Wijsheid helpt je niet tegen de dood
8 Wie is wijs? Wie kan alles begrijpen? Als iemand wijs is, verandert dat zijn gezicht: het wordt vriendelijker.
2 Wees gehoorzaam aan de bevelen van de koning, omdat je aan God gezworen hebt dat je dat zal doen. 3 Wees niet bang voor hem, maar ga ook niet tegen hem in. Want de koning doet wat hij zelf wil. 4 Wat hij zegt, gebeurt. Wie zal hem vragen: "Wat doet u daar?" 5 Mensen die doen wat de koning beveelt, komen niet in moeilijkheden. Wijze mensen weten wat ze wanneer moeten doen. 6 Want alle dingen hebben hun eigen tijd. Want een mens overkomt veel ellende die hem door andere mensen wordt aangedaan. 7 Hij weet niet wat er in de toekomst gebeuren zal. Niemand kan hem dat vertellen. 8 Geen mens heeft macht over de wind. Niemand kan hem laten ophouden met waaien. En niemand heeft macht over de dood. Niemand kan hem tegenhouden wanneer hij komt. De strijd is al bij voorbaat verloren. Ook slechte mensen ontkomen niet.
Wijsheid helpt je niet om het leven te begrijpen
9 Dit heb ik allemaal gezien toen ik onderzocht wat er allemaal gebeurt onder de zon. Ik zag dat de ene mens macht heeft over de andere mens. En dat hij die macht misbruikt om die ander kwaad te doen.
10 Ook zag ik hoe slechte mensen een mooie begrafenis kregen. Maar dat goede mensen die eerlijk geleefd hadden, niet begraven werden. Ze werden door de bewoners van hun stad vergeten. Ook dat is maar lucht en iets onbegrijpelijks. 11 Slechte mensen worden niet onmiddellijk gestraft. Daarom denken de mensen dat ze ongestraft slechte dingen kunnen doen. 12 Want een slecht mens die honderd misdaden doet, blijft toch lang leven. Toch weet ik dat het goed zal gaan met de mensen die leven zoals God het wil, omdat ze ontzag voor God hebben. 13 Maar met de mensen die zich niets van God aantrekken, zal het uiteindelijk slecht aflopen. Hun leven zal niet lang worden zoals een schaduw lang wordt in de avondzon, omdat ze geen ontzag voor God hebben.
14 Ik heb op aarde nóg iets gezien wat maar lucht is, iets onbegrijpelijks: dat er goede mensen zijn met wie het net zo slecht afloopt als met slechte mensen. En dat er slechte mensen zijn met wie het zo goed gaat alsof ze goede mensen zijn. Ik vind dat dat lucht is, iets onbegrijpelijks. 15 Daarom denk ik dat je maar beter vrolijk kunt zijn. Er is onder de zon niets beters voor een mens dan te eten en te drinken en van het leven te genieten. Dat is het enige wat hij heeft bij al zijn gezwoeg in de tijd die God hem geeft onder de zon.
16 Ik was vast van plan geweest om wijs te worden. Ik wilde begrijpen wat de mensen allemaal doen. En waarom sommige mensen dag en nacht geen rust hebben. 17 Maar ik heb ontdekt dat de mens niets kan begrijpen van de dingen die God doet onder de zon. Hoe goed een mens ook zoekt, hij kan het niet begrijpen. Een wijs mens kan denken dat hij het begrijpt, maar toch is dat niet waar.

Het Boek
Gehoorzaamheid aan God gaat boven alles
8 Wat is het heerlijk wijs te zijn, dingen te begrijpen, te bestuderen en te kunnen uitleggen! Wijsheid legt een glans over het gezicht van een mens en verzacht zijn hardheid. 2 Gehoorzaam de koning zoals u hebt gezworen te doen. 3 Probeer niet onder uw plichten uit te komen en verzet u niet tegen hem, want wat de koning wil, gebeurt toch wel. 4 Achter het bevel van de koning staat een grote macht, waaraan niemand kan twijfelen en waartegen niemand is opgewassen.
5 Wie de geboden gehoorzaamt, zal niets overkomen. De wijze weet wanneer en hoe hij moet handelen. 6 Voor alles is een tijd en een manier, ook al drukken de problemen van een mens zwaar op hem, 7 want wie weet wat er komen gaat? Wie kan het hem vertellen? 8 Niemand kan zijn geest ervan weerhouden hem te verlaten, geen enkel mens heeft de mogelijkheid zijn sterfdag te verzetten, want aan die duistere strijd ontkomt niemand. Het zal duidelijk zijn dat de goddeloosheid van een mens hem bij die gelegenheid niet te hulp komt. 9 Ik heb diep nagedacht over alles wat plaatsvindt op deze aarde, waar de mensen de mogelijkheid hebben elkaar kwaad te doen.
10 Ik heb gezien hoe goddeloze mensen eervol werden begraven, terwijl rechtvaardige mensen de heilige stad Jeruzalem moesten verlaten en vergeten werden. Ook dat is zinloos. 11 Omdat God zondaars niet onmiddellijk straft, denken veel mensen dat zij rustig kwaad kunnen doen. 12 Maar ook al blijft een mens, na honderd keer te hebben gezondigd, gewoon leven, toch weet ik heel goed dat zij die God vrezen beter af zijn. 13 Maar de goddelozen daarentegen zullen geen lang en gelukkig leven leiden: hun levensdagen zullen als schaduwen voorbijschieten, omdat zij geen ontzag voor God hebben.
14 Er gebeurt iets vreemds hier op aarde: sommige rechtvaardige mensen worden behandeld alsof zij zondaars zijn en sommige zondaars alsof zij rechtvaardig zijn. Ook dat is een vreemde en zinloze zaak. 15 Daarom lijkt het mij beter dat een mens geniet van zijn leven, want niets is beter dan dat een mens geniet van eten en drinken. De vreugde is het enige dat de mens heeft bij al het harde werk tijdens het leven dat God hem geeft.
16 Terwijl ik naar wijsheid zocht, keek ik oplettend naar alles wat op aarde gebeurde, de voortdurende activiteit die dag en nacht doorging: 17 ik zag in dat geen mens Gods werk hier op aarde kan begrijpen. Zelfs de meest wijze man, die zegt dat hij het begrijpt, vergist zich.

8 Who is as the wise man? and who knoweth the interpretation of a thing? a man's wisdom maketh his face to shine, and the boldness of his face shall be changed.
2 I counsel thee to keep the king's commandment, and that in regard of the oath of God.
3 Be not hasty to go out of his sight: stand not in an evil thing; for he doeth whatsoever pleaseth him.
4 Where the word of a king is, there is power: and who may say unto him, What doest thou?
5 Whoso keepeth the commandment shall feel no evil thing: and a wise man's heart discerneth both time and judgment.
6 Because to every purpose there is time and judgment, therefore the misery of man is great upon him.
7 For he knoweth not that which shall be: for who can tell him when it shall be?
8 There is no man that hath power over the spirit to retain the spirit; neither hath he power in the day of death: and there is no discharge in that war; neither shall wickedness deliver those that are given to it.
9 All this have I seen, and applied my heart unto every work that is done under the sun: there is a time wherein one man ruleth over another to his own hurt.
10 And so I saw the wicked buried, who had come and gone from the place of the holy, and they were forgotten in the city where they had so done: this is also vanity.
11 Because sentence against an evil work is not executed speedily, therefore the heart of the sons of men is fully set in them to do evil.
12 Though a sinner do evil an hundred times, and his days be prolonged, yet surely I know that it shall be well with them that fear God, which fear before him:
13 But it shall not be well with the wicked, neither shall he prolong his days, which are as a shadow; because he feareth not before God.
14 There is a vanity which is done upon the earth; that there be just men, unto whom it happeneth according to the work of the wicked; again, there be wicked men, to whom it happeneth according to the work of the righteous: I said that this also is vanity.
15 Then I commended mirth, because a man hath no better thing under the sun, than to eat, and to drink, and to be merry: for that shall abide with him of his labour the days of his life, which God giveth him under the sun.
16 When I applied mine heart to know wisdom, and to see the business that is done upon the earth: (for also there is that neither day nor night seeth sleep with his eyes:)
17 Then I beheld all the work of God, that a man cannot find out the work that is done under the sun: because though a man labour to seek it out, yet he shall not find it; yea farther; though a wise man think to know it, yet shall he not be able to find it.

8 Who is like a wise man?
And who knows the interpretation of a thing?
(A)A man’s wisdom makes his face shine,
And (B)the [a]sternness of his face is changed.

2 I say, “Keep the king’s commandment (C)for the sake of your oath to God. 3 (D)Do not be hasty to go from his presence. Do not take your stand for an evil thing, for he does whatever pleases him.”
4 Where the word of a king is, there is power;
And (E)who may say to him, “What are you doing?”
5 He who keeps his command will experience nothing harmful;
And a wise man’s heart [b]discerns both time and judgment,
6 Because (F)for every matter there is a time and judgment,
Though the misery of man [c]increases greatly.
7 (G)For he does not know what will happen;
So who can tell him when it will occur?
8 (H)No one has power over the spirit to retain the spirit,
And no one has power in the day of death.
There is (I)no release from that war,
And wickedness will not deliver those who are given to it.
9 All this I have seen, and applied my heart to every work that is done under the sun: There is a time in which one man rules over another to his own hurt.
Death Comes to All

14 There is a vanity which occurs on earth, that there are just men to whom it (N)happens according to the work of the wicked; again, there are wicked men to whom it happens according to the work of the (O)righteous. I said that this also is vanity.
15 (P)So I commended enjoyment, because a man has nothing better under the sun than to eat, drink, and be merry; for this will remain with him in his labor all the days of his life which God gives him under the sun.
16 When I applied my heart to know wisdom and to see the business that is done on earth, even though one sees no sleep day or night, 17 then I saw all the work of God, that (Q)a man cannot find out the work that is done under the sun. For though a man labors to discover it, yet he will not find it; moreover, though a wise man attempts to know it, he will not be able to find it.
