De geboorte van Simson
13 De Israëlieten werden weer ongehoorzaam aan de Heer. Ze leefden niet meer zoals Hij het wil. Toen gaf de Heer hen 40 jaar lang in de macht van de Filistijnen. 2 In die tijd woonde er een man in Zora, die Manoa heette. Hij was uit de stam van Dan. Zijn vrouw kon geen kinderen krijgen. 3 Op een dag kwam de Engel van de Heer naar haar toe. Hij zei: "Tot nu toe heb je geen kinderen gekregen. Maar nu zul je in verwachting raken en een zoon krijgen. 4 Drink geen wijn of andere drank met alcohol[a] en eet niets wat onrein is.[b] 5 Want je zal in verwachting raken en een zoon krijgen die voor de Heer zal zijn.[c] Zijn haar mag nooit geknipt worden. Al vanaf het moment dat hij in jou ontstaat, zal de jongen voor God zijn. Hij zal een begin maken met de bevrijding van Israël uit de macht van de Filistijnen."
6 De vrouw ging aan haar man vertellen: "Er kwam een man van God naar mij toe. Hij zag er uit als een engel. Heel indrukwekkend. Ik heb hem niet gevraagd waar hij vandaan kwam en hij heeft niet gezegd hoe hij heette. 7 Maar hij zei tegen mij: 'Je zal in verwachting raken en een zoon krijgen. Drink geen wijn of andere drank met alcohol en eet niets wat onrein is. Want vanaf het moment dat hij in je ontstaat, tot aan zijn dood, zal hij voor God zijn.' "
8 Toen bad Manoa vurig tot de Heer: "Heer, laat de man van God die U gestuurd had, alstublieft nóg een keer komen. Dan kan hij ons vertellen wat we moeten doen als de jongen is geboren." 9 God deed wat Manoa gevraagd had. De Engel van God kwam opnieuw naar de vrouw toe. Ze was in het veld, maar haar man was ergens anders. 10 De vrouw rende naar haar man om het hem te vertellen. Ze zei tegen hem: "Die man die laatst naar mij toe kwam is er weer!" 11 Manoa ging met zijn vrouw mee en toen ze bij de man kwamen, zei hij tegen hem: "Bent u de man die met mijn vrouw heeft gesproken?" Hij zei: "Ja." 12 Toen zei Manoa: "Als gebeurt wat u heeft gezegd, wat moet de jongen dan doen en hoe moet hij leven?" 13 De Engel van de Heer antwoordde: "De vrouw moet letten op de dingen die ik haar heb genoemd. 14 Ze mag niets eten of drinken wat van de wijnstruik komt. En ze mag niets eten wat onrein is. Ze moet precies doen wat ik haar gezegd heb." 15 Manoa zei tegen de Engel van de Heer: "Wilt u alstublieft nog even hier blijven? Dan maken we een geitje voor u klaar." 16 Manoa wist immers niet dat het de Engel van de Heer was. Maar de Engel antwoordde: "Ik wil nog wel even blijven, maar ik zal niet van je maaltijd eten. Maar als je toch iets wil klaarmaken, offer het dan als brand-offer aan de Heer." 17 Toen vroeg Manoa hem: "Hoe heet u? Als gebeurt wat u heeft gezegd, willen we u kunnen bedanken." 18 Maar de Engel van de Heer zei tegen hem: "Waarom wil je weten wat mijn naam is? Want mijn naam is wonderlijk."
19 Toen nam Manoa een geitje en een brood en offerde die op een rots aan de Heer. Toen deed de Engel iets wonderlijks: 20 in de vlammen van het altaar steeg de Engel van de Heer op naar de hemel. Toen Manoa en zijn vrouw dat zagen, lieten ze zich op de grond vallen. 21 Daarna zagen ze de Engel van de Heer niet meer. Toen begreep Manoa dat het de Engel van de Heer geweest was. 22 Hij zei tegen zijn vrouw: "We zullen sterven, want we hebben God gezien!" 23 Maar zijn vrouw zei tegen hem: "Als de Heer ons had willen doden, zou Hij niet eerst ons offer hebben aangenomen. En Hij zou ons ook niet zulke dingen hebben beloofd en dit allemaal niet hebben gedaan."
24 De vrouw kreeg een zoon en ze noemden hem Simson. De jongen groeide op en de Heer was goed voor hem. 25 En de Geest van de Heer begon hem te leiden, in het gebied van Machane-Dan,[d] tussen Zora en Estaol.

The Birth of Samson(A)
13 Again the children of Israel (B)did evil in the sight of the Lord, and the Lord delivered them (C)into the hand of the Philistines for forty years.
2 Now there was a certain man from (D)Zorah, of the family of the Danites, whose name was Manoah; and his wife was barren and had no children. 3 And the (E)Angel of the Lord appeared to the woman and said to her, “Indeed now, you are barren and have borne no children, but you shall conceive and bear a son. 4 Now therefore, please be careful (F)not to drink wine or similar drink, and not to eat anything unclean. 5 For behold, you shall conceive and bear a son. And no (G)razor shall come upon his head, for the child shall be (H)a Nazirite to God from the womb; and he shall (I)begin to deliver Israel out of the hand of the Philistines.”
6 So the woman came and told her husband, saying, (J)“A Man of God came to me, and His (K)countenance[a] was like the countenance of the Angel of God, very awesome; but I (L)did not ask Him where He was from, and He did not tell me His name. 7 And He said to me, ‘Behold, you shall conceive and bear a son. Now drink no wine or similar drink, nor eat anything unclean, for the child shall be a Nazirite to God from the womb to the day of his death.’ ”
8 Then Manoah prayed to the Lord, and said, “O my Lord, please let the Man of God whom You sent come to us again and teach us what we shall do for the child who will be born.”
9 And God listened to the voice of Manoah, and the Angel of God came to the woman again as she was sitting in the field; but Manoah her husband was not with her. 10 Then the woman ran in haste and told her husband, and said to him, “Look, the Man who came to me the other day has just now appeared to me!”
11 So Manoah arose and followed his wife. When he came to the Man, he said to Him, “Are You the Man who spoke to this woman?”
And He said, “I am.”
12 Manoah said, “Now let Your words come to pass! What will be the boy’s rule of life, and his work?”
13 So the Angel of the Lord said to Manoah, “Of all that I said to the woman let her be careful. 14 She may not eat anything that comes from the vine, (M)nor may she drink wine or similar drink, nor eat anything unclean. All that I commanded her let her observe.”
15 Then Manoah said to the Angel of the Lord, “Please (N)let us detain You, and we will prepare a young goat for You.”
16 And the Angel of the Lord said to Manoah, “Though you detain Me, I will not eat your food. But if you offer a burnt offering, you must offer it to the Lord.” (For Manoah did not know He was the Angel of the Lord.)
17 Then Manoah said to the Angel of the Lord, “What is Your name, that when Your words come to pass we may honor You?”
18 And the Angel of the Lord said to him, (O)“Why do you ask My name, seeing it is wonderful?”
19 So Manoah took the young goat with the grain offering, (P)and offered it upon the rock to the Lord. And He did a wondrous thing while Manoah and his wife looked on— 20 it happened as the flame went up toward heaven from the altar—the Angel of the Lord ascended in the flame of the altar! When Manoah and his wife saw this, they (Q)fell on their faces to the ground. 21 When the Angel of the Lord appeared no more to Manoah and his wife, (R)then Manoah knew that He was the Angel of the Lord.
22 And Manoah said to his wife, (S)“We shall surely die, because we have seen God!”
23 But his wife said to him, “If the Lord had desired to kill us, He would not have accepted a burnt offering and a grain offering from our hands, nor would He have shown us all these things, nor would He have told us such things as these at this time.”
24 So the woman bore a son and called his name (T)Samson; and (U)the child grew, and the Lord blessed him. 25 (V)And the Spirit of the Lord began to move upon him at [b]Mahaneh Dan (W)between Zorah and (X)Eshtaol.

But Manoah her husband was not with her. 10 So the woman ran quickly and told her husband, “Behold, the man who came to me the other day has appeared to me.” 11 And Manoah arose and went after his wife and came to the man and said to him, “Are you the man who spoke to this woman?” And he said, “I am.” 12 And Manoah said, “Now when your words come true, (M)what is to be the child's manner of life, and what is his mission?” 13 And the angel of the Lord said to Manoah, “Of all that I said to the woman let her be careful. 14 She may not eat of anything that comes from the vine, (N)neither let her drink wine or strong drink, or eat any unclean thing. All that I commanded her let her observe.”
15 Manoah said to the angel of the Lord, “Please let us detain you and (O)prepare a young goat for you.” 16 And the angel of the Lord said to Manoah, “If you detain me, I will not eat of your food. 21 The angel of the Lord appeared no more to Manoah and to his wife. (U)Then Manoah knew that he was the angel of the Lord. 22 And Manoah said to his wife, (V)“We shall surely die, for we have seen God.” 23 But his wife said to him, “If the Lord had meant to kill us, he would not have accepted a burnt offering and a grain offering at our hands, or shown us all these things, or now announced to us such things as these.” 24 And the woman bore a son and called his name Samson. (W)And the young man grew, and the Lord blessed him. 25 (X)And the Spirit of the Lord began to stir him in Mahaneh-dan, between (Y)Zorah and Eshtaol.
