Psalm 60

New International Version

Psalm 60^[a]^(A)

For the director of music. To the tune of “The Lily of the Covenant.” A miktam^[b] of David. For teaching. When he fought Aram Naharaim^[c] and Aram Zobah,^[d] and when Joab returned and struck down twelve thousand Edomites in the Valley of Salt.^(B)

¹You have rejected us,^(C) God, and burst upon us;
    you have been angry^(D)—now restore us!^(E)
²You have shaken the land^(F) and torn it open;
    mend its fractures,^(G) for it is quaking.
³You have shown your people desperate times;^(H)
    you have given us wine that makes us stagger.^(I)
⁴But for those who fear you, you have raised a banner^(J)
    to be unfurled against the bow.^[e]

⁵Save us and help us with your right hand,^(K)
    that those you love^(L) may be delivered.
⁶God has spoken from his sanctuary:
    “In triumph I will parcel out Shechem^(M)
    and measure off the Valley of Sukkoth.^(N)
⁷Gilead^(O) is mine, and Manasseh is mine;
    Ephraim^(P) is my helmet,
    Judah^(Q) is my scepter.^(R)
⁸Moab is my washbasin,
    on Edom I toss my sandal;
    over Philistia I shout in triumph.^(S)”

⁹Who will bring me to the fortified city?
    Who will lead me to Edom?
¹⁰Is it not you, God, you who have now rejected us
    and no longer go out with our armies?^(T)
¹¹Give us aid against the enemy,
    for human help is worthless.^(U)
¹²With God we will gain the victory,
    and he will trample down our enemies.^(V)

Israel’s Sin

¹²Ephraim has surrounded me with lies,^(A)
Israel with deceit.
And Judah is unruly against God,
even against the faithful^(B) Holy One.^[a]^(C)

12 ^[b]¹Ephraim^(D) feeds on the wind;^(E)
    he pursues the east wind all day
    and multiplies lies and violence.^(F)
He makes a treaty with Assyria^(G)
    and sends olive oil to Egypt.^(H)
²The Lord has a charge^(I) to bring against Judah;^(J)
    he will punish^(K) Jacob^[c] according to his ways
    and repay him according to his deeds.^(L)
³In the womb he grasped his brother’s heel;^(M)
    as a man he struggled^(N) with God.
⁴He struggled with the angel and overcame him;
    he wept and begged for his favor.
He found him at Bethel^(O)
    and talked with him there—
⁵the Lord God Almighty,
    the Lord is his name!^(P)
⁶But you must return^(Q) to your God;
    maintain love and justice,^(R)
    and wait for your God always.^(S)

⁷The merchant uses dishonest scales^(T)
    and loves to defraud.
⁸Ephraim boasts,^(U)
    “I am very rich; I have become wealthy.^(V)
With all my wealth they will not find in me
    any iniquity or sin.”

⁹“I have been the Lord your God
    ever since you came out of Egypt;^(W)
I will make you live in tents^(X) again,
    as in the days of your appointed festivals.
¹⁰I spoke to the prophets,
    gave them many visions
    and told parables^(Y) through them.”^(Z)

¹¹Is Gilead wicked?^(AA)
    Its people are worthless!
Do they sacrifice bulls in Gilgal?^(AB)
    Their altars will be like piles of stones
    on a plowed field.^(AC)
¹²Jacob fled to the country of Aram^[d];^(AD)
    Israel served to get a wife,
    and to pay for her he tended sheep.^(AE)
¹³The Lord used a prophet to bring Israel up from Egypt,^(AF)
    by a prophet he cared for him.^(AG)
¹⁴But Ephraim has aroused his bitter anger;
    his Lord will leave on him the guilt of his bloodshed^(AH)
    and will repay him for his contempt.^(AI)

¹⁸Wives, submit yourselves to your husbands,^(B) as is fitting in the Lord.

¹⁹Husbands, love your wives and do not be harsh with them.

²⁰Children, obey your parents in everything, for this pleases the Lord.

²¹Fathers,^[a] do not embitter your children, or they will become discouraged.

²²Slaves, obey your earthly masters in everything; and do it, not only when their eye is on you and to curry their favor, but with sincerity of heart and reverence for the Lord. ²³Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for human masters, ²⁴since you know that you will receive an inheritance^(C) from the Lord as a reward.^(D) It is the Lord Christ you are serving. ²⁵Anyone who does wrong will be repaid for their wrongs, and there is no favoritism.^(E)
