Heb ontzag voor de Heer – dat zal je beschermen
3 Mijn zoon, vergeet niet wat ik je leer.
Bewaar in je hart wat ik je zeg.
2 Dan zul je heel veel langer leven
en zul je veel meer vrede hebben.
3 Wees altijd trouw en liefdevol.
Zorg dat je dat nooit loslaat, maar bewaar het in je hart.
4 Zorg ervoor dat God en mensen blij met je zijn.
5 Vertrouw met je hele hart op de Heer,
en vertrouw niet op je eigen wijsheid.
6 Overleg al je plannen met Hem.
Dan zal Hij je leven leiden.
7 Verbeeld je niet dat je heel erg wijs bent.
Heb diep ontzag voor de Heer en blijf ver bij het kwaad vandaan.
8 Dat zal goed zijn voor je ziel en je lichaam.
Het zal goed met je gaan.
9 Geef de Heer van wat je bezit.
Geef Hem het eerste deel van je oogst.[a]
10 Dan zullen je schuren altijd vol zijn met graan,
en je wijnpersen zullen overstromen van wijn.
11 Gehoorzaam de Heer als Hij je opvoedt.
Verzet je niet als Hij je bestraft.
12 Want de Heer bestraft de mensen van wie Hij houdt.
Ja, Hij bestraft je zoals een vader zijn zoon bestraft,
omdat hij van hem houdt.
Niets is méér waard dan wijsheid
13 Het is heerlijk als je wijsheid vindt.
Het is heerlijk als je verstandig wordt.
14 Want dat levert méér op dan zilver.
Wat je ermee krijgt, is beter dan goud.
15 Wijsheid is meer waard dan edelstenen.
Je kan je niets beters wensen dan wijsheid.
16 Door wijsheid krijg je een lang leven,
en ook rijkdom en eer.
17 Door wijsheid zal het goed met je gaan
en zul je vrede hebben.
18 Wijsheid geeft leven aan de mensen die wijs willen worden.
Het zal goed met je gaan als je wijs bent.
19 Door wijsheid heeft de Heer de aarde gemaakt.
Door verstand maakte Hij de hemel.
20 Door zijn kennis heeft Hij land en water van elkaar gescheiden,
en druppelen de wolken van de dauw.
21 Mijn zoon, verlies de wijsheid nooit uit het oog.
Wees altijd verstandig en denk goed na.
22 Want wijsheid is een bron van leven.
Je wijsheid zal een sieraad voor je zijn.
23 Door wijsheid zul je veilig je weg door het leven gaan.
Je zal geen domme dingen doen.
24 Als je in bed ligt, hoef je nergens bang voor te zijn.
Je zal rustig kunnen slapen.
25 Je hoeft niet bang te zijn voor plotselinge rampen.
Die overkomen alleen de mensen die zich niets van God aantrekken.
26 Maar jij mag op de Heer vertrouwen.
Hij zal je beschermen, zodat niemand je kwaad zal kunnen doen.
27 Geef iedereen waar hij recht op heeft,
voor zo ver je dat kan.
28 Zeg niet tegen iemand die jou om iets vraagt:
"Ga weg en kom morgen maar terug," als je het nu al kan geven.
29 Bedenk geen plannen om een ander kwaad te doen,
want die ander denkt dat je bent te vertrouwen.
30 Maak geen ruzie over helemaal niets,
als de ander je niets heeft gedaan.
31 Wees niet jaloers op iemand die gewelddadig is
en word vooral niet als hij.
32 Want de Heer walgt van zulke mensen.
Maar met eerlijke mensen wil Hij omgaan.
33 De vervloeking van de Heer rust op het huis van slechte mensen.[b]
Maar Hij zegent het huis van mensen die leven zoals Hij het wil.
34 Hij wil niets te maken hebben met mensen die Hem belachelijk maken.
Maar Hij is goed voor mensen die Hem willen gehoorzamen.
35 Wijze mensen zullen worden geëerd,
maar dwaze mensen zullen voor schut komen te staan. (lees verder)

Guidance for the Young
3 My son, do not forget my law,
(A)But let your heart keep my commands;
2 For length of days and long life
And (B)peace they will add to you.
3 Let not mercy and truth forsake you;
(C)Bind them around your neck,
(D)Write them on the tablet of your heart,
4 (E)And so find favor and [a]high esteem
In the sight of God and man.
5 (F)Trust in the Lord with all your heart,
(G)And lean not on your own understanding;
6 (H)In all your ways acknowledge Him,
And He shall [b]direct your paths.
7 Do not be wise in your own (I)eyes;
Fear the Lord and depart from evil.
8 It will be health to your [c]flesh,
And (J)strength[d] to your bones.
9 (K)Honor the Lord with your possessions,
And with the firstfruits of all your increase;
10 (L)So your barns will be filled with plenty,
And your vats will overflow with new wine.
11 (M)My son, do not despise the chastening of the Lord,
Nor detest His correction;
12 For whom the Lord loves He corrects,
(N)Just as a father the son in whom he delights.
13 (O)Happy is the man who finds wisdom,
And the man who gains understanding;
14 (P)For her proceeds are better than the profits of silver,
And her gain than fine gold.
15 She is more precious than rubies,
And (Q)all the things you may desire cannot compare with her.
16 (R)Length of days is in her right hand,
In her left hand riches and honor.
17 (S)Her ways are ways of pleasantness,
And all her paths are peace.
18 She is (T)a tree of life to those who take hold of her,
And happy are all who [e]retain her.
19 (U)The Lord by wisdom founded the earth;
By understanding He established the heavens;
20 By His knowledge the depths were (V)broken up,
And clouds drop down the dew.
21 My son, let them not depart from your eyes—
Keep sound wisdom and discretion;
22 So they will be life to your soul
And grace to your neck.
23 (W)Then you will walk safely in your way,
And your foot will not stumble.
24 When you lie down, you will not be afraid;
Yes, you will lie down and your sleep will be sweet.
25 (X)Do not be afraid of sudden terror,
Nor of trouble from the wicked when it comes;
26 For the Lord will be your confidence,
And will keep your foot from being caught.
27 (Y)Do not withhold good from [f]those to whom it is due,
When it is in the power of your hand to do so.
28 (Z)Do not say to your neighbor,
“Go, and come back,
And tomorrow I will give it,”
When you have it with you.
29 Do not devise evil against your neighbor,
For he dwells by you for safety’s sake.
30 (AA)Do not strive with a man without cause,
If he has done you no harm.
31 (AB)Do not envy the oppressor,
And choose none of his ways;
32 For the perverse person is an abomination to the Lord,
(AC)But His secret counsel is with the upright.
33 (AD)The curse of the Lord is on the house of the wicked,
But (AE)He blesses the home of the just.
34 (AF)Surely He scorns the scornful,
But gives grace to the humble.
35 The wise shall inherit glory,
But shame shall be the legacy of fools.

Trust in the Lord with All Your Heart
3 (A)My son, do not forget my teaching,
(B)but let your heart keep my commandments,
2 for (C)length of days and years of life
and (D)peace they will add to you.
3 Let not (E)steadfast love and (F)faithfulness forsake you;
(G)bind them around your neck;
(H)write them on the tablet of your heart.
4 So you will (I)find favor and (J)good success[a]
in the sight of God and man.
5 (K)Trust in the Lord with all your heart,
and (L)do not lean on your own understanding.
6 In all your ways (M)acknowledge him,
and he (N)will make straight your paths.
7 (O)Be not wise in your own eyes;
(P)fear the Lord, and turn away from evil.
8 It will be (Q)healing to your flesh[b]
and (R)refreshment[c] to your bones.
9 Honor the Lord with your wealth

or be weary of his reproof,
12 for the Lord reproves him whom he loves,

Blessed Is the One Who Finds Wisdom
13 (W)Blessed is the one who finds wisdom,
and the one who gets understanding,
14 (X)for the gain from her is better than gain from silver
and her profit better than (Y)gold.
15 She is more precious than (Z)jewels,
and (AA)nothing you desire can compare with her.
16 (AB)Long life is in her right hand;
in her left hand are (AC)riches and honor.
17 Her (AD)ways are ways of pleasantness,
and all her paths are peace.
18 She is (AE)a tree of life to those who (AF)lay hold of her;
those who hold her fast are called blessed.
19 (AG)The Lord by wisdom founded the earth;
by understanding (AH)he established the heavens;
20 by his knowledge (AI)the deeps broke open,
and (AJ)the clouds drop down the dew.
21 My son, (AK)do not lose sight of these—
keep sound wisdom and discretion,

when he has done you no harm.

and do not choose any of his ways,
32 for (BB)the devious person is an abomination to the Lord,
but the upright are (BC)in his confidence.
33 (BD)The Lord's curse is on the house of the wicked,
but he (BE)blesses the dwelling of the righteous.
34 Toward the (BF)scorners he (BG)is scornful,
(BH)but to the humble he gives favor.[f]
35 The wise will inherit honor,
