“See, I will defend your cause^(A)
    and avenge^(B) you;
I will dry up^(C) her sea
    and make her springs dry.

²⁷ who says to the watery deep, ‘Be dry,
    and I will dry up^(A) your streams,’

²⁵ “I have stirred^(A) up one from the north,^(B) and he comes—
    one from the rising sun who calls on my name.
He treads^(C) on rulers as if they were mortar,
    as if he were a potter treading the clay.

³⁸ A drought on^[a] her waters!^(A)
    They will dry^(B) up.
For it is a land of idols,^(C)
    idols that will go mad with terror.

³⁹ “So desert creatures^(D) and hyenas will live there,
    and there the owl will dwell.
It will never again be inhabited
    or lived in from generation to generation.^(E)
40 As I overthrew Sodom and Gomorrah^(F)
    along with their neighboring towns,”
declares the Lord,
“so no one will live there;
    no people will dwell in it.^(G)

    and dry up all their vegetation;
I will turn rivers into islands
    and dry up^(C) the pools.

He will break it up into seven streams
    so that anyone can cross over in sandals.^(E)
