Psalm 40
New Revised Standard Version Updated Edition
Psalm 40
Thanksgiving for Deliverance and Prayer for Help
To the leader. Of David. A Psalm.
1 I waited patiently for the Lord;
he inclined to me and heard my cry.(A)
2 He drew me up from the desolate pit,[a]
out of the miry bog,
and set my feet upon a rock,
making my steps secure.(B)
3 He put a new song in my mouth,
a song of praise to our God.
Many will see and fear
and put their trust in the Lord.(C)
4 Happy are those who make
the Lord their trust,
who do not turn to the proud,
to those who go astray after false gods.(D)
5 You have multiplied, O Lord my God,
your wondrous deeds and your thoughts toward us;
none can compare with you.
Were I to proclaim and tell of them,
they would be more than can be counted.(E)
6 Sacrifice and offering you do not desire,
but you have given me an open ear.[b]
Burnt offering and sin offering
you have not required.(F)
7 Then I said, “Here I am;
in the scroll of the book it is written of me.[c]
8 I delight to do your will, O my God;
your law is within my heart.”(G)
9 I have told the glad news of deliverance
in the great congregation;
see, I have not restrained my lips,
as you know, O Lord.(H)
10 I have not hidden your saving help within my heart;
I have spoken of your faithfulness and your salvation;
I have not concealed your steadfast love and your faithfulness
from the great congregation.(I)
11 Do not, O Lord, withhold
your mercy from me;
let your steadfast love and your faithfulness
keep me safe forever.(J)
12 For evils have encompassed me
without number;
my iniquities have overtaken me
until I cannot see;
they are more than the hairs of my head,
and my heart fails me.(K)
13 Be pleased, O Lord, to deliver me;
O Lord, make haste to help me.(L)
14 Let all those be put to shame and confusion
who seek to snatch away my life;
let those be turned back and brought to dishonor
who desire my hurt.(M)
15 Let those be appalled because of their shame
who say to me, “Aha, Aha!”(N)

Psalm 11
Song of Trust in God
To the leader. Of David.
1 In the Lord I take refuge; how can you say to me,
“Flee like a bird to the mountains,[a](A)
2 for look, the wicked bend the bow,
they have fitted their arrow to the string,
to shoot in the dark at the upright in heart.(B)
3 If the foundations are destroyed,
what can the righteous do?”(C)
4 The Lord is in his holy temple;
the Lord’s throne is in heaven.
His eyes behold; his gaze examines humankind.(D)
5 The Lord tests the righteous and the wicked,
and his soul hates the lover of violence.(E)
6 On the wicked he will rain coals of fire and sulfur;
a scorching wind shall be the portion of their cup.(F)
7 For the Lord is righteous;
he loves righteous deeds;
the upright shall behold his face.(G)
Psalm 12
Plea for Help in Evil Times
To the leader: according to The Sheminith. A Psalm of David.
1 Help, O Lord, for there is no longer anyone who is godly;
the faithful have disappeared from humankind.(H)
2 They utter lies to each other;
with flattering lips and a deceitful heart they speak.(I)
3 May the Lord cut off all flattering lips,
the tongue that makes great boasts,(J)
4 those who say, “With our tongues we will prevail;
our lips are our own—who is our master?”
5 “Because the poor are despoiled, because the needy groan,
I will now rise up,” says the Lord;
“I will place them in the safety for which they long.”(K)
6 The promises of the Lord are promises that are pure,
silver refined in a furnace on the ground,
purified seven times.(L)
7 You, O Lord, will protect us;
you will guard us from this generation forever.(M)
8 On every side the wicked prowl,
as vileness is exalted among humankind.(N)
Psalm 13
Prayer for Deliverance from Enemies
To the leader. A Psalm of David.
1 How long, O Lord? Will you forget me forever?
How long will you hide your face from me?(O)
2 How long must I bear pain[b] in my soul
and have sorrow in my heart all day long?
How long shall my enemy be exalted over me?(P)
3 Consider and answer me, O Lord my God!
Give light to my eyes, or I will sleep the sleep of death,(Q)
4 and my enemy will say, “I have prevailed”;
my foes will rejoice because I am shaken.(R)
5 But I trusted in your steadfast love;
my heart shall rejoice in your salvation.(S)
6 I will sing to the Lord
because he has dealt bountifully with me.(T)
Psalm 14
Denunciation of Godlessness
To the leader. Of David.
1 Fools say in their hearts, “There is no God.”
They are corrupt; they do abominable deeds;
there is no one who does good.(U)
2 The Lord looks down from heaven on humankind
to see if there are any who are wise,
who seek after God.(V)
3 They have all gone astray; they are all alike perverse;
there is no one who does good,
no, not one.(W)
4 Have they no knowledge, all the evildoers
who eat up my people as they eat bread
and do not call upon the Lord?(X)
5 There they shall be in great terror,
for God is with the company of the righteous.(Y)
6 You would confound the plans of the poor,
but the Lord is their refuge.(Z)
7 O that deliverance for Israel would come from Zion!
When the Lord restores the fortunes of his people,
Jacob will rejoice; Israel will be glad.(AA)
Psalm 15
Who Shall Abide in God’s Sanctuary?
A Psalm of David.
1 O Lord, who may abide in your tent?
Who may dwell on your holy hill?(AB)
2 Those who walk blamelessly and do what is right
and speak the truth from their heart;(AC)
3 who do not slander with their tongue
and do no evil to their friends
nor heap shame upon their neighbors;(AD)
4 in whose eyes the wicked are despised
but who honor those who fear the Lord;
who stand by their oath even to their hurt;(AE)
5 who do not lend money at interest
and do not take a bribe against the innocent.
Those who do these things shall never be moved.(AF)
Psalm 16
Song of Trust and Security in God
A Miktam of David.
1 Protect me, O God, for in you I take refuge.(AG)
2 I say to the Lord, “You are my Lord;
I have no good apart from you.”[c]
3 As for the holy ones in the land, they are the noble ones
in whom is all my delight.(AH)
4 Those who choose another god multiply their sorrows;[d]
their drink offerings of blood I will not pour out
or take their names upon my lips.(AI)
5 The Lord is my chosen portion and my cup;
you hold my lot.(AJ)
6 The boundary lines have fallen for me in pleasant places;
I have a goodly heritage.(AK)
7 I bless the Lord, who gives me counsel;
in the night also my heart instructs me.(AL)
8 I keep the Lord always before me;
because he is at my right hand, I shall not be moved.(AM)
9 Therefore my heart is glad, and my soul rejoices;
my body also rests secure.(AN)
10 For you do not give me up to Sheol
or let your faithful one see the Pit.(AO)
11 You show me the path of life.
In your presence there is fullness of joy;
in your right hand are pleasures forevermore.(AP)
Psalm 17
Prayer for Deliverance from Persecutors
A Prayer of David.
1 Hear a just cause, O Lord; attend to my cry;
give ear to my prayer from lips free of deceit.
2 From you let my vindication come;
let your eyes see the right.
3 If you try my heart, if you visit me by night,
if you test me, you will find no wickedness in me;
my mouth does not transgress.(AQ)
4 As for what others do, by the word of your lips
I have avoided the ways of the violent.(AR)
5 My steps have held fast to your paths;
my feet have not slipped.(AS)
6 I call upon you, for you will answer me, O God;
incline your ear to me; hear my words.(AT)
7 Wondrously show your steadfast love,
O savior of those who seek refuge
from their adversaries at your right hand.(AU)
8 Guard me as the apple of the eye;
hide me in the shadow of your wings,(AV)
9 from the wicked who despoil me,
my deadly enemies who surround me.
10 They close their hearts to pity;
with their mouths they speak arrogantly.(AW)
11 They flush me out;[e] now they surround me;
they set their eyes to cast me to the ground.
12 They are like a lion eager to tear,
like a young lion lurking in ambush.(AX)
13 Rise up, O Lord, confront them, overthrow them!
By your sword deliver my life from the wicked,(AY)
14 from mortals—by your hand, O Lord—
from mortals whose portion in life is in this world.
May their bellies be filled with what you have stored up for them;
may their children have more than enough;
may they leave something over to their little ones.(AZ)
15 As for me, I shall behold your face in righteousness;
when I awake I shall be satisfied, beholding your likeness.(BA)
Psalm 18
Royal Thanksgiving for Victory
To the leader. A Psalm of David the servant of the Lord, who addressed the words of this song to the Lord on the day when the Lord delivered him from the hand of all his enemies and from the hand of Saul. He said:
1 I love you, O Lord, my strength.
2 The Lord is my rock, my fortress, and my deliverer,
my God, my rock in whom I take refuge,
my shield, and the horn of my salvation, my stronghold.(BB)
3 I call upon the Lord, who is worthy to be praised,
so I shall be saved from my enemies.(BC)
4 The cords of death encompassed me;
the torrents of perdition assailed me;(BD)
5 the cords of Sheol entangled me;
the snares of death confronted me.(BE)
6 In my distress I called upon the Lord;
to my God I cried for help.
From his temple he heard my voice,
and my cry to him reached his ears.(BF)
7 Then the earth reeled and rocked;
the foundations also of the mountains trembled
and reeled because he was angry.(BG)
8 Smoke went up from his nostrils
and devouring fire from his mouth;
glowing coals flamed forth from him.
9 He bowed the heavens and came down;
thick darkness was under his feet.(BH)
10 He rode on a cherub and flew;
he came swiftly upon the wings of the wind.(BI)
11 He made darkness his covering around him,
his canopy thick clouds dark with water.(BJ)
12 Out of the brightness before him
there broke through his clouds
hailstones and coals of fire.(BK)
13 The Lord also thundered in the heavens,
and the Most High uttered his voice.[f](BL)
14 And he sent out his arrows and scattered them;
he flashed forth lightnings and routed them.(BM)
15 Then the channels of the sea were seen,
and the foundations of the world were laid bare
at your rebuke, O Lord,
at the blast of the breath of your nostrils.(BN)
16 He reached down from on high; he took me;
he drew me out of mighty waters.(BO)
17 He delivered me from my strong enemy
and from those who hated me,
for they were too mighty for me.(BP)
18 They confronted me in the day of my calamity,
but the Lord was my support.
19 He brought me out into a broad place;
he delivered me because he delighted in me.(BQ)
20 The Lord rewarded me according to my righteousness;
according to the cleanness of my hands he recompensed me.(BR)
21 For I have kept the ways of the Lord
and have not wickedly departed from my God.(BS)
22 For all his ordinances were before me,
and his statutes I did not put away from me.(BT)
23 I was blameless before him,
and I kept myself from guilt.
24 Therefore the Lord has recompensed me according to my righteousness,
according to the cleanness of my hands in his sight.(BU)
25 With the loyal you show yourself loyal;
with the blameless you show yourself blameless;(BV)
26 with the pure you show yourself pure;
and with the crooked you show yourself shrewd.(BW)
27 For you deliver a humble people,
but the haughty eyes you bring down.(BX)
28 It is you who light my lamp;
the Lord, my God, lights up my darkness.(BY)
29 By you I can outrun a troop,
and by my God I can leap over a wall.(BZ)
30 This God—his way is perfect;
the promise of the Lord proves true;
he is a shield for all who take refuge in him.(CA)
31 For who is God except the Lord?
And who is a rock besides our God?(CB)
32 The God who has girded me with strength
and made my way safe.[g]
33 He made my feet like the feet of a deer
and set me secure on the heights.(CC)
34 He trains my hands for war,
so that my arms can bend a bow of bronze.(CD)
35 You have given me the shield of your salvation,
and your right hand has supported me;
your help[h] has made me great.
36 You gave me a wide place for my steps under me,
and my feet did not slip.
37 I pursued my enemies and overtook them
and did not turn back until they were consumed.(CE)
38 I struck them down so that they were unable to rise;
they fell under my feet.(CF)
39 For you girded me with strength for the battle;
you made my assailants sink under me.(CG)
40 You made my enemies turn their backs to me,
and those who hated me I destroyed.(CH)
41 They cried for help, but there was no one to save them;
they cried to the Lord, but he did not answer them.(CI)
42 I beat them fine, like dust before the wind;
I cast them out like the mire of the streets.(CJ)
43 You delivered me from strife with the peoples;[i]
you made me head of the nations;
people whom I had not known served me.(CK)
44 As soon as they heard of me, they obeyed me;
foreigners came cringing to me.
45 Foreigners lost heart
and came trembling out of their strongholds.(CL)
46 The Lord lives! Blessed be my rock,
and exalted be the God of my salvation,(CM)
47 the God who gave me vengeance
and subdued peoples under me,(CN)
48 who delivered me from my enemies;
indeed, you exalted me above my adversaries;
you delivered me from the violent.(CO)
49 For this I will extol you, O Lord, among the nations
and sing praises to your name.(CP)
50 Great triumphs he gives to his king
and shows steadfast love to his anointed,
to David and his descendants forever.(CQ)
Psalm 19
God’s Glory in Creation and the Law
To the leader. A Psalm of David.
1 The heavens are telling the glory of God,
and the firmament[j] proclaims his handiwork.(CR)
2 Day to day pours forth speech,
and night to night declares knowledge.(CS)
3 There is no speech, nor are there words;
their voice is not heard;
4 yet their voice[k] goes out through all the earth
and their words to the end of the world.
In the heavens[l] he has set a tent for the sun,(CT)
5 which comes out like a bridegroom from his wedding canopy,
and like a strong man runs its course with joy.(CU)
6 Its rising is from the end of the heavens
and its circuit to the end of them,
and nothing is hid from its heat.(CV)
7 The law of the Lord is perfect,
reviving the soul;
the decrees of the Lord are sure,
making wise the simple;(CW)
8 the precepts of the Lord are right,
rejoicing the heart;
the commandment of the Lord is clear,
enlightening the eyes;(CX)
9 the fear of the Lord is pure,
enduring forever;
the ordinances of the Lord are true
and righteous altogether.(CY)
10 More to be desired are they than gold,
even much fine gold;
sweeter also than honey
and drippings of the honeycomb.(CZ)
11 Moreover, by them is your servant warned;
in keeping them there is great reward.(DA)
12 But who can detect one’s own errors?
Clear me from hidden faults.(DB)
13 Keep back your servant also from the insolent;[m]
do not let them have dominion over me.
Then I shall be blameless
and innocent of great transgression.(DC)
14 Let the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart
be acceptable to you,
O Lord, my rock and my redeemer.(DD)

5 May we shout for joy over your victory
and in the name of our God set up our banners.
May the Lord fulfill all your petitions.(DI)
6 Now I know that the Lord will help his anointed;
he will answer him from his holy heaven
with mighty victories by his right hand.(DJ)
7 Some take pride in chariots and some in horses,
but our pride is in the name of the Lord our God.(DK)
8 They will collapse and fall,
but we shall rise and stand upright.(DL)
9 Give victory to the king, O Lord;
answer us when we call.[n]

and have not withheld the request of his lips. Selah(DN)
3 For you meet him with rich blessings;
you set a crown of fine gold on his head.(DO)
4 He asked you for life; you gave it to him—
length of days forever and ever.(DP)
5 His glory is great through your help;
splendor and majesty you bestow on him.(DQ)
6 You bestow on him blessings forever;
you make him glad with the joy of your presence.
7 For the king trusts in the Lord,

8 Your hand will find out all your enemies;
your right hand will find out those who hate you.(DS)
9 You will make them like a fiery furnace
when you appear.
The Lord will swallow them up in his wrath,
and fire will consume them.(DT)
10 You will destroy their offspring from the earth
and their children from among humankind.(DU)
11 If they plan evil against you,
if they devise mischief, they will not succeed.(DV)
12 For you will put them to flight;
you will aim at their faces with your bows.(DW)
13 Be exalted, O Lord, in your strength!
We will sing and praise your power.(DX)
Psalm 22
Plea for Deliverance from Suffering and Hostility
To the leader: according to The Deer of the Dawn. A Psalm of David.
1 My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?
Why are you so far from helping me, from the words of my groaning?(DY)
2 O my God, I cry by day, but you do not answer;
and by night but find no rest.(DZ)
3 Yet you are holy,
enthroned on the praises of Israel.(EA)
4 In you our ancestors trusted;
they trusted, and you delivered them.
5 To you they cried and were saved;
in you they trusted and were not put to shame.(EB)
6 But I am a worm and not human,
scorned by others and despised by the people.(EC)
7 All who see me mock me;
they sneer at me; they shake their heads;(ED)
8 “Commit your cause to the Lord; let him deliver—
let him rescue the one in whom he delights!”(EE)
9 Yet it was you who took me from the womb;
you kept me safe on my mother’s breast.(EF)
10 On you I was cast from my birth,
and since my mother bore me you have been my God.(EG)
11 Do not be far from me,
for trouble is near,
and there is no one to help.
12 Many bulls encircle me;
strong bulls of Bashan surround me;(EH)
13 they open wide their mouths at me,
like a ravening and roaring lion.(EI)
14 I am poured out like water,
and all my bones are out of joint;
my heart is like wax;
it is melted within my breast;(EJ)
15 my mouth[o] is dried up like a potsherd,
and my tongue sticks to my jaws;
you lay me in the dust of death.(EK)
16 For dogs are all around me;
a company of evildoers encircles me;
they bound my hands and feet.[p](EL)
17 I can count all my bones.
They stare and gloat over me;
18 they divide my clothes among themselves,
and for my clothing they cast lots.(EM)
19 But you, O Lord, do not be far away!
O my help, come quickly to my aid!
20 Deliver my soul from the sword,
my life[q] from the power of the dog!(EN)
21 Save me from the mouth of the lion!
From the horns of the wild oxen you have rescued[r] me.(EO)
22 I will tell of your name to my brothers and sisters;[s]
in the midst of the congregation I will praise you:(EP)
23 You who fear the Lord, praise him!
All you offspring of Jacob, glorify him;
stand in awe of him, all you offspring of Israel!(EQ)
24 For he did not despise or abhor
the affliction of the afflicted;
he did not hide his face from me[t]
but heard when I[u] cried to him.(ER)
25 From you comes my praise in the great congregation;
my vows I will pay before those who fear him.(ES)
26 The poor[v] shall eat and be satisfied;
those who seek him shall praise the Lord.
May your hearts live forever!(ET)
27 All the ends of the earth shall remember
and turn to the Lord,
and all the families of the nations
shall worship before him.[w](EU)
28 For dominion belongs to the Lord,
and he rules over the nations.(EV)
29 To him,[x] indeed, shall all who sleep in[y] the earth bow down;
before him shall bow all who go down to the dust,
and I shall live for him.[z](EW)
30 Posterity will serve him;
future generations will be told about the Lord(EX)
31 and[aa] proclaim his deliverance to a people yet unborn,
saying that he has done it.(EY)
