^4 (D)Let them be ^(E)put to shame and dishonor
    who seek after my life!
Let them be ^(F)turned back and disappointed
    who devise evil against me!
⁵ Let them be like ^(G)chaff before the wind,
    with the angel of the Lord driving them away!
⁶ Let their way be dark and ^(H)slippery,
    with the angel of the Lord pursuing them!

⁷ For ^(I)without cause ^(J)they hid their net for me;
    without cause they dug ^(K)a pit for my life.^[b]
8 Let ^(L)destruction come upon him ^(M)when he does not know it!
And let the net that he hid ensnare him;
    let him fall into it—to his destruction!

⁹ Then my soul will rejoice in the Lord,
    ^(N)exulting in his salvation.
¹⁰ All my ^(O)bones shall say,
    “O Lord, ^(P)who is like you,
delivering the poor
    from him who is too strong for him,
    the poor and needy from him who robs him?”

^11 (Q)Malicious^[c] witnesses rise up;
    they ask me of things that I do not know.
^12 (R)They repay me evil for good;
    my soul is bereft.^[d]
13 But I, ^(S)when they were sick—
    I ^(T)wore sackcloth;
    I ^(U)afflicted myself with fasting;
I prayed ^(V)with head bowed^[e] on my chest.
¹⁴     I went about as though I grieved for my friend or my brother;
as one who laments his mother,
    I ^(W)bowed down in mourning.

¹⁵ But at my stumbling they rejoiced and gathered;
    they gathered together against me;
^(X)wretches whom I did not know
    tore at me without ceasing;
¹⁶ like profane mockers at a feast,^[f]
    they ^(Y)gnash at me with their teeth.

¹⁷ How long, O Lord, will you ^(Z)look on?
    Rescue me from their destruction,
    ^(AA)my precious life from the lions!
¹⁸ I will thank you in ^(AB)the great congregation;
    in the mighty throng I will praise you.

^19 (AC)Let not those rejoice over me
    who are ^(AD)wrongfully my foes,
and let not those ^(AE)wink the eye
    who ^(AF)hate me ^(AG)without cause.
²⁰ For they do not speak peace,
    but against those who are quiet in the land
    they devise words of deceit.
²¹ They ^(AH)open wide their mouths against me;
    they say, ^(AI)“Aha, Aha!
    Our eyes have seen it!”

^22 (AJ)You have seen, O Lord; ^(AK)be not silent!
    O Lord, ^(AL)be not far from me!
²³ Awake and ^(AM)rouse yourself for ^(AN)my vindication,
    for my cause, my God and my Lord!
^24 (AO)Vindicate me, O Lord, my God,
    according to your righteousness,
    and ^(AP)let them not rejoice over me!
²⁵ Let them not say in their hearts,
    ^(AQ)“Aha, our heart's desire!”
Let them not say, ^(AR)“We have swallowed him up.”

²⁶ Let them be ^(AS)put to shame and disappointed altogether
    who rejoice at my calamity!
Let them be ^(AT)clothed with shame and dishonor
    who ^(AU)magnify themselves against me!

²⁷ Let those who delight in my righteousness
    shout for joy and be glad
    ^(AV)and say evermore,
^(AW)“Great is the Lord,
    who ^(AX)delights in the welfare of his servant!”
²⁸ Then my ^(AY)tongue shall tell of your righteousness
    and of your praise all the day long.

³ For behold, they ^(I)lie in wait for my life;
    fierce men ^(J)stir up strife against me.
^(K)For no transgression or sin of mine, O Lord,
⁴     for no fault of mine, they run and make ready.
^(L)Awake, come to meet me, and see!
⁵     You, ^(M)Lord God of hosts, are God of Israel.
Rouse yourself to punish all the nations;
    spare none of those who treacherously plot evil. Selah

⁶ Each evening they ^(N)come back,
    howling like dogs
    and prowling about the city.
⁷ There they are, ^(O)bellowing with their mouths
    with ^(P)swords in their lips—
    for ^(Q)“Who,” they think,^[b] “will hear us?”

⁸ But you, O Lord, ^(R)laugh at them;
    you hold all the nations in derision.
⁹ O my Strength, I will watch for you,
    for you, O God, are ^(S)my fortress.
^10 (T)My God in his steadfast love^{[c] (U)}will meet me;
    God will let me ^(V)look in triumph on my enemies.

¹¹ Kill them not, lest my people forget;
    make them totter^[d] by your power and ^(W)bring them down,
    O Lord, our ^(X)shield!
¹² For ^(Y)the sin of their mouths, the words of their lips,
    let them be trapped in their pride.
For the cursing and lies that they utter,
^{13     (Z)}consume them in wrath;
    consume them till they are no more,
that they may ^(AA)know that God rules over Jacob
    to ^(AB)the ends of the earth. Selah

^14 (AC)Each evening they come back,
    howling like dogs
    and prowling about the city.

    and growl if they do not get their fill.

¹⁶ But I will sing of your strength;
    I will sing aloud of your steadfast love in the morning.
For you have been to me ^(AE)a fortress
    and ^(AF)a refuge in ^(AG)the day of my distress.
¹⁷ O my Strength, I will sing praises to you,
    for you, O God, ^(AH)are my fortress,
    ^(AI)the God who shows me steadfast love.

^4 (I)More in number than the hairs of my head
    are ^(J)those who hate me ^(K)without cause;
mighty are those who would destroy me,
    ^(L)those who attack me with lies.
What I did not steal
    must I now restore?
⁵ O God, you know my folly;
    the wrongs I have done are not hidden from you.

⁶ Let not those who hope in you ^(M)be put to shame through me,
    O Lord God of hosts;
let not those who seek you be brought to dishonor through me,
    O God of Israel.
⁷ For it is ^(N)for your sake that I have borne reproach,
    that dishonor has covered my face.
⁸ I have become ^(O)a stranger to my brothers,
    an alien to my mother's sons.

⁹ For ^(P)zeal for your house has consumed me,
    and ^(Q)the reproaches of those who reproach you have fallen on me.
¹⁰ When I wept and humbled^[b] my soul with fasting,
    it became my reproach.
¹¹ When I made ^(R)sackcloth my clothing,
    I became ^(S)a byword to them.
¹² I am the talk of those who ^(T)sit in the gate,
    and the drunkards make ^(U)songs about me.

¹³ But as for me, my ^(V)prayer is to you, O Lord.
    At ^(W)an acceptable time, O God,
    in the abundance of your steadfast love answer me in your saving faithfulness.
¹⁴ Deliver me
    from sinking in ^(X)the mire;
^(Y)let me be delivered from my enemies
    and from ^(Z)the deep waters.
¹⁵ Let not the flood sweep over me,
    or the deep swallow me up,
    or ^(AA)the pit close ^(AB)its mouth over me.

¹⁶ Answer me, O Lord, for your ^(AC)steadfast love is good;
    according to your abundant ^(AD)mercy, ^(AE)turn to me.
^17 (AF)Hide not your face from your servant,
    ^(AG)for I am in distress; ^(AH)make haste to answer me.
¹⁸ Draw near to my soul, redeem me;
    ransom me because of my enemies!

¹⁹ You know my ^(AI)reproach,
    and my shame and my dishonor;
    my foes are all known to you.
^20 (AJ)Reproaches have broken my heart,
    so that I am in ^(AK)despair.
I ^(AL)looked for ^(AM)pity, but there was none,
    and for ^(AN)comforters, but I found none.
²¹ They gave me ^(AO)poison for food,
    and for my thirst they gave me ^(AP)sour wine to drink.

^22 (AQ)Let their own ^(AR)table before them become a snare;
    ^(AS)and when they are at peace, let it become a trap.^[c]
23 (AT)Let their eyes be darkened, so that they cannot see,
    ^(AU)and make their loins tremble continually.
²⁴ Pour out your indignation upon them,
    and let your burning anger overtake them.
^25 (AV)May their camp be a desolation;
    let no one dwell in their tents.
²⁶ For they ^(AW)persecute him whom ^(AX)you have struck down,
    and they recount the pain of ^(AY)those you have wounded.
^27 (AZ)Add to them punishment upon punishment;
    may they have no acquittal from you.^[d]
28 Let them be ^(BA)blotted out of the book of the living;
    let them not be ^(BB)enrolled among the righteous.

²⁹ But I am afflicted and in pain;
    let your salvation, O God, ^(BC)set me on high!

³⁰ I will ^(BD)praise the name of God with a song;
    I will ^(BE)magnify him with ^(BF)thanksgiving.
³¹ This will ^(BG)please the Lord more than an ox
    or a bull ^(BH)with horns and hoofs.
³² When ^(BI)the humble see it they will be glad;
    you who seek God, ^(BJ)let your hearts revive.
³³ For the Lord hears the needy
    and ^(BK)does not despise his own people who are prisoners.

³⁴ Let ^(BL)heaven and earth praise him,
    the seas and everything that moves in them.
³⁵ For ^(BM)God will save Zion
    and build up the cities of Judah,
and people shall dwell there and possess it;
^{36     (BN)}the offspring of his servants shall inherit it,
    and those who love his name shall dwell in it.

^6 (H)Appoint a wicked man ^(I)against him;
    let an accuser stand ^(J)at his right hand.
⁷ When he is tried, let him come forth guilty;
    let his ^(K)prayer be counted as sin!
⁸ May his ^(L)days be few;
    may ^(M)another take his ^(N)office!
⁹ May his ^(O)children be fatherless
    and his wife a widow!
¹⁰ May his children ^(P)wander about and beg,
    ^(Q)seeking food far from the ruins they inhabit!
¹¹ May ^(R)the creditor seize all that he has;
    may ^(S)strangers plunder the fruits of his toil!
¹² Let there be none to ^(T)extend kindness to him,
    nor any to ^(U)pity his fatherless children!
¹³ May his ^(V)posterity be cut off;
    may his ^(W)name be blotted out in the second generation!
¹⁴ May ^(X)the iniquity of his fathers be remembered before the Lord,
    and let not the sin of his mother be ^(Y)blotted out!
^15 (Z)Let them be before the Lord continually,
    that he may ^(AA)cut off the memory of them from the earth!

¹⁶ For he did not remember to show kindness,
    but pursued ^(AB)the poor and needy
    and ^(AC)the brokenhearted, to put them to death.
^17 (AD)He loved to curse; let curses come^[b] upon him!
    He did not delight in blessing; may it be far^[c] from him!
¹⁸ He ^(AE)clothed himself with cursing as his coat;
    may it ^(AF)soak^[d] into his body like water,
    like oil into his bones!
¹⁹ May it be like a garment that he wraps around him,
    like a belt that he puts on every day!
²⁰ May this be the reward of my ^(AG)accusers from the Lord,
    of those who speak evil against my life!

²¹ But you, O God my Lord,
    deal on my behalf ^(AH)for your name's sake;
    because your ^(AI)steadfast love is good, deliver me!
²² For I am ^(AJ)poor and needy,
    and my heart is stricken within me.
²³ I am gone like ^(AK)a shadow at evening;
    I am ^(AL)shaken off like a locust.
²⁴ My knees are weak ^(AM)through fasting;
    my ^(AN)body has become gaunt, with no fat.
²⁵ I am ^(AO)an object of scorn to my accusers;
    when they see me, they ^(AP)wag their heads.

^26 (AQ)Help me, O Lord my God!
    Save me according to your steadfast love!
²⁷ Let them ^(AR)know that this is your hand;
    you, O Lord, have done it!
^28 (AS)Let them curse, but you will bless!
    They arise and are put to shame, but ^(AT)your servant will be glad!
²⁹ May my accusers be ^(AU)clothed with dishonor;
    may they ^(AV)be wrapped in their own shame as in a cloak!

³⁰ With my mouth I will give great thanks to the Lord;
    I will ^(AW)praise him in the midst of the throng.
³¹ For he stands ^(AX)at the right hand of the needy one,
    to save him from those who condemn his soul to death.
