New English Translation

Psalm 106[a]

106 Praise the Lord.
Give thanks to the Lord, for he is good,
and his loyal love endures.[b]
2 Who can adequately recount the Lord’s mighty acts,
or relate all his praiseworthy deeds?[c]
3 How blessed are those who promote justice,
and do what is right all the time.
4 Remember me, O Lord, when you show favor to your people.
Pay attention to me, when you deliver,
5 so I may see the prosperity[d] of your chosen ones,
rejoice along with your nation,[e]
and boast along with the people who belong to you.[f]
6 We have sinned like[g] our ancestors;[h]
we have done wrong, we have done evil.
7 Our ancestors in Egypt failed to appreciate your miraculous deeds.
They failed to remember your many acts of loyal love,
and they rebelled at the sea, by the Red Sea.[i]
8 Yet he delivered them for the sake of his reputation,[j]
that he might reveal his power.
9 He shouted at[k] the Red Sea and it dried up;
he led them through the deep water as if it were a desert.
10 He delivered them from the power[l] of the one who hated them,
and rescued[m] them from the power[n] of the enemy.
11 The water covered their enemies;
not even one of them survived.[o]
12 They believed his promises;[p]
they sang praises to him.
13 They quickly forgot what he had done;[q]
they did not wait for his instructions.[r]
14 In the wilderness they had an insatiable craving[s] for meat;[t]
they challenged God[u] in the wastelands.
15 He granted their request,
then struck them with a disease.[v]
16 In the camp they resented[w] Moses,
and Aaron, the Lord’s holy priest.[x]
17 The earth opened up and swallowed Dathan;
it engulfed[y] the group led by Abiram.[z]
18 Fire burned their group;
the flames scorched the wicked.[aa]
19 They made an image of a calf at Horeb,
and worshiped a metal idol.
20 They traded their majestic God[ab]
for the image of an ox that eats grass.
21 They rejected[ac] the God who delivered them,
the one who performed great deeds in Egypt,
22 amazing feats in the land of Ham,
mighty acts[ad] by the Red Sea.
23 He threatened[ae] to destroy them,
but[af] Moses, his chosen one, interceded with him[ag]
and turned back his destructive anger.[ah]
24 They rejected the fruitful land;[ai]
they did not believe his promise.[aj]
25 They grumbled in their tents;[ak]
they did not obey[al] the Lord.
26 So he made a solemn vow[am]
that he would make them die[an] in the wilderness,
27 make their descendants[ao] die[ap] among the nations,
and scatter them among foreign lands.[aq]
28 They worshiped[ar] Baal of Peor,
and ate sacrifices offered to the dead.[as]
29 They made the Lord angry[at] by their actions,
and a plague broke out among them.
30 Phinehas took a stand and intervened,[au]
and the plague subsided.
31 This was credited to Phinehas as a righteous act
for all generations to come.[av]
32 They made him angry by the waters of Meribah,
and Moses suffered[aw] because of them,
33 for they aroused[ax] his temper,[ay]
and he spoke rashly.[az]
34 They did not destroy the nations,[ba]
as the Lord had commanded them to do.
35 They mixed in with the nations
and learned their ways.[bb]
36 They worshiped[bc] their idols,
which became a snare to them.[bd]
37 They sacrificed their sons and daughters to demons.[be]
38 They shed innocent blood—
the blood of their sons and daughters,
whom they sacrificed to the idols of Canaan.
The land was polluted by bloodshed.[bf]
39 They were defiled by their deeds,
and unfaithful in their actions.[bg]
40 So the Lord was angry with his people[bh]
and despised the people who belonged to him.[bi]
41 He handed them over to[bj] the nations,
and those who hated them ruled over them.
42 Their enemies oppressed them;
they were subject to their authority.[bk]
43 Many times he delivered[bl] them,
but they had a rebellious attitude,[bm]
and degraded themselves[bn] by their sin.
44 Yet he took notice of their distress,
when he heard their cry for help.
45 He remembered his covenant with them,
and relented[bo] because of his great loyal love.
46 He caused all their conquerors[bp]
to have pity on them.
47 Deliver us, O Lord, our God.
Gather us from among the nations.
Then we will give thanks[bq] to your holy name,
and boast about your praiseworthy deeds.[br]
48 The Lord God of Israel deserves praise,[bs]
in the future and forevermore.[bt]
Let all the people say, “We agree![bu] Praise the Lord!”[bv]

Wie kan Hem genoeg prijzen?
3 Het is heerlijk voor je als je leeft zoals Hij het wil,
als je altijd eerlijk en rechtvaardig bent.
4 Denk aan mij, Heer!
Want U houdt toch van uw volk?
Kom naar mij toe, red mij, zegen mij.
5 Want dan zal ik zien hoe goed U bent
voor de mensen die U heeft uitgekozen.
Dan zal ik blij zijn, samen met uw volk.

6 We zijn U ongehoorzaam geweest,
net als onze voorouders.
We hebben ons niets van U aangetrokken.
7 Onze voorouders in Egypte trokken zich niets aan van uw wonderen.
Ze vergaten de ontelbare goede dingen die U voor hen deed.

8 Ze waren koppig tegen U bij de Rietzee.
Maar U redde hen vanwege uw eigen eer.
Zo zouden mensen weten hoe machtig U bent.
9 U sprak dreigend tegen de Rietzee, en de zee viel droog.
Zo liet U het volk het diepe water oversteken alsof het droog land was.

16 Ze werden ook jaloers op Mozes en Aäron,
die door U waren uitgekozen om U te dienen.
17 Daarom ging de aarde open en slokte Datan en Abiram op.
De aarde sloot zich boven hen.
18 Vuur viel op alle mensen die met hen meededen.
De vlammen verbrandden de mensen die tegen U in opstand waren gekomen.

19 Bij Horeb maakten ze een kalf van goud
en aanbaden dat als hun god.
20 Hun God, op wie ze eerst zo trots waren,
ruilden ze in voor een beeld van een dier dat gras eet.
21 Ze vergaten God, hun Redder,
die in Egypte zulke machtige dingen voor hen had gedaan:
22 grote wonderen in Egypte,
indrukwekkende dingen bij de Rietzee.

23 Daarom besloot U dat U hen zou vernietigen. En dat zou U ook gedaan hebben,
als Mozes, de man die U had uitgekozen, niet voor hen was opgekomen.
Hij smeekte U om niet meer boos te zijn en hen niet te vernietigen.

24 Toen wilden ze uw prachtige land niet binnengaan.
Ze geloofden niet wat U hun had beloofd.
25 Ze mopperden en klaagden in hun tenten.
Ze luisterden niet naar wat U zei.
26 Toen zwoer U,
dat U hen in de woestijn zou doden
27 en dat U hun kinderen zou verjagen,
zodat ze in de landen van andere volken zouden sterven.

28 Ze sloten een verbond met de afgod Baäl-Peor
en aten van offers voor de doden.
29 Zo maakten ze U woedend.
Daarom liet U een ziekte onder hen uitbreken.
30 Maar Pinehas kwam tussenbeide.
Toen hield de ziekte op.
31 Daarom zei God
dat Hij hem en zijn hele familie ná hem daarvoor zou belonen.

32 Ze maakten U kwaad bij de bronnen van Meriba.
Door hun schuld reageerde Mozes verkeerd.
33 Want doordat zij hem kwaad maakten,
zei Mozes dingen zonder eerst na te denken.

34 Ze gehoorzaamden U niet toen U zei
dat ze de andere volken moesten vernietigen.
35 Ze lieten hen in leven en trouwden zelfs met hen.
Daardoor gingen ze dezelfde slechte dingen doen als zij.
36 Ze gingen de goden van die volken aanbidden.
Daardoor ging het helemaal verkeerd met hen.
37 Bovendien offerden ze hun zonen en hun dochters
aan de boze geesten.
38 Aan de goden van Kanaän
offerden ze het bloed van onschuldige mensen:
het bloed van hun eigen zonen en dochters.
Daardoor bedierven ze het land.
39 Ook waren ze zelf bedorven door de dingen die ze deden.
Ze waren ontrouw aan U.

40 Daarom werd U woedend op uw volk.
U walgde van hen.
41 U gaf hen in de macht van andere volken.
Hun vijanden heersten over hen.
42 Hun vijanden waren wreed voor hen.
Ze moesten veel lijden.

43 Heel vaak heeft U hen gered.
Maar steeds opnieuw waren ze U ongehoorzaam.
Ze zakten steeds dieper weg in hun eigen slechtheid.
44 Maar als U hun moeilijkheden zag,
als U hun gekreun hoorde,
45 dan dacht U weer aan het verbond dat U met hen had gesloten.
Dan had U weer medelijden met hen,
omdat U goed en liefdevol bent.
46 Daarom zorgde U ervoor
dat de mensen die hen gevangen hielden hen weer vrij lieten.

47 Heer God, red ons!
Breng ons weer terug naar ons land.
Dan zullen we U prijzen.
48 U bent de Heer, de God van Israël.
U zullen we voor eeuwig prijzen.
Zeg allemaal "Amen! Prijs de Heer!"

2 Who can utter the mighty acts of the Lord? who can shew forth all his praise?

3 Blessed are they that keep judgment, and he that doeth righteousness at all times.

4 Remember me, O Lord, with the favour that thou bearest unto thy people: O visit me with thy salvation;

5 That I may see the good of thy chosen, that I may rejoice in the gladness of thy nation, that I may glory with thine inheritance.

6 We have sinned with our fathers, we have committed iniquity, we have done wickedly.

7 Our fathers understood not thy wonders in Egypt; they remembered not the multitude of thy mercies; but provoked him at the sea, even at the Red sea.

8 Nevertheless he saved them for his name's sake, that he might make his mighty power to be known.

9 He rebuked the Red sea also, and it was dried up: so he led them through the depths, as through the wilderness.

10 And he saved them from the hand of him that hated them, and redeemed them from the hand of the enemy.

11 And the waters covered their enemies: there was not one of them left.

12 Then believed they his words; they sang his praise.

13 They soon forgat his works; they waited not for his counsel:

14 But lusted exceedingly in the wilderness, and tempted God in the desert.

15 And he gave them their request; but sent leanness into their soul.

16 They envied Moses also in the camp, and Aaron the saint of the Lord.

17 The earth opened and swallowed up Dathan and covered the company of Abiram.

18 And a fire was kindled in their company; the flame burned up the wicked.

19 They made a calf in Horeb, and worshipped the molten image.

20 Thus they changed their glory into the similitude of an ox that eateth grass.

21 They forgat God their saviour, which had done great things in Egypt;

22 Wondrous works in the land of Ham, and terrible things by the Red sea.

23 Therefore he said that he would destroy them, had not Moses his chosen stood before him in the breach, to turn away his wrath, lest he should destroy them.

24 Yea, they despised the pleasant land, they believed not his word:

25 But murmured in their tents, and hearkened not unto the voice of the Lord.

26 Therefore he lifted up his hand against them, to overthrow them in the wilderness:

27 To overthrow their seed also among the nations, and to scatter them in the lands.

28 They joined themselves also unto Baalpeor, and ate the sacrifices of the dead.

29 Thus they provoked him to anger with their inventions: and the plague brake in upon them.

30 Then stood up Phinehas, and executed judgment: and so the plague was stayed.

31 And that was counted unto him for righteousness unto all generations for evermore.

32 They angered him also at the waters of strife, so that it went ill with Moses for their sakes:

33 Because they provoked his spirit, so that he spake unadvisedly with his lips.

34 They did not destroy the nations, concerning whom the Lord commanded them:

35 But were mingled among the heathen, and learned their works.

36 And they served their idols: which were a snare unto them.

37 Yea, they sacrificed their sons and their daughters unto devils,

38 And shed innocent blood, even the blood of their sons and of their daughters, whom they sacrificed unto the idols of Canaan: and the land was polluted with blood.

39 Thus were they defiled with their own works, and went a whoring with their own inventions.

40 Therefore was the wrath of the Lord kindled against his people, insomuch that he abhorred his own inheritance.

41 And he gave them into the hand of the heathen; and they that hated them ruled over them.

42 Their enemies also oppressed them, and they were brought into subjection under their hand.

43 Many times did he deliver them; but they provoked him with their counsel, and were brought low for their iniquity.

44 Nevertheless he regarded their affliction, when he heard their cry:

45 And he remembered for them his covenant, and repented according to the multitude of his mercies.

46 He made them also to be pitied of all those that carried them captives.

47 Save us, O Lord our God, and gather us from among the heathen, to give thanks unto thy holy name, and to triumph in thy praise.

48 Blessed be the Lord God of Israel from everlasting to everlasting: and let all the people say, Amen. Praise ye the Lord.

106 (A)Praise the Lord!
Give thanks to the Lord, because he is good;
    his love is eternal.
2 Who can tell all the great things he has done?
    Who can praise him enough?
3 Happy are those who obey his commands,
    who always do what is right.

4 Remember me, Lord, when you help your people;
    include me when you save them.
5 Let me see the prosperity of your people
    and share in the happiness of your nation,
    in the glad pride of those who belong to you.

6 We have sinned as our ancestors did;
    we have been wicked and evil.
7 (B)Our ancestors in Egypt did not understand God's wonderful acts;
    they forgot the many times he showed them his love,
    and they rebelled against the Almighty[a] at the Red Sea.
8 But he saved them, as he had promised,
    in order to show his great power.
9 (C)He gave a command to the Red Sea,
    and it dried up;
    he led his people across on dry land.
10 He saved them from those who hated them;
    he rescued them from their enemies.
11 But the water drowned their enemies;
    not one of them was left.
12 (D)Then his people believed his promises
    and sang praises to him.

13 But they quickly forgot what he had done
    and acted without waiting for his advice.
14 (E)They were filled with craving in the desert
    and put God to the test;
15 so he gave them what they asked for,
    but also sent a terrible disease among them.

16 (F)There in the desert they were jealous of Moses
    and of Aaron, the Lord's holy servant.
17 Then the earth opened up and swallowed Dathan
    and buried Abiram and his family;
18 fire came down on their followers
    and burned up those wicked people.

19 (G)They made a gold bull-calf at Sinai
    and worshiped that idol;
20 they exchanged the glory of God
    for the image of an animal that eats grass.
21 They forgot the God who had saved them
    by his mighty acts in Egypt.
22 What wonderful things he did there!
    What amazing things at the Red Sea!
23 When God said that he would destroy his people,
    his chosen servant, Moses, stood up against God
    and kept his anger from destroying them.

24 (H)Then they rejected the pleasant land,
    because they did not believe God's promise.
25 They stayed in their tents and grumbled
    and would not listen to the Lord.
26 So he have them a solemn warning
    that he would make them die in the desert
27 (I)and scatter their descendants among the heathen,
    letting them die in foreign countries.

28 (J)Then at Peor, God's people joined in the worship of Baal
    and ate sacrifices offered to dead gods.
29 They stirred up the Lord's anger by their actions,
    and a terrible disease broke out among them.
30 But Phinehas stood up and punished the guilty,
    and the plague was stopped.
31 This has been remembered in his favor ever since
    and will be for all time to come.

32 (K)At the springs of Meribah the people made the Lord angry,
    and Moses was in trouble on their account.
33 They made him so bitter
    that he spoke without stopping to think.

34 (L)They did not kill the heathen,
    as the Lord had commanded them to do,
35 but they intermarried with them
    and adopted their pagan ways.
36 God's people worshiped idols,
    and this caused their destruction.
37 (M)They offered their own sons and daughters
    as sacrifices to the idols of Canaan.
38 (N)They killed those innocent children,
    and the land was defiled by those murders.
39 They made themselves impure by their actions
    and were unfaithful to God.

40 (O)So the Lord was angry with his people;
    he was disgusted with them.
41 He abandoned them to the power of the heathen,
    and their enemies ruled over them.
42 They were oppressed by their enemies
    and were in complete subjection to them.
43 Many times the Lord rescued his people,
    but they chose to rebel against him
    and sank deeper into sin.
44 Yet the Lord heard them when they cried out,
    and he took notice of their distress.
45 For their sake he remembered his covenant,
    and because of his great love he relented.
46 He made all their oppressors
    feel sorry for them.

47 (P)Save us, O Lord our God,
    and bring us back from among the nations,
so that we may be thankful
    and praise your holy name.

48 Praise the Lord, the God of Israel;
    praise him now and forever!
    Let everyone say, “Amen!”

Praise the Lord!
