54 1,2 Een leerzaam gedicht van David voor de koordirigent. Te spelen met begeleiding van een snaarinstrument. Hij schreef dit nadat de Zifieten hem aan Saul hadden verraden met de woorden: ‘Wist u dat David zich bij ons verborgen houdt?’
3 O God, bevrijd mij door uw sterke naam.
Laat uw kracht mij recht verschaffen.
4 O God, luister naar mijn gebed,
hoor toch naar de woorden van mijn mond.
5 Vreemde mensen keren zich tegen mij,
geweldenaars willen mij doden.
Zij denken niet aan God.
6 Maar God is mijn helper,
de Here geeft mij kracht en steunt mij.
7 God zal mij wreken tegenover de mensen
die mij naar het leven staan.
Vernietig hen in uw trouw aan mij.
8 Graag zal ik U offers brengen,
ik doe dat uit dankbaarheid aan U.
Here, ik zal uw naam loven en prijzen,
want U bent zo goed voor mij.
9 God heeft mij bevrijd uit alle angst en gevaar
en nu kan ik met vreugde naar mijn vijanden kijken.

54 Save me, O God, by thy name, and judge me by thy strength.
2 Hear my prayer, O God; give ear to the words of my mouth.
3 For strangers are risen up against me, and oppressors seek after my soul: they have not set God before them. Selah.
4 Behold, God is mine helper: the Lord is with them that uphold my soul.
5 He shall reward evil unto mine enemies: cut them off in thy truth.
6 I will freely sacrifice unto thee: I will praise thy name, O Lord; for it is good.
7 For he hath delivered me out of all trouble: and mine eye hath seen his desire upon mine enemies.

54 O God, save me by your (C)name,
and vindicate me by your might.
2 O God, (D)hear my prayer;
give ear to the words of my mouth.
3 (E)For (F)strangers[b] have risen against me;
ruthless men (G)seek my life;
they do not set God before themselves. Selah
4 Behold, (H)God is my helper;
the Lord is the upholder of my life.
5 He will return the evil to my enemies;
in your (I)faithfulness (J)put an end to them.
6 With a freewill offering I will sacrifice to you;
I will give thanks to your name, O Lord, (K)for it is good.
7 For he has delivered me from every trouble,
and my eye has (L)looked in triumph on my enemies.
