[a]Turn Your footsteps toward the (A)perpetual ruins;
The enemy (B)has damaged everything within the sanctuary.
Your adversaries have (C)roared in the midst of Your meeting place;
They have set up their (D)own [b]standards (E)for signs.
It seems as if one had lifted up
His [c](F)axe in a [d]forest of trees.
And now [e]all its (G)carved work
They smash with hatchet and [f]hammers.
They have [g](H)burned Your sanctuary [h]to the ground;
They have (I)defiled the dwelling place of Your name.
They (J)said in their heart, “Let us [i]completely [j]subdue them.”
They have burned all the meeting places of God in the land.
We do not see our (K)signs;
There is (L)no longer any prophet,
Nor is there any among us who knows (M)how long.

And the enemy (O)spurn Your name forever?

A Lament over the Destruction of Jerusalem, and Prayer for Help.

A Psalm of Asaph.

79 O God, the (A)nations have [a]invaded (B)Your inheritance;
They have defiled Your (C)holy temple;
They have (D)laid Jerusalem in ruins.
They have given the (E)dead bodies of Your servants for food to the birds of the heavens,
The flesh of Your godly ones to the beasts of the earth.
They have poured out their blood like water round about Jerusalem;
And there was (F)no one to bury them.
We have become a (G)reproach to our neighbors,
A scoffing and derision to those around us.

You have become (A)guilty by [a]the blood which you have shed, and defiled by your idols which you have made. Thus you have brought your [b]day near and have come to your years; therefore I have made you a (B)reproach to the nations and a mocking to all the lands.
