Booz se casa con Rut
4 Booz se dirigió a la entrada de la ciudad, y allí se sentó. En ese momento vio pasar al pariente del cual le había hablado a Rut, y le dijo:
«Hermano, ven y siéntate aquí conmigo.»
El pariente fue y se sentó. 2 Entonces Booz llamó a diez de los ancianos de la ciudad, y les dijo:
«Siéntense también con nosotros.»
En cuanto ellos se sentaron, 3 Booz le dijo a su pariente:
«Noemí ha vuelto de Moab, y vende una parte de las tierras que fueron de nuestro pariente Elimelec. 4 Creo conveniente que lo sepas, y te sugiero comprar sus tierras, teniendo como testigos a los aquí presentes, ancianos de mi pueblo. Si quieres comprar, compra; si no quieres comprar, dímelo, pues tengo que saberlo. Y es que nadie más puede comprar sino sólo tú, y después de ti, yo.»
Y el pariente respondió:
«Está bien. Compro el terreno.»
5 Entonces añadió Booz:
«Al comprar las tierras de Noemí, debes también tomar por mujer a Rut, la moabita que fue mujer del difunto, para que la posesión siga a nombre de su esposo muerto.»
6 Entonces el pariente respondió:
«Si es así, no puedo comprar las tierras, porque no quiero poner en riesgo mi heredad. Compra tú. Te cedo mis derechos.»
7 Desde hacía mucho tiempo, había una costumbre en Israel, que en una compra por rescate, una de las partes se quitaba su sandalia y se la daba al otro. Con este acto se confirmaba el trato ante todo Israel. 8 Así que el pariente se quitó el zapato(A) y le dijo a Booz:
«Toma tú posesión de las tierras.»
9 Entonces Booz les dijo a los ancianos y a todo el pueblo:
«Ustedes son testigos de que hoy le compro a Noemí todo lo que fue de su esposo Elimelec, y de sus hijos Quelión y Majlón. 10 Además, tomo por esposa a la moabita Rut, que fue mujer de Majlón, para que la posesión siga a nombre de su esposo muerto, y su memoria no se borre de entre sus hermanos ni de su ciudad. Ustedes son testigos hoy de este acuerdo.»
11 El pueblo y los ancianos que estaban a la entrada de la ciudad dijeron:
«Somos testigos. Que el Señor permita que la mujer que llega a tu casa sea como Raquel y Lea, las cuales levantaron como pueblo a los israelitas.(B) Que seas tú un hombre ilustre y distinguido en Efrata y en Belén. 12 Que el Señor te conceda tener con Rut muchos hijos, como se los concedió a Fares, el hijo de Tamar y Judá.»(C)
13 Así fue como Booz tomó a Rut por esposa, y se allegó a ella, y el Señor le concedió quedar embarazada y dar a luz un hijo. 14 Las mujeres le decían a Noemí:
«¡Alabado sea el Señor, que te concedió tener un nieto que te rescatara! ¡Su nombre será celebrado entre los israelitas! 15 Ese niño te infundirá nuevos ánimos, y te brindará apoyo en tu vejez. Tu nuera, que te ama y dio a luz ese niño, es de más valor para ti que siete hijos.»
16 Noemí tomó al niño y lo puso en su regazo, y se encargó de criarlo. 17 Y las vecinas decían:
«Noemí ha tenido un hijo»
Y lo llamaron Obed. Éste fue el padre de Yesé, que fue padre de David.
18 Éstas son las generaciones de Fares:(D) Fares fue padre de Jesrón; 19 Jesrón fue padre de Ram, y Ram fue padre de Aminadab. 20 Aminadab fue padre de Nasón, y Nasón fue padre de Salmón. 21 Salmón fue padre de Booz, y Booz fue padre de Obed. 22 Obed fue padre de Yesé, y Yesé fue padre de David.

Boaz Redeems Ruth
4 Now Boaz had gone up to (A)the gate and sat down there. And behold, (B)the redeemer, of whom Boaz had spoken, came by. So Boaz said, “Turn aside, friend; sit down here.” And he turned aside and sat down. 2 And he took ten men (C)of the elders of the city and said, “Sit down here.” So they sat down. 3 Then he said to the redeemer, “Naomi, who has come back from the country of Moab, is selling the parcel of land that belonged to our relative Elimelech. 4 So I thought I would tell you of it and say, (D)‘Buy it in the presence of those sitting here and in the presence of the elders of my people.’ If you will redeem it, redeem it. But if you[a] will not, tell me, that I may know, for there is no one besides you to redeem it, and I come after you.” And he said, “I will redeem it.” 5 Then Boaz said, “The day you buy the field from the hand of Naomi, you also acquire Ruth[b] the Moabite, the widow of the dead, in order (E)to perpetuate the name of the dead in his inheritance.” 6 (F)Then the redeemer said, “I cannot redeem it for myself, lest I impair my own inheritance. Take my right of redemption yourself, for I cannot redeem it.”
7 (G)Now this was the custom in former times in Israel concerning redeeming and exchanging: to confirm a transaction, the one drew off his sandal and gave it to the other, and this was the manner of attesting in Israel. 8 So when the redeemer said to Boaz, “Buy it for yourself,” he drew off his sandal. 9 Then Boaz said to the elders and all the people, “You are witnesses this day that I have bought from the hand of Naomi all that belonged to Elimelech and all that belonged to (H)Chilion and to Mahlon. 10 Also Ruth the Moabite, the widow of Mahlon, I have bought to be my wife, (I)to perpetuate the name of the dead in his inheritance, that the name of the dead may not be cut off from among his brothers and from the gate of his native place. You are witnesses this day.” 11 Then all the people who were (J)at the gate and the elders said, “We are witnesses. May the Lord make the woman, who is coming into your house, like Rachel and Leah, (K)who together (L)built up the house of Israel. May you act worthily in (M)Ephrathah and (N)be renowned in Bethlehem, 12 and may your house be like the house of Perez, (O)whom Tamar bore to Judah, because (P)of the offspring that the Lord will give you by this young woman.”

13 So Boaz took Ruth, and she became his wife. And he went in to her, (Q)and the Lord gave her conception, and she bore a son. 14 (R)Then the women said to Naomi, “Blessed be the Lord, who has not left you this day without (S)a redeemer, and may his name (T)be renowned in Israel! 15 He shall be to you a restorer of life and a nourisher of your old age, for your daughter-in-law who loves you, (U)who is more to you than seven sons, has given birth to him.” 16 Then Naomi took the child and laid him on her lap and became his nurse. 17 (V)And the women of the neighborhood gave him a name, saying, “A son has been born to Naomi.” They named him Obed. He was the father of Jesse, the father of David.

18 Now these are the generations of Perez: (W)Perez fathered Hezron, 19 Hezron fathered Ram, Ram fathered Amminadab, 20 (X)Amminadab fathered Nahshon, Nahshon fathered Salmon, 21 Salmon fathered Boaz, Boaz fathered Obed, 22 Obed fathered Jesse, and Jesse fathered David.
