To the Chief Musician; for Jeduthun [founder of an official musical family]. A Psalm of David.
1 I said, I will take heed and guard my ways, that I may sin not with my tongue; I will muzzle my mouth as with a bridle while the wicked are before me.
2 I was dumb with silence, I held my peace without profit and had no comfort away from good, while my distress was renewed.
3 My heart was hot within me. While I was musing, the fire burned; then I spoke with my tongue:
4 Lord, make me to know my end and [to appreciate] the measure of my days—what it is; let me know and realize how frail I am [how transient is my stay here].
5 Behold, You have made my days as [short as] handbreadths, and my lifetime is as nothing in Your sight. Truly every man at his best is merely a breath! Selah [pause, and think calmly of that]!
6 Surely every man walks to and fro—like a shadow in a pantomime; surely for futility and emptiness he is in turmoil; each one heaps up riches, not knowing who will gather them.(A)
7 And now, Lord, what do I wait for and expect? My hope and expectation are in You.
8 Deliver me from all my transgressions; make me not the scorn and reproach of the [self-confident] fool!
9 I am dumb, I open not my mouth, for it is You Who has done it.
10 Remove Your stroke away from me; I am consumed by the conflict and the blow of Your hand.
11 When with rebukes You correct and chasten man for sin, You waste his beauty like a moth and what is dear to him consumes away; surely every man is a mere breath. Selah [pause, and think calmly of that]!
12 Hear my prayer, O Lord, and give ear to my cry; hold not Your peace at my tears! For I am Your passing guest, a temporary resident, as all my fathers were.
13 O look away from me and spare me, that I may recover cheerfulness and encouraging strength and know gladness before I go and am no more!

1 I said, “I will watch my ways(A)
and keep my tongue from sin;(B)
I will put a muzzle on my mouth(C)
while in the presence of the wicked.”
2 So I remained utterly silent,(D)
not even saying anything good.
But my anguish(E) increased;
3 my heart grew hot(F) within me.
While I meditated,(G) the fire(H) burned;
then I spoke with my tongue:
4 “Show me, Lord, my life’s end
and the number of my days;(I)
let me know how fleeting(J) my life is.(K)
5 You have made my days(L) a mere handbreadth;
the span of my years is as nothing before you.
Everyone is but a breath,(M)
even those who seem secure.[b]
6 “Surely everyone goes around(N) like a mere phantom;(O)
in vain they rush about,(P) heaping up wealth(Q)
without knowing whose it will finally be.(R)
7 “But now, Lord, what do I look for?
My hope is in you.(S)
8 Save me(T) from all my transgressions;(U)
do not make me the scorn(V) of fools.
9 I was silent;(W) I would not open my mouth,(X)
for you are the one who has done this.(Y)
10 Remove your scourge from me;
I am overcome by the blow(Z) of your hand.(AA)
11 When you rebuke(AB) and discipline(AC) anyone for their sin,
you consume(AD) their wealth like a moth(AE)—
surely everyone is but a breath.(AF)

39 Aking sinabi, (A)Ako'y magiingat sa aking mga lakad,
Upang huwag akong magkasala ng aking dila:
Aking iingatan ang aking dila ng paningkaw,
Samantalang ang masama ay nasa harap ko.
2 (B)Ako'y napipi ng pagtahimik, ako'y tumahimik pati sa mabuti;
At ang aking kalungkutan ay lumubha.
3 Ang aking puso ay (C)mainit sa loob ko;
Habang ako'y nagbubulaybulay ay nagalab ang apoy:
Nang magkagayo'y nagsalita ako ng aking dila:
4 Panginoon, (D)ipakilala mo sa akin ang aking wakas,
At ang sukat ng aking mga kaarawan, kung ano;
Ipakilala mo sa akin kung gaano kahina ako.
5 Narito, gaya ng mga dangkal ginawa mo ang aking mga kaarawan;
At ang (E)aking gulang ay tila wala sa harap mo:
Tunay na bawa't tao sa kaniyang mainam na kalagayan ay pawang (F)walang kabuluhan. (Selah)
6 Tunay na bawa't tao ay lumalakad sa walang kabuluhang lilim:
(G)Tunay na sila'y nagugulo ng walang kabuluhan:
(H)Kaniyang ibinubunton ang mga kayamanan, at hindi nalalaman kung sinong nagsisipulot.
7 At ngayon, Panginoon, ano pa ang aking hinihintay?
(I)Ang aking pagasa ay nasa iyo.
8 Iligtas mo ako sa lahat ng aking mga pagsalangsang:
(J)Huwag mo akong gawing katuyaan ng hangal.
9 (K)Ako'y pipi, hindi ko ibinuka ang aking bibig;
Sapagka't (L)ikaw ang gumawa.
10 (M)Iurong mo sa akin ang iyong suntok:
Ako'y bugbog na sa suntok ng iyong kamay.
11 Pagka sa pamamagitan ng mga parusa dahil sa kasamaan ay iyong sinasaway ang tao,
(N)Iyong sinisira ang kaniyang kagandahan na parang pagsira ng tanga:
Tunay na bawa't tao ay walang kabuluhan. (Selah)
12 Iyong dinggin ang aking dalangin, Oh Panginoon, at pakinggan mo ang aking daing:
(O)Huwag kang tumahimik sa aking mga luha:
(P)Sapagka't ako'y taga ibang lupa na kasama mo;
Nakikipamayan na (Q)gaya ng lahat na aking mga magulang.
13 (R)Oh tulungan mo ako, upang ako'y magbawing lakas,
Bago ako manaw, at mawala.
