Proverbs 11

11 A false balance is an abomination to the Lord,
but a just weight is his delight.
2 When pride comes, then comes disgrace;
but with the humble is wisdom.
3 The integrity of the upright guides them,
but the crookedness of the treacherous destroys them.
4 Riches do not profit in the day of wrath,
but righteousness delivers from death.
5 The righteousness of the blameless keeps his way straight,
but the wicked falls by his own wickedness.
6 The righteousness of the upright delivers them,
but the treacherous are taken captive by their lust.
7 When the wicked dies, his hope perishes,
and the expectation of the godless comes to nought.
8 The righteous is delivered from trouble,
and the wicked gets into it instead.
9 With his mouth the godless man would destroy his neighbor,
but by knowledge the righteous are delivered.
10 When it goes well with the righteous, the city rejoices;
and when the wicked perish there are shouts of gladness.
11 By the blessing of the upright a city is exalted,
but it is overthrown by the mouth of the wicked.
12 He who belittles his neighbor lacks sense,
but a man of understanding remains silent.
13 He who goes about as a talebearer reveals secrets,
but he who is trustworthy in spirit keeps a thing hidden.
14 Where there is no guidance, a people falls;
but in an abundance of counselors there is safety.
15 He who gives surety for a stranger will smart for it,
but he who hates suretyship is secure.
16 A gracious woman gets honor,
and violent men get riches.
17 A man who is kind benefits himself,
but a cruel man hurts himself.
18 A wicked man earns deceptive wages,
but one who sows righteousness gets a sure reward.
19 He who is steadfast in righteousness will live,
but he who pursues evil will die.
20 Men of perverse mind are an abomination to the Lord,
but those of blameless ways are his delight.
21 Be assured, an evil man will not go unpunished,
but those who are righteous will be delivered.
22 Like a gold ring in a swine’s snout
is a beautiful woman without discretion.
23 The desire of the righteous ends only in good;
the expectation of the wicked in wrath.
24 One man gives freely, yet grows all the richer;
another withholds what he should give, and only suffers want.
25 A liberal man will be enriched,
and one who waters will himself be watered.
26 The people curse him who holds back grain,
but a blessing is on the head of him who sells it.
27 He who diligently seeks good seeks favor,
but evil comes to him who searches for it.
28 He who trusts in his riches will wither,[a]
but the righteous will flourish like a green leaf.
29 He who troubles his household will inherit wind,
and the fool will be servant to the wise.
30 The fruit of the righteous is a tree of life,
but lawlessness[b] takes away lives.
31 If the righteous is requited on earth,
how much more the wicked and the sinner!

3 Người nhân đức dùng tính lương thiện hướng dẫn mình;
còn tính bất lương sẽ tiêu diệt kẻ bất trung.
4 Đến giờ qua đời thì giàu có chẳng ích gì,
còn sống phải lẽ sẽ giúp con trong kỳ tai hoạ.
5 Sự công chính của người ngay thẳng khiến đời sống người dễ chịu,
nhưng kẻ ác sẽ bị diệt trong mưu ác mình.
6 Lòng thanh liêm của người chính trực giải thoát người ấy,
nhưng kẻ bất trung sẽ bị mắc kẹt trong ước vọng của chúng.
7 Khi kẻ ác chết, hi vọng chúng cũng chết theo;
hi vọng giàu sang của chúng cũng tan theo mây khói [a].
8 Người lành thoát khỏi mọi khó khăn;
nhưng khó khăn đó lại rơi trên đầu kẻ ác.
9 Lời nói kẻ ác làm hại người láng giềng,
nhưng người nhân đức nhờ hiểu biết mà thoát hiểm.
10 Khi người nhân đức thành công, cả thành đều hớn hở.
Nhưng khi kẻ ác bị tiêu diệt thì mọi người reo vui.
11 Sự thịnh vượng của người nhân đức nâng đỡ thành mình,
còn kẻ ác dùng miệng lưỡi mình phá sập nó.
12 Người ngu dại khinh dể láng giềng mình [b],
còn người hiểu biết im lặng.
13 Kẻ bép xép không thể giữ điều kín giấu,
còn người đáng tin không tiết lộ điều bí mật.
14 Quốc gia suy sụp vì thiếu lãnh đạo,
còn nhiều cố vấn cứu được dân tộc.
15 Ai bảo lãnh người lạ [c] sẽ phải chịu thiệt.
Cho nên tốt hơn đừng bảo lãnh.
16 Người đàn bà duyên dáng được kính nể,
còn đàn ông hung dữ chỉ được của cải.
17 Kẻ nhân từ làm ơn cho chính mình,
còn kẻ hung bạo chỉ mang khổ vào thân.
18 Công việc của kẻ ác chỉ là dối trá,
còn người nhân đức chắc chắn sẽ được thưởng [d].
19 Người nhân đức sẽ được sống,
nhưng kẻ theo đuổi điều ác sẽ chết.
20 Chúa ghét những kẻ có lòng gian ác,
nhưng Ngài thích kẻ ngay thẳng.
21 Kẻ ác chắc chắn sẽ bị phạt,
còn ai làm điều phải sẽ được giải phóng.
22 Người đàn bà đẹp mà thiếu khôn khéo,
như vòng vàng đeo vào mũi heo.
23 Hi vọng của người chân chính sẽ mang kết quả,
còn hi vọng của kẻ ác sẽ đưa đến cơn thịnh nộ của Thượng Đế.
24 Có người cho ra nhiều nhưng lại thêm giàu có.
Còn có kẻ keo kiệt, bủn xỉn thì lại nghèo thiếu.
25 Ai ban phát cho người khác sẽ trở nên sung túc hơn;
còn ai giúp người sẽ được người giúp lại.
26 Dân chúng nguyền rủa kẻ tích trữ lúa thóc,
nhưng chúc phước cho kẻ bán lúa ra.
27 Người nào tìm điều tốt lành sẽ nhận được ân phúc,
còn kẻ tìm điều ác sẽ gặp điều ác.
28 Ai trông cậy vào của cải sẽ bị tàn hại,
còn người nhân đức sẽ tươi tốt như lá cây xanh.
29 Ai mang hiềm khích cho gia đình,
sẽ chẳng nhận được gì ngoài gió lốc.
Người ngu dại sẽ làm tôi cho kẻ khôn ngoan.
30 Người nhân đức ban sự sống cho kẻ khác,
nhưng sự hung bạo giết sinh mạng [e].
31 Người nhân đức được phần thưởng trên thế gian,
còn kẻ ác và tội nhân bị trừng phạt.

11 A false balance is abomination to the Lord: but a just weight is his delight.
2 When pride cometh, then cometh shame: but with the lowly is wisdom.
3 The integrity of the upright shall guide them: but the perverseness of transgressors shall destroy them.
4 Riches profit not in the day of wrath: but righteousness delivereth from death.
5 The righteousness of the perfect shall direct his way: but the wicked shall fall by his own wickedness.
6 The righteousness of the upright shall deliver them: but transgressors shall be taken in their own naughtiness.
7 When a wicked man dieth, his expectation shall perish: and the hope of unjust men perisheth.
8 The righteous is delivered out of trouble, and the wicked cometh in his stead.
9 An hypocrite with his mouth destroyeth his neighbour: but through knowledge shall the just be delivered.
10 When it goeth well with the righteous, the city rejoiceth: and when the wicked perish, there is shouting.
11 By the blessing of the upright the city is exalted: but it is overthrown by the mouth of the wicked.
12 He that is void of wisdom despiseth his neighbour: but a man of understanding holdeth his peace.
13 A talebearer revealeth secrets: but he that is of a faithful spirit concealeth the matter.
14 Where no counsel is, the people fall: but in the multitude of counsellors there is safety.
15 He that is surety for a stranger shall smart for it: and he that hateth suretiship is sure.
16 A gracious woman retaineth honour: and strong men retain riches.
17 The merciful man doeth good to his own soul: but he that is cruel troubleth his own flesh.
18 The wicked worketh a deceitful work: but to him that soweth righteousness shall be a sure reward.
19 As righteousness tendeth to life: so he that pursueth evil pursueth it to his own death.
20 They that are of a froward heart are abomination to the Lord: but such as are upright in their way are his delight.
21 Though hand join in hand, the wicked shall not be unpunished: but the seed of the righteous shall be delivered.
22 As a jewel of gold in a swine's snout, so is a fair woman which is without discretion.
23 The desire of the righteous is only good: but the expectation of the wicked is wrath.
24 There is that scattereth, and yet increaseth; and there is that withholdeth more than is meet, but it tendeth to poverty.
25 The liberal soul shall be made fat: and he that watereth shall be watered also himself.
26 He that withholdeth corn, the people shall curse him: but blessing shall be upon the head of him that selleth it.
27 He that diligently seeketh good procureth favour: but he that seeketh mischief, it shall come unto him.
28 He that trusteth in his riches shall fall; but the righteous shall flourish as a branch.
29 He that troubleth his own house shall inherit the wind: and the fool shall be servant to the wise of heart.
30 The fruit of the righteous is a tree of life; and he that winneth souls is wise.
31 Behold, the righteous shall be recompensed in the earth: much more the wicked and the sinner.

The Value of Righteousness
11 The Lord hates false scales,
but he delights in accurate weights.
2 When pride appears, disgrace accompanies it,
but humility is present with wisdom.
3 The integrity of the righteous guides them,
but the hypocrisy of the treacherous destroys them.
4 Wealth won’t help in the time of judgment,[a]
but righteousness will deliver from death.
5 The righteousness of the innocent creates a level path,
but the wicked fall by their wickedness.
6 The righteousness of the upright delivers them,
but the treacherous are trapped by their evil desires.
7 When a wicked person dies, his hope vanishes;[b]
and what he[c] expected from his scheming comes to nothing.
8 The righteous person is delivered from trouble;
it comes upon the wicked instead.
9 By what he says, the godless person can destroy his neighbor,
but through knowledge the righteous escape.
10 The city rejoices when the righteous prosper,
and when the wicked perish there is jubilation.
11 Through the blessing of the righteous a city is built up,
but what the wicked say tears it down.
12 Whoever belittles his neighbor lacks sense,
but the discerning man controls his comments.
13 Whoever spreads gossip betrays secrets,
but the trustworthy person[d] keeps a confidence.
14 A nation falls through a lack of guidance,
but victory comes through the counsel of many.[e]
15 Securing a loan for a stranger will bring suffering,
but by refusing to do so, one remains safe.
16 A gracious woman attains honor,[f]
but[g] ruthless men attain[h] wealth.
17 A gracious man benefits himself,
but the cruel person damages himself.
18 Evil people earn deceptive wages,
but those who plant righteousness are truly rewarded.
19 Genuine righteousness leads to life,
but whoever pursues evil will die.
20 Devious minds are abhorrent to the Lord,
but those whose ways are innocent are his delight.
21 Be sure of this:[i] the wicked will not go unpunished,
but the descendants of the righteous will go free.
22 Like a gold ring in a pig’s snout
is a beautiful woman without discretion.
23 The desire of the righteous is to seek good,
but the hope of the wicked results in wrath.
24 Those who give freely gain even more;
others hold back what they owe, becoming even poorer.
25 A generous person will prosper,
and anyone who gives water will receive a flood in return.
26 People will curse whoever withholds grain,
but blessing will come to whoever is selling.
27 The person seeking good will find favor,
but anyone who searches for evil—it will find him!
28 The person who trusts in his wealth will fall,
but the righteous will flourish like green leaves.
29 Whoever troubles his household will inherit the wind,
and the fool will be a servant to the wise.
30 The fruit of the righteous is[j] a tree of life,
and the one who wins people is wise.[k]
31 If the righteous receive what they are due here on earth,
how much more will the wicked and the sinner.
