7 ¶ ¿O ignoráis, hermanos (hablo con los que saben la ley), que la ley solamente se enseñorea del hombre entre tanto que vive?
2 Porque la mujer que está sujeta a marido, mientras el marido vive está obligada a la ley; mas muerto el marido, ella es libre de la ley del marido.
3 Así que, viviendo el marido, se llamará adúltera si fuere de otro varón; mas si su marido muriere, es libre de la ley (del marido); de tal manera que no será adúltera si fuere de otro marido.
4 Así también vosotros, hermanos míos, sois muertos a la ley en el cuerpo del Cristo, para que seáis de otro, del que resucitó de los muertos, para que fructifiquemos a Dios.
5 Porque mientras vivíamos en la carne, los afectos de los pecados que eran por la ley, obraban en nuestros miembros fructificando a muerte.
6 Pero ahora somos libres de la ley de la muerte en la cual estábamos detenidos, para que sirvamos en novedad de Espíritu, y no en vejez de letra.
7 ¶ ¿Qué pues diremos? ¿La ley es pecado? En ninguna manera. Pero yo no conocí el pecado sino por la ley; porque (tampoco) conocería la concupiscencia, si la ley no dijera: No codiciarás.
8 Entonces el pecado, cuando hubo ocasión, obró en mí por el mandamiento toda concupiscencia. Porque sin la ley el pecado estaba como adormecido.
9 Así que, yo sin la ley vivía por algún tiempo; mas venido el mandamiento, el pecado revivió, y yo morí;
10 y hallé que el mismo mandamiento, que era para vida, para mí era mortal;
11 porque el pecado, habida ocasión, me engañó por el mandamiento, y por él me mató.
12 De manera que la ley a la verdad es santa, y el mandamiento santo, y justo, y bueno.
13 ¿Luego lo que es bueno, a mí me es hecho muerte? No; sino el pecado, que para mostrarse pecado por lo bueno, me obró la muerte, haciéndose pecado sobremanera pecaminoso por el mandamiento.
14 ¶ Porque ya sabemos que la ley es espiritual; mas yo soy carnal, vendido a sujeción del pecado.
15 Porque lo que cometo, no lo entiendo; y ni el (bien) que quiero, hago; antes lo que aborrezco, aquello hago.
16 Y si lo que no quiero, esto hago, apruebo que la ley es buena.
17 De manera que ya yo no obro aquello, sino el pecado que mora en mí.
18 Y yo sé que en mí (es a saber, en mi carne) no mora el bien, porque tengo el querer, mas efectuar el bien no lo alcanzo.
19 Porque no hago el bien que quiero; pero el mal que no quiero, éste hago.
20 Y si hago lo que no quiero, ya no obro yo, sino el pecado que mora en mí.
21 Así que, queriendo yo hacer el bien, hallo esta ley: Que el mal me es propio.
22 Porque con el hombre interior, me deleito con la ley de Dios;
23 mas veo otra ley en mis miembros, que se rebela contra la ley de mi mente, y que me lleva cautivo a la ley del pecado que está en mis miembros.
24 ¡Miserable hombre de mí! ¿Quién me librará del cuerpo de esta muerte?
25 La gracia de Dios, por Jesús, el Cristo, Señor nuestro. Así que, yo mismo con la mente sirvo a la ley de Dios, pero con la carne a la ley del pecado.

Released From the Law, Bound to Christ
7 Do you not know, brothers and sisters(A)—for I am speaking to those who know the law—that the law has authority over someone only as long as that person lives? 2 For example, by law a married woman is bound to her husband as long as he is alive, but if her husband dies, she is released from the law that binds her to him.(B) 3 So then, if she has sexual relations with another man while her husband is still alive, she is called an adulteress.(C) But if her husband dies, she is released from that law and is not an adulteress if she marries another man.
4 So, my brothers and sisters, you also died to the law(D) through the body of Christ,(E) that you might belong to another,(F) to him who was raised from the dead, in order that we might bear fruit for God. 5 For when we were in the realm of the flesh,[a](G) the sinful passions aroused by the law(H) were at work in us,(I) so that we bore fruit for death.(J) 6 But now, by dying to what once bound us, we have been released from the law(K) so that we serve in the new way of the Spirit, and not in the old way of the written code.(L)
The Law and Sin
7 What shall we say, then?(M) Is the law sinful? Certainly not!(N) Nevertheless, I would not have known what sin was had it not been for the law.(O) For I would not have known what coveting really was if the law had not said, “You shall not covet.”[b](P) 8 But sin, seizing the opportunity afforded by the commandment,(Q) produced in me every kind of coveting. For apart from the law, sin was dead.(R) 9 Once I was alive apart from the law; but when the commandment came, sin sprang to life and I died. 10 I found that the very commandment that was intended to bring life(S) actually brought death. 11 For sin, seizing the opportunity afforded by the commandment,(T) deceived me,(U) and through the commandment put me to death. 12 So then, the law is holy, and the commandment is holy, righteous and good.(V)
13 Did that which is good, then, become death to me? By no means! Nevertheless, in order that sin might be recognized as sin, it used what is good(W) to bring about my death,(X) so that through the commandment sin might become utterly sinful.
14 We know that the law is spiritual; but I am unspiritual,(Y) sold(Z) as a slave to sin.(AA) 15 I do not understand what I do. For what I want to do I do not do, but what I hate I do.(AB) 16 And if I do what I do not want to do, I agree that the law is good.(AC) 17 As it is, it is no longer I myself who do it, but it is sin living in me.(AD) 18 For I know that good itself does not dwell in me, that is, in my sinful nature.[c](AE) For I have the desire to do what is good, but I cannot carry it out. 19 For I do not do the good I want to do, but the evil I do not want to do—this I keep on doing.(AF) 20 Now if I do what I do not want to do, it is no longer I who do it, but it is sin living in me that does it.(AG)
21 So I find this law at work:(AH) Although I want to do good, evil is right there with me. 22 For in my inner being(AI) I delight in God’s law;(AJ) 23 but I see another law at work in me, waging war(AK) against the law of my mind and making me a prisoner of the law of sin(AL) at work within me. 24 What a wretched man I am! Who will rescue me from this body that is subject to death?(AM) 25 Thanks be to God, who delivers me through Jesus Christ our Lord!(AN)
So then, I myself in my mind am a slave to God’s law,(AO) but in my sinful nature[d] a slave to the law of sin.(AP)

Released from the Law
7 Or do you not know, brothers[a]—for I am speaking to those who know the law—that the law is binding on a person only as long as he lives? 2 For (A)a married woman is bound by law to her husband while he lives, but if her husband dies she is released from the law of marriage.[b] 3 Accordingly, (B)she will be called an adulteress if she lives with another man while her husband is alive. 4 Likewise, my brothers, (C)you also have died (D)to the law (E)through the body of Christ, so that you may belong to another, to him who has been raised from the dead, (F)in order that we may bear fruit for God. 5 For while we were living in the flesh, our sinful passions, aroused by the law, were at work (G)in our members (H)to bear fruit for death. 6 But now we are released from the law, having died to that which held us captive, so that we serve in the (I)new way of (J)the Spirit and not in the old way of the written code.[c]
The Law and Sin
7 What then shall we say? That the law is sin? By no means! Yet if it had not been for the law, (K)I would not have known sin. For I would not have known what it is to covet if (L)the law had not said, “You shall not covet.” 8 But sin, (M)seizing an opportunity through the commandment, produced in me all kinds of covetousness. (N)For apart from the law, sin lies dead. 9 I was once alive apart from the law, but when the commandment came, sin came alive and I died. 10 The very commandment (O)that promised life proved to be death to me. 11 For sin, (P)seizing an opportunity through the commandment, (Q)deceived me and through it killed me. 12 So (R)the law is holy, and the commandment is holy and righteous and good.
13 Did that which is good, then, bring death to me? By no means! It was sin, producing death in me through what is good, in order that sin might be shown to be sin, and through the commandment might become sinful beyond measure. 14 For we know that the law is spiritual, but I am of the flesh, (S)sold under sin. 15 For I do not understand my own actions. For (T)I do not do what I want, but I do the very thing I hate. 16 Now if I do what I do not want, I agree with (U)the law, that it is good. 17 So now (V)it is no longer I who do it, but sin that dwells within me. 18 For I know that nothing good dwells (W)in me, that is, in my flesh. For I have the desire to do what is right, but not the ability to carry it out. 19 (X)For I do not do the good I want, but the evil I do not want is what I keep on doing. 20 Now if I do what I do not want, (Y)it is no longer I who do it, but sin that dwells within me.
21 So I find it to be a law that when I want to do right, evil lies close at hand. 22 For (Z)I delight in the law of God, (AA)in my inner being, 23 but I see in my members (AB)another law waging war against the law of my mind and making me captive to the law of sin that dwells in my members. 24 Wretched man that I am! Who will deliver me from (AC)this body of death? 25 Thanks be to God through Jesus Christ our Lord! So then, I myself serve the law of God with my mind, but with my flesh I serve the law of sin.
