46 The Davar Hashem which came to Yirmeyah HaNavi against the Goyim;

Against Mitzrayim, against the army of Pharaoh Necho Melech Mitzrayim, which was by the river Euphrates in Carkemish (Carchemish), which Nevuchadretzar Melech Bavel defeated in the fourth year of Y’hoyakim Ben Yoshiyah Melech Yehudah.

Order ye the mogen and tzinnah (large shield), and draw near to milchamah.

Harness the susim; and get up, ye parashim (horsemen), and stand forth with your helmets; polish the spears, and put on the armor.

What do I see? They are filled with terror and retreat! And their gibborim are beaten down, and are fled speedily, and look not back; for fear was all around, saith Hashem.

Let not the swift flee away, nor the gibbor escape; they shall stumble, and fall toward the north by the river Euphrates.

Who is this that riseth like the Nile, whose mayim surge like the rivers?

Mitzrayim riseth up like the Nile, and his mayim surge like the rivers; and he saith, I will go up, and will cover eretz (earth); I will destroy cities and the inhabitants thereof.

Come up, ye susim; and rage, ye chariots; and let the Gibborim come forth; Kush and Put, that handle the mogen; and the Ludim, that handle and bend the keshet.

10 For this is the Yom Adonoi Hashem Tzva’os, a day of vengeance, that He may avenge Him on His adversaries; and the cherev shall devour, and it shall be satiate and made drunk with their dahm; for Adonoi Hashem Tzva’os hath a zevach in eretz tzafon by the river Euphrates.

11 Go up into Gil‘ad, and take balm, O Betulat Bat Mitzrayim; in vain shalt thou use many refu’ot (healing remedies, medicines); for thou shalt not be healed.

12 The Goyim have heard of thy shame, and thy cry hath filled ha’aretz; for the gibbor hath stumbled against the gibbor, and they are fallen both together.

13 The Davar that Hashem spoke to Yirmeyah HaNavi, how Nevuchadretzar Melech Bavel would come and strike Eretz Mitzrayim.

14 Declare ye in Mitzrayim, and publish in Migdol, and publish in Noph and in Tahpanhes; say ye, Stand fast, prepare thee; for the cherev shall devour all around thee.

15 Why was it swept away? They stood not, because Hashem did drive them.

16 He made many to stumble, indeed, one fell upon another; and they said, Arise, and let us go back to ammenu (our own people), and to eretz moladteinu (land of our birth), from the oppressing cherev.

17 They did cry there, Pharaoh Melech Mitzrayim is but a noise; he hath passed the mo’ed (time appointed).

18 As I live, saith HaMelech, Hashem Tzva’os Shmo, Surely as Tavor is among the harim, and as Carmel by the yam, so shall he [Nebuchadnezzar] come.

19 O thou Bat dwelling in Mitzrayim, prepare thyself to go into Golus; for Noph shall be waste and desolate without an inhabitant.

20 Mitzrayim is like a very fair eglah, but a gadfly comes; it comes out of the tzafon.

21 Also her mercenaries are in the midst of her like young calves of the stall; for they also are turned back, and are fled away together; they did not stand, because the day of their calamity was come upon them, and the time of their pekuddat.

22 The noise thereof [the sound of Egypt fleeing] shall go like a nachash; for they [her enemies] shall march in force, and come against her with axes, as choppers of wood.

23 They shall cut down her forest, saith Hashem, though it cannot be searched out; because they are more in number than the arbeh (locust), innumerable.

24 The Bat Mitzrayim shall be ashamed; she shall be delivered into the yad of the Am Tzafon (People of the North).

25 Hashem Tzva’os Elohei Yisroel, saith; Hineni, I will punish Amon of No, and Pharaoh, and Mitzrayim, with their elohim, and their melachim; even Pharaoh, and all the botechim (ones trusting) in him;

26 And I will deliver them into the yad of those that seek their nefesh, and into the yad of Nevuchadretzar Melech Bavel, and into the yad of his avadim; and afterward it shall be inhabited, as in the yemei kedem (days of old), saith Hashem.

27 But fear not thou, O Avdi Ya’akov, and be not dismayed, O Yisroel; for, hineni, I will save thee from afar off, and thy zera from the land of their captivity; and Ya’akov shall return, and be in rest and securely at ease, and none shall make him afraid.

28 Fear thou not, O Ya’akov Avdi, saith Hashem; for I am with thee; for I will make a full end of kol HaGoyim where I have scattered thee; but I will not make a full end of thee, but correct thee with mishpat (justice); yet will I not leave thee wholly unpunished.

Defeat of Pharaoh Foretold

46 That which came as the word of the Lord to Jeremiah the prophet (A)concerning the nations.

To (B)Egypt, concerning the army of (C)Pharaoh Neco king of Egypt, which was by the river Euphrates at (D)Carchemish, which Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon defeated in the (E)fourth year of Jehoiakim the son of Josiah, king of Judah:

(F)Set up the [a]buckler and shield,
And advance to the battle!
Harness the horses,
And [b]mount the steeds,
Take your stand with helmets on!
(G)Polish the spears,
Put on the (H)coats of armor!
Why have I seen it?
They are terrified,
They are (I)retreating,
And their (J)warriors are defeated
And have taken refuge in flight,
Without facing back.
[c](K)Terror is on every side!”
Declares the Lord.
Let not the (L)swift man flee,
Nor the warrior escape.
In the north beside the river Euphrates
They have (M)stumbled and fallen.
Who is this that (N)rises like the Nile,
Like the rivers whose waters surge?
Egypt rises like the Nile,
And like the rivers whose waters surge;
And He has said, “I will (O)rise and cover that land;
I will (P)destroy the city and its inhabitants.”
Go up, you horses, and [d](Q)drive wildly, you chariots,
So that the warriors may [e]march forward:
[f]Cush and [g](R)Put, who handle the shield,
And the [h](S)Lydians, who handle and bend the bow.
10 For (T)that day belongs to the Lord [i]God of armies,
A day of (U)vengeance, so as to avenge Himself on His foes;
And the (V)sword will devour and be satisfied,
And [j]drink its fill of their blood;
For there will be a (W)slaughter for the Lord [k]God of armies,
In the land of the north at the river Euphrates.
11 Go (X)up to Gilead and obtain balm,
(Y)Virgin daughter of Egypt!
You have used many [l]remedies in vain;
There is (Z)no healing for you.
12 The nations have heard of your (AA)shame,
And the earth is full of your (AB)cry of distress;
For one (AC)warrior has stumbled over [m]another,
And both of them have fallen down together.

13 This is the [n]message which the Lord spoke to Jeremiah the prophet about the (AD)coming of Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon to (AE)strike the land of Egypt:

14 “Declare in Egypt and proclaim in (AF)Migdol,
Proclaim also in Memphis and (AG)Tahpanhes;
Say, ‘Take your stand and get yourself ready,
For the (AH)sword has devoured those around you.’
15 Why have your (AI)powerful ones been cut down?
They do not stand because the Lord has (AJ)thrust them away.
16 They have repeatedly (AK)stumbled;
Indeed, they have fallen, one against another.
Then they said, ‘Get up, and (AL)let’s go back
To our own people and our native land,
Away from the [o](AM)sword of the oppressor!’
17 [p]They shouted there, ‘Pharaoh king of Egypt is nothing but (AN)a big noise;
He has let the appointed time pass by!’
18 As I live,” declares the (AO)King,
Whose name is the Lord of armies,
“One certainly shall come who is like (AP)Tabor among the mountains,
Or like (AQ)Carmel by the sea.
19 Make your baggage ready for (AR)exile,
(AS)Daughter living in Egypt,
For (AT)Memphis will become a desolation;
It will be destroyed and [q]deprived of inhabitants.
20 Egypt is a pretty (AU)heifer,
But a [r]horsefly is coming (AV)from the north—it is coming!
21 Also her (AW)mercenaries in her midst
Are like fattened (AX)calves,
For they too have turned away and have fled together;
They did not stand their ground.
For the day of their disaster has come upon them,
The time of their (AY)punishment.
22 Its sound moves along like a serpent;
For they move on [s]like an army
And come to her as woodcutters with axes.
23 They have cut down her (AZ)forest,” declares the Lord;
“Certainly it will no longer be found,
Even though [t]they are more numerous than (BA)locusts
And are without number.
24 The daughter of Egypt has been put to shame,
Turned over to the [u]power of the (BB)people of the north.”

25 The Lord of armies, the God of Israel says: “Behold, I am going to punish Amon of (BC)Thebes, and (BD)Pharaoh, and Egypt along with her (BE)gods and her kings, indeed, Pharaoh and those who (BF)trust in him. 26 I shall hand them over to those who are (BG)seeking their lives, that is, to Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon and to his [v]officers. (BH)Afterward, however, it will be inhabited as in the days of old,” declares the Lord.

27 “But as for you, Jacob My servant, (BI)do not fear,
Nor be dismayed, Israel!
For, see, I am going to (BJ)save you from far away,
And your descendants from the land of their captivity;
And Jacob will return and be (BK)undisturbed
And secure, with no one making him afraid.
28 Jacob My servant, do not fear,” declares the Lord,
“For (BL)I am with you.
For I will make a complete destruction of all the nations
Where I have driven you,
Yet I will (BM)not make a complete destruction of you;
But I will (BN)correct you properly
And by no means leave you unpunished.”
