74 «Cantico di Asaf» O DIO, perché ci hai respinti per sempre? Perché arde l'ira tua contro il gregge del tuo pascolo?
2 Ricordati del tuo popolo, che una volta acquistasti, che tu riscattasti perché fosse la tribú della tua eredità, di questo monte Sion, sul quale hai abitato.
3 Dirigi i tuoi passi a queste rovine irreparabili; il nemico ha devastato tutto nel santuario.
4 I tuoi nemici hanno ruggito nel luogo delle tue assemblee; vi hanno posto le loro insegne per stendardi.
5 Sembrava che vibrassero delle scuri nel folto di una selva.
6 E ora con asce e martelli demoliscono tutte le sue sculture.
7 Hanno dato alle fiamme il tuo santuario; hanno profanato la dimora del tuo nome, gettandola a terra.
8 Hanno detto in cuor loro: «Distruggiamoli tutti quanti»; hanno arso tutti i luoghi delle assemblee divine nel paese.
9 Noi non vediamo piú i nostri segni non vi è piú profeta, e tra noi non vi è alcuno che sappia fino a quando.
10 Fino a quando, o DIO, oltraggerà l'avversario? Il nemico disprezzerà forse il tuo nome per sempre?
11 Perché ritiri la tua mano, proprio la tua destra? Tirala fuori dal tuo seno e distruggili.
12 Ma DIO è il mio re dai tempi antichi; è lui che opera la salvezza sulla terra.
13 Con la tua forza dividesti il mare e schiacciasti la testa dei mostri marini nelle acque.
14 Frantumasti le teste del Leviathan e le desti in pasto al popolo del deserto.
15 Facesti sgorgare fonti e torrenti e seccasti fiumi perenni.
16 Tuo è il giorno, tua è anche la notte; tu hai stabilito la luce e il sole.
17 Tu hai fissato tutti i confini della terra e hai fatto l'estate e l'inverno.
18 Ricordati di questo, o Eterno, che il nemico ti ha oltraggiato e che un popolo stolto ha disprezzato il tuo nome.
19 Non abbandonare alle fiere la vita della tua tortora; non dimenticare per sempre la vita dei tuoi afflitti.
20 Abbi riguardo al patto, perché i luoghi tenebrosi della terra sono pieni di covi di violenza.
21 Non permettere che l'oppresso se ne torni svergognato; fa' che l'afflitto e il bisognoso lodino il tuo nome.
22 Levati, o DIO, difendi la tua causa! Ricordati che lo stolto ti oltraggia tutto il giorno.
23 Non dimenticare il grido dei tuoi nemici; lo strepito di quelli che si levano contro di te sale al cielo continuamente.

Lamento dopo il saccheggio del tempio
74 Maskil. Di Asaf.
O Dio, perché ci respingi per sempre,
perché divampa la tua ira
contro il gregge del tuo pascolo?
2 Ricordati del popolo
che ti sei acquistato nei tempi antichi.
Hai riscattato la tribù che è tuo possesso,
il monte Sion, dove hai preso dimora.
3 Volgi i tuoi passi a queste rovine eterne:
il nemico ha devastato tutto nel tuo santuario.
4 Ruggirono i tuoi avversari nel tuo tempio,
issarono i loro vessilli come insegna.
5 Come chi vibra in alto la scure
nel folto di una selva,
6 con l'ascia e con la scure
frantumavano le sue porte.
7 Hanno dato alle fiamme il tuo santuario,
hanno profanato e demolito la dimora del tuo nome;
8 pensavano: «Distruggiamoli tutti»;
hanno bruciato tutti i santuari di Dio nel paese.
9 Non vediamo più le nostre insegne,
non ci sono più profeti
e tra di noi nessuno sa fino a quando...
10 Fino a quando, o Dio, insulterà l'avversario,
il nemico continuerà a disprezzare il tuo nome?
11 Perché ritiri la tua mano
e trattieni in seno la destra?
12 Eppure Dio è nostro re dai tempi antichi,
ha operato la salvezza nella nostra terra.
13 Tu con potenza hai diviso il mare,
hai schiacciato la testa dei draghi sulle acque.
14 Al Leviatàn hai spezzato la testa,
lo hai dato in pasto ai mostri marini.
15 Fonti e torrenti tu hai fatto scaturire,
hai inaridito fiumi perenni.
16 Tuo è il giorno e tua è la notte,
la luna e il sole tu li hai creati.
17 Tu hai fissato i confini della terra,
l'estate e l'inverno tu li hai ordinati.
18 Ricorda: il nemico ha insultato Dio,
un popolo stolto ha disprezzato il tuo nome.
19 Non abbandonare alle fiere la vita di chi ti loda,
non dimenticare mai la vita dei tuoi poveri.
20 Sii fedele alla tua alleanza;
gli angoli della terra sono covi di violenza.
21 L'umile non torni confuso,
l'afflitto e il povero lodino il tuo nome.
22 Sorgi, Dio, difendi la tua causa,
ricorda che lo stolto ti insulta tutto il giorno.
23 Non dimenticare lo strepito dei tuoi nemici;
il tumulto dei tuoi avversari cresce senza fine.

1 O God, why have you rejected(A) us forever?(B)
Why does your anger smolder against the sheep of your pasture?(C)
2 Remember the nation you purchased(D) long ago,(E)
the people of your inheritance,(F) whom you redeemed(G)—
Mount Zion,(H) where you dwelt.(I)
3 Turn your steps toward these everlasting ruins,(J)
all this destruction the enemy has brought on the sanctuary.
4 Your foes roared(K) in the place where you met with us;
they set up their standards(L) as signs.
5 They behaved like men wielding axes
to cut through a thicket of trees.(M)
6 They smashed all the carved(N) paneling
with their axes and hatchets.
7 They burned your sanctuary to the ground;
they defiled(O) the dwelling place(P) of your Name.(Q)
8 They said in their hearts, “We will crush(R) them completely!”
They burned(S) every place where God was worshiped in the land.
9 We are given no signs from God;(T)
no prophets(U) are left,
and none of us knows how long this will be.
10 How long(V) will the enemy mock(W) you, God?
Will the foe revile(X) your name forever?
11 Why do you hold back your hand, your right hand?(Y)
Take it from the folds of your garment(Z) and destroy them!
13 It was you who split open the sea(AC) by your power;
you broke the heads of the monster(AD) in the waters.
14 It was you who crushed the heads of Leviathan(AE)
and gave it as food to the creatures of the desert.(AF)
15 It was you who opened up springs(AG) and streams;
you dried up(AH) the ever-flowing rivers.
16 The day is yours, and yours also the night;
you established the sun and moon.(AI)
17 It was you who set all the boundaries(AJ) of the earth;
you made both summer and winter.(AK)
18 Remember how the enemy has mocked you, Lord,
how foolish people(AL) have reviled your name.
19 Do not hand over the life of your dove(AM) to wild beasts;
do not forget the lives of your afflicted(AN) people forever.
20 Have regard for your covenant,(AO)
because haunts of violence fill the dark places(AP) of the land.
21 Do not let the oppressed(AQ) retreat in disgrace;
may the poor and needy(AR) praise your name.
22 Rise up,(AS) O God, and defend your cause;
remember how fools(AT) mock you all day long.
23 Do not ignore the clamor(AU) of your adversaries,(AV)
the uproar(AW) of your enemies,(AX) which rises continually.
