ia segera menemui Simon, saudaranya, dan berkata kepadanya, “Kami telah bertemu dengan Mesias.” (Mesias artinya “Kristus”.[j])

42 Kemudian Andreas membawa Simon kepada Yesus. Yesus memandang Simon dan berkata, “Hai Simon, anak Yohanes. Kamu akan disebut Kefas.”[k]

43 Keesokan harinya, Yesus memutuskan untuk pergi ke wilayah Galilea. Di sana, Ia bertemu dengan Filipus. Maka kata Yesus kepada Filipus, “Ikutlah Aku!” 44 Filipus berasal dari kota Betsaida, sama seperti Andreas dan Petrus. 45 Filipus bertemu Natanael dan berkata kepadanya, “Kami telah menemukan Dia yang dituliskan Musa dan para nabi. Ia adalah Yesus, anak Yusuf dari Nazaret.”

46 Tetapi Natanael berkata kepada Filipus, “Nazaret! Mungkinkah sesuatu yang baik datang dari Nazaret?”

Jawab Filipus kepadanya, “Mari lihatlah sendiri.”

47 Ketika Yesus lihat Natanael datang ke arah-Nya, Ia berkata, “Orang yang sedang menuju ke sini adalah orang Israel sejati. Ia adalah orang yang dapat kamu percaya.”[l]

48 Natanael bertanya, “Dari mana Engkau mengenal aku?”

Jawab Yesus kepadanya, “Aku melihatmu ketika kamu berada di bawah pohon ara sebelum Filipus menceritakan tentang Aku kepadamu.”

49 Jawab Natanael, “Guru, Engkau adalah Anak Allah. Engkau adalah Raja orang Israel.”

50 Lalu Yesus berkata kepadanya, “Kamu percaya ini hanya karena Aku berkata, Aku melihatmu di bawah pohon ara? Kamu akan melihat hal-hal yang lebih besar daripada itu!” 51 Lalu Ia berkata lagi, “Sesungguhnya, kamu akan melihat langit terbuka dan melihat ‘malaikat-malaikat Allah naik turun’[m] pada Anak Manusia.”

The Word Became Flesh

1 In the beginning was the Word,(A) and the Word was with God,(B) and the Word was God.(C) 2 He was with God in the beginning.(D) 3 Through him all things were made; without him nothing was made that has been made.(E) 4 In him was life,(F) and that life was the light(G) of all mankind. 5 The light shines in the darkness,(H) and the darkness has not overcome[a] it.(I)

6 There was a man sent from God whose name was John.(J) 7 He came as a witness to testify(K) concerning that light, so that through him all might believe.(L) 8 He himself was not the light; he came only as a witness to the light.

9 The true light(M) that gives light to everyone(N) was coming into the world. 10 He was in the world, and though the world was made through him,(O) the world did not recognize him. 11 He came to that which was his own, but his own did not receive him.(P) 12 Yet to all who did receive him, to those who believed(Q) in his name,(R) he gave the right to become children of God(S)— 13 children born not of natural descent, nor of human decision or a husband’s will, but born of God.(T)

John the Baptist Denies Being the Messiah

19 Now this was John’s(AG) testimony when the Jewish leaders[c](AH) in Jerusalem sent priests and Levites to ask him who he was. 20 He did not fail to confess, but confessed freely, “I am not the Messiah.”(AI)

21 They asked him, “Then who are you? Are you Elijah?”(AJ)

He said, “I am not.”

“Are you the Prophet?”(AK)

He answered, “No.”

22 Finally they said, “Who are you? Give us an answer to take back to those who sent us. What do you say about yourself?”

23 John replied in the words of Isaiah the prophet, “I am the voice of one calling in the wilderness,(AL) ‘Make straight the way for the Lord.’”[d](AM)

24 Now the Pharisees who had been sent 25 questioned him, “Why then do you baptize if you are not the Messiah, nor Elijah, nor the Prophet?”

26 “I baptize with[e] water,”(AN) John replied, “but among you stands one you do not know. 27 He is the one who comes after me,(AO) the straps of whose sandals I am not worthy to untie.”(AP)

28 This all happened at Bethany on the other side of the Jordan,(AQ) where John was baptizing.

John Testifies About Jesus

29 The next day John saw Jesus coming toward him and said, “Look, the Lamb of God,(AR) who takes away the sin of the world!(AS) 30 This is the one I meant when I said, ‘A man who comes after me has surpassed me because he was before me.’(AT) 31 I myself did not know him, but the reason I came baptizing with water was that he might be revealed to Israel.”

32 Then John gave this testimony: “I saw the Spirit come down from heaven as a dove and remain on him.(AU) 33 And I myself did not know him, but the one who sent me to baptize with water(AV) told me, ‘The man on whom you see the Spirit come down and remain is the one who will baptize with the Holy Spirit.’(AW) 34 I have seen and I testify that this is God’s Chosen One.”[f](AX)

John’s Disciples Follow Jesus(AY)

35 The next day John(AZ) was there again with two of his disciples. 36 When he saw Jesus passing by, he said, “Look, the Lamb of God!”(BA)

37 When the two disciples heard him say this, they followed Jesus. 38 Turning around, Jesus saw them following and asked, “What do you want?”

They said, “Rabbi”(BB) (which means “Teacher”), “where are you staying?”

39 “Come,” he replied, “and you will see.”

So they went and saw where he was staying, and they spent that day with him. It was about four in the afternoon.

40 Andrew, Simon Peter’s brother, was one of the two who heard what John had said and who had followed Jesus. 41 The first thing Andrew did was to find his brother Simon and tell him, “We have found the Messiah” (that is, the Christ).(BC) 42 And he brought him to Jesus.

Jesus looked at him and said, “You are Simon son of John. You will be called(BD) Cephas” (which, when translated, is Peter[g]).(BE)

Jesus Calls Philip and Nathanael

43 The next day Jesus decided to leave for Galilee. Finding Philip,(BF) he said to him, “Follow me.”(BG)

44 Philip, like Andrew and Peter, was from the town of Bethsaida.(BH) 45 Philip found Nathanael(BI) and told him, “We have found the one Moses wrote about in the Law,(BJ) and about whom the prophets also wrote(BK)—Jesus of Nazareth,(BL) the son of Joseph.”(BM)

46 “Nazareth! Can anything good come from there?”(BN) Nathanael asked.

“Come and see,” said Philip.

47 When Jesus saw Nathanael approaching, he said of him, “Here truly is an Israelite(BO) in whom there is no deceit.”(BP)

48 “How do you know me?” Nathanael asked.

Jesus answered, “I saw you while you were still under the fig tree before Philip called you.”

49 Then Nathanael declared, “Rabbi,(BQ) you are the Son of God;(BR) you are the king of Israel.”(BS)

50 Jesus said, “You believe[h] because I told you I saw you under the fig tree. You will see greater things than that.” 51 He then added, “Very truly I tell you,[i] you[j] will see ‘heaven open,(BT) and the angels of God ascending and descending(BU) on’[k] the Son of Man.”(BV)

The Testimony of John the Baptist

(AR)Are you Elijah?” He said, “I am not.” “Are you (AS)the Prophet?” And he answered, “No.” 22 So they said to him, “Who are you? We need to give an answer to those who sent us. What do you say about yourself?” 23 He said, “I am (AT)the voice of one crying out in the wilderness, ‘Make straight[h] the way of the Lord,’ as the prophet Isaiah said.”

24 (Now they had been sent from the Pharisees.) 25 They asked him, (AU)“Then why are you baptizing, if you are neither the Christ, nor Elijah, nor the Prophet?” 26 John answered them, (AV)“I baptize with water, but among you stands one you do not know, 27 even (AW)he who comes after me, the strap of whose sandal I am not worthy to untie.” 28 These things took place in Bethany across the Jordan, where John was baptizing.

Behold, the Lamb of God

29 The next day he saw Jesus coming toward him, and said, “Behold, (AX)the Lamb of God, who (AY)takes away the sin (AZ)of the world! 30 This is he of whom I said, (BA)‘After me comes a man who ranks before me, because he was before me.’ 31 I myself did not know him, but (BB)for this purpose I came baptizing with water, that he might be revealed to Israel.” 32 And John (BC)bore witness: (BD)“I saw the Spirit descend from heaven like a dove, and (BE)it remained on him. 33 I myself did not know him, but (BF)he who sent me to baptize (BG)with water said to me, ‘He on whom you see the Spirit descend and remain, (BH)this is he who baptizes (BI)with the Holy Spirit.’ 34 And I have seen and have borne witness that this is the Son[i] of God.”

Jesus Calls the First Disciples

35 The next day again John was standing with two of his disciples, 36 and he looked at Jesus as he walked by and said, “Behold, (BJ)the Lamb of God!” 37 The two disciples heard him say this, and they followed Jesus. 38 Jesus turned and saw them following and said to them, (BK)“What are you seeking?” And they said to him, (BL)“Rabbi” (which means Teacher), “where are you staying?” 39 He said to them, “Come and you will see.” So they came and saw where he was staying, and they stayed with him that day, for it was about the tenth hour.[j] 40 (BM)One of the two who heard John speak and followed Jesus[k] was Andrew, Simon Peter's brother. 41 He first found his own brother Simon and said to him, “We have found (BN)the Messiah” (which means Christ). 42 He brought him to Jesus. Jesus looked at him and said, “You are Simon the son of (BO)John. You shall be called (BP)Cephas” (which means (BQ)Peter[l]).

Jesus Calls Philip and Nathanael

43 (BR)The next day Jesus decided (BS)to go to Galilee. He found Philip and said to him, “Follow me.” 44 Now (BT)Philip was from Bethsaida, the city of Andrew and Peter. 45 Philip found (BU)Nathanael and said to him, “We have found him of whom (BV)Moses in the Law and also the prophets wrote, Jesus (BW)of Nazareth, (BX)the son of Joseph.” 46 Nathanael said to him, (BY)“Can anything good come out of Nazareth?” Philip said to him, “Come and see.” 47 Jesus saw Nathanael coming toward him and said of him, “Behold, (BZ)an Israelite indeed, (CA)in whom there is no deceit!” 48 Nathanael said to him, “How (CB)do you know me?” Jesus answered him, “Before Philip called you, when you were under the fig tree, I saw you.” 49 Nathanael answered him, (CC)“Rabbi, (CD)you are the Son of God! You are the (CE)King of Israel!” 50 Jesus answered him, “Because I said to you, ‘I saw you under the fig tree,’ do you believe? You will see greater things than these.” 51 And he said to him, “Truly, truly, I say to you,[m] you will see (CF)heaven opened, and (CG)the angels of God ascending and descending on (CH)the Son of Man.”
