13 Todos deben someterse a las personas que ejercen la autoridad. Porque no hay autoridad que no venga de Dios, y las que existen, fueron puestas por él. 2 Así que quien se opone a la autoridad, va en contra de lo que Dios ha ordenado. Y los que se oponen serán castigados; 3 porque los gobernantes no están para causar miedo a los que hacen lo bueno, sino a los que hacen lo malo. ¿Quieres vivir sin miedo a la autoridad? Pues pórtate bien, y la autoridad te aprobará, 4 porque está al servicio de Dios para tu bien. Pero si te portas mal, entonces sí debes tener miedo; porque no en vano la autoridad lleva la espada, ya que está al servicio de Dios para dar su merecido al que hace lo malo. 5 Por lo tanto, es preciso someterse a las autoridades, no sólo para evitar el castigo, sino como un deber de conciencia. 6 También por esta razón ustedes pagan impuestos; porque las autoridades están al servicio de Dios, y a eso se dedican.
7 Denle a cada uno lo que le corresponde. Al que deban pagar contribuciones, páguenle las contribuciones; al que deban pagar impuestos, páguenle los impuestos; al que deban respeto, respétenlo; al que deban estimación, estímenlo.
8 No tengan deudas con nadie, aparte de la deuda de amor que tienen unos con otros; pues el que ama a su prójimo ya ha cumplido todo lo que la ley ordena. 9 Los mandamientos dicen: «No cometas adulterio, no mates, no robes, no codicies»; pero éstos y los demás mandamientos quedan comprendidos en estas palabras: «Ama a tu prójimo como a ti mismo.» 10 El que tiene amor no hace mal al prójimo; así que en el amor se cumple perfectamente la ley.
11 En todo esto tengan en cuenta el tiempo en que vivimos, y sepan que ya es hora de despertarnos del sueño. Porque nuestra salvación está más cerca ahora que al principio, cuando creímos en el mensaje. 12 La noche está muy avanzada, y se acerca el día; por eso dejemos de hacer las cosas propias de la oscuridad y revistámonos de luz, como un soldado se reviste de su armadura. 13 Actuemos con decencia, como en pleno día. No andemos en banquetes y borracheras, ni en inmoralidades y vicios, ni en discordias y envidias. 14 Al contrario, revístanse ustedes del Señor Jesucristo, y no busquen satisfacer los malos deseos de la naturaleza humana.

Submission to Governing Authorities
13 Let everyone be subject to the governing authorities,(A) for there is no authority except that which God has established.(B) The authorities that exist have been established by God. 2 Consequently, whoever rebels against the authority is rebelling against what God has instituted,(C) and those who do so will bring judgment on themselves. 3 For rulers hold no terror for those who do right, but for those who do wrong. Do you want to be free from fear of the one in authority? Then do what is right and you will be commended.(D) 4 For the one in authority is God’s servant for your good. But if you do wrong, be afraid, for rulers do not bear the sword for no reason. They are God’s servants, agents of wrath to bring punishment on the wrongdoer.(E) 5 Therefore, it is necessary to submit to the authorities, not only because of possible punishment but also as a matter of conscience.(F)
6 This is also why you pay taxes,(G) for the authorities are God’s servants, who give their full time to governing. 7 Give to everyone what you owe them: If you owe taxes, pay taxes;(H) if revenue, then revenue; if respect, then respect; if honor, then honor.
Love Fulfills the Law
8 Let no debt remain outstanding, except the continuing debt to love one another, for whoever loves others has fulfilled the law.(I) 9 The commandments, “You shall not commit adultery,” “You shall not murder,” “You shall not steal,” “You shall not covet,”[a](J) and whatever other command there may be, are summed up(K) in this one command: “Love your neighbor as yourself.”[b](L) 10 Love does no harm to a neighbor. Therefore love is the fulfillment of the law.(M)
The Day Is Near
11 And do this, understanding the present time: The hour has already come(N) for you to wake up from your slumber,(O) because our salvation is nearer now than when we first believed. 12 The night is nearly over; the day is almost here.(P) So let us put aside the deeds of darkness(Q) and put on the armor(R) of light. 13 Let us behave decently, as in the daytime, not in carousing and drunkenness,(S) not in sexual immorality and debauchery, not in dissension and jealousy.(T) 14 Rather, clothe yourselves with the Lord Jesus Christ,(U) and do not think about how to gratify the desires of the flesh.[c](V)
