Echte wijsheid
7 Als goede mensen goede dingen over je zeggen, is dat beter dan dat je er goed uitziet.
En de dag dat je sterft, is beter dan de dag dat je werd geboren.
2 Het is beter om naar een begrafenis te gaan, dan naar een feest. Want de dood is het einde van ieder mens. Dat moeten we niet vergeten.
3 Verdriet is beter dan plezier, want als je laat merken dat je verdrietig bent, helpt dat je om er overheen te komen.
4 Wijze mensen denken na over de dood. Maar dwaze mensen denken alleen maar aan plezier maken.
5 Het is beter om te luisteren naar een waarschuwing van wijze mensen, dan naar het vrolijke zingen van dwazen. 6 Want het lachen van een dwaas is net zo snel voorbij als het geknetter van brandende dorens onder een pan. Het is maar lucht.
7 Luister goed: door afpersing wordt een wijs man dwaas, en door omkoping wordt een goed mens slecht.
8 Het einde van iets is beter dan het begin ervan.
Het is beter om geduldig te zijn dan trots.
9 Erger je niet te snel ergens aan, want ergernis woont in het hart van de dwazen.
10 Vraag niet: "Hoe komt het dat het vroeger beter was dan nu?" Want dat is geen wijze vraag.
11 Wijsheid is net zo belangrijk als een erfenis. Het is iets goeds voor de mensen die onder de zon leven. 12 Want wijsheid beschermt, net zoals geld beschermt. Maar wijsheid is nog beter dan geld, want door wijsheid weet een wijs mens hoe hij leven moet.
13 Kijk naar wat God doet. Wie kan recht maken wat Hij heeft gebogen?
14 Geniet wanneer het goed met je gaat. Maar bedenk in moeilijke tijden: "Ook deze dagen heeft God gemaakt, net zoals die andere dagen." Een mens heeft geen idee van wat er in de toekomst gebeuren zal.
15 Ik heb van alles gezien in de korte tijd dat ik leef op aarde. Bijvoorbeeld: een goed en eerlijk mens met wie het toch slecht afloopt. En een slecht mens die toch lang leeft. 16 Wees niet al te goed en eerlijk. Wees niet al te wijs. Je zou jezelf er alleen maar kwaad mee doen. 17 Maar wees ook niet al te slecht en wees geen dwaas. Want waarom zou je sterven vóór het je tijd is? 18 Probeer het midden te vinden tussen wijs en dwaas. Als je ontzag hebt voor God, zul je het juiste midden weten te vinden.
19 Eén wijs mens is door zijn wijsheid machtiger dan tien bestuurders van een stad.
20 Niemand op aarde leeft zó goed, dat hij nooit iets verkeerds doet. 21 Luister daarom niet naar alles wat er gezegd wordt. Want anders hoor je nog dat je knecht je vervloekt. 22 Want van binnen weet je wel dat je zelf ook vaak andere mensen vervloekt hebt.
Predikers zoektocht naar wijsheid
23 Ik heb dit allemaal onderzocht omdat ik wijs wilde worden. Maar het is me niet gelukt: de wijsheid bleef onbereikbaar. 24 Hoe kún je bereiken wat zo ver weg is en zo diep verstopt zit? Het leven is niet te begrijpen. 25 Ik bestudeerde alles, omdat het mijn diepste wens was om meer te weten en te begrijpen. Ik wilde bewijzen dat het dwaas is om je niets van God aan te trekken. Dat het dwaas is om onverstandig te zijn. 26 En ik ontdekte iets wat nog erger is dan de dood: een ontrouwe vrouw. Haar hart is een valkuil en haar handen zijn boeien. Iemand die van God houdt, kan aan haar ontsnappen. Maar iemand die niet om God geeft, wordt door haar gevangen.
27 Dit is wat ik ontdekt heb – ik heb over de dingen nagedacht, omdat ik tot een goede conclusie wilde komen. 28 Maar ik heb die conclusie nog niet gevonden. Ik ben er nog steeds naar op zoek. Onder duizend mensen heb ik maar één goede man gevonden. Maar geen enkele goede vrouw. 29 Maar wat ik wél heb ontdekt, is dat God de mensen wel goed gemaakt heeft, maar dat ze zelf allerlei slechte dingen bedenken.

7 美名优于美好的膏油，
死亡的日子胜过诞生的日子。
2 往服丧之家，比往宴乐之家还好，
因为死是人人的结局，
活人要把这事放在心上。
3 忧愁胜于嬉笑，
因为面带愁容，能使内心得着好处。
4 智慧人的心在服丧之家，
愚昧人的心在欢乐之家。
5 听智慧人的斥责，
胜过听愚昧人的歌唱。
6 愚昧人的笑声，
就像锅底下荆棘的爆声一样。
这也是虚空。
7 勒索会使智慧人变为愚妄，
贿赂能败坏人心。
8 事情的结局胜于开端，
存心忍耐的，胜过居心骄傲的。
9 你心里不要轻易动怒，
因为恼怒留在愚昧人的胸怀中。
10 你不要说：“为甚么从前的日子胜过现在的呢？”
你这样问，不是出于智慧。
11 智慧与产业都是好的，
对得见天日的人是有益的。
12 因为受智慧的庇护，如同受银子的庇护。
唯有智慧能保全智慧人的生命，这就是知识的益处。
体察 神的心意行事
13 要观察 神的作为，
因为他所屈曲的，
谁能弄直呢？
14 在亨通的日子，应当享福；
遭遇患难的时候，就当省察。
神使这两样并存，
为了叫人查不出未来的事。
15 在我虚空的日子里，我见过这两件事：有义人行义反而灭亡，有恶人行恶倒享长寿。 16 不要过分公义，也不要太过有智慧，何必自取灭亡呢？ 17 不要过分作恶，也不要作愚昧人，何必时候未到就死？ 18 持守这个是好的，那个也不要放松，因为敬畏 神的人，都必避免这两个极端。
19 智慧使智慧人比城中十个官长更有能力。 20 世上实在没有一个行善而不犯罪的义人。 21 人所说的一切话，都不要放在心上，因你可能听见仆人咒骂你。 22 其实你心里明白，自己也曾多次咒骂别人。
23 这一切我都用智慧试验过。我说：“我要得智慧”，智慧却远离我。 24 那离得远又极深奥的，谁能找到呢？ 25 我转念，一心去了解、考察并寻觅智慧和事理，又要知道愚蒙是邪恶的，狂妄是愚昧的。 26 我发现一个比死亡更恶毒的妇人，她有如罗网，心如陷阱，手如锁炼。蒙 神喜悦的人得以摆脱她，罪人却被她缠住。
27 传道者说：“看哪！我发现了这件事，我一再揣摩，要找出事情的道理。 28 我的心仍在寻觅，却还找不到，就是在一千个男人中，我找到一个正直人，但在所有的女人中，连一个也找不到。 29 我所明白的，只有这件事： 神造人原是正直的，他们却找出许多巧计。”

Wisdom
7 A good name is better than fine perfume,(A)
and the day of death better than the day of birth.(B)
2 It is better to go to a house of mourning
than to go to a house of feasting,
for death(C) is the destiny(D) of everyone;
the living should take this to heart.
3 Frustration is better than laughter,(E)
because a sad face is good for the heart.
4 The heart of the wise is in the house of mourning,
but the heart of fools is in the house of pleasure.(F)
5 It is better to heed the rebuke(G) of a wise person
than to listen to the song of fools.
6 Like the crackling of thorns(H) under the pot,
so is the laughter(I) of fools.
This too is meaningless.
7 Extortion turns a wise person into a fool,
and a bribe(J) corrupts the heart.
8 The end of a matter is better than its beginning,
and patience(K) is better than pride.
9 Do not be quickly provoked(L) in your spirit,
for anger resides in the lap of fools.(M)
10 Do not say, “Why were the old days(N) better than these?”
For it is not wise to ask such questions.
11 Wisdom, like an inheritance, is a good thing(O)
and benefits those who see the sun.(P)
12 Wisdom is a shelter
as money is a shelter,
but the advantage of knowledge is this:
Wisdom preserves those who have it.
13 Consider what God has done:(Q)
Who can straighten
what he has made crooked?(R)
14 When times are good, be happy;
but when times are bad, consider this:
God has made the one
as well as the other.(S)
Therefore, no one can discover
anything about their future.
15 In this meaningless life(T) of mine I have seen both of these:
the righteous perishing in their righteousness,
and the wicked living long in their wickedness.(U)
16 Do not be overrighteous,
neither be overwise—
why destroy yourself?
17 Do not be overwicked,
and do not be a fool—
why die before your time?(V)
18 It is good to grasp the one
and not let go of the other.
Whoever fears God(W) will avoid all extremes.[a]
20 Indeed, there is no one on earth who is righteous,(Z)
no one who does what is right and never sins.(AA)
21 Do not pay attention to every word people say,
or you(AB) may hear your servant cursing you—
22 for you know in your heart
that many times you yourself have cursed others.
23 All this I tested by wisdom and I said,
“I am determined to be wise”(AC)—
but this was beyond me.
24 Whatever exists is far off and most profound—
who can discover it?(AD)
25 So I turned my mind to understand,
to investigate and to search out wisdom and the scheme of things(AE)
and to understand the stupidity of wickedness
and the madness of folly.(AF)
26 I find more bitter than death
the woman who is a snare,(AG)
whose heart is a trap
and whose hands are chains.
The man who pleases God will escape her,
but the sinner she will ensnare.(AH)
27 “Look,” says the Teacher,[b](AI) “this is what I have discovered:
“Adding one thing to another to discover the scheme of things—
28 while I was still searching
but not finding—
I found one upright man among a thousand,
but not one upright woman(AJ) among them all.
29 This only have I found:
God created mankind upright,
but they have gone in search of many schemes.”

3 Sorrow is better than laughter: for by the sadness of the countenance the heart is made better.
4 The heart of the wise is in the house of mourning; but the heart of fools is in the house of mirth.
5 It is better to hear the rebuke of the wise, than for a man to hear the song of fools.
6 For as the crackling of thorns under a pot, so is the laughter of the fool: this also is vanity.
7 Surely oppression maketh a wise man mad; and a gift destroyeth the heart.
8 Better is the end of a thing than the beginning thereof: and the patient in spirit is better than the proud in spirit.
9 Be not hasty in thy spirit to be angry: for anger resteth in the bosom of fools.
10 Say not thou, What is the cause that the former days were better than these? for thou dost not enquire wisely concerning this.
11 Wisdom is good with an inheritance: and by it there is profit to them that see the sun.
12 For wisdom is a defence, and money is a defence: but the excellency of knowledge is, that wisdom giveth life to them that have it.
13 Consider the work of God: for who can make that straight, which he hath made crooked?
14 In the day of prosperity be joyful, but in the day of adversity consider: God also hath set the one over against the other, to the end that man should find nothing after him.
15 All things have I seen in the days of my vanity: there is a just man that perisheth in his righteousness, and there is a wicked man that prolongeth his life in his wickedness.
16 Be not righteous over much; neither make thyself over wise: why shouldest thou destroy thyself ?
17 Be not over much wicked, neither be thou foolish: why shouldest thou die before thy time?
18 It is good that thou shouldest take hold of this; yea, also from this withdraw not thine hand: for he that feareth God shall come forth of them all.
19 Wisdom strengtheneth the wise more than ten mighty men which are in the city.
20 For there is not a just man upon earth, that doeth good, and sinneth not.
21 Also take no heed unto all words that are spoken; lest thou hear thy servant curse thee:
22 For oftentimes also thine own heart knoweth that thou thyself likewise hast cursed others.
23 All this have I proved by wisdom: I said, I will be wise; but it was far from me.
24 That which is far off, and exceeding deep, who can find it out?
25 I applied mine heart to know, and to search, and to seek out wisdom, and the reason of things, and to know the wickedness of folly, even of foolishness and madness:
26 And I find more bitter than death the woman, whose heart is snares and nets, and her hands as bands: whoso pleaseth God shall escape from her; but the sinner shall be taken by her.
27 Behold, this have I found, saith the preacher, counting one by one, to find out the account:
28 Which yet my soul seeketh, but I find not: one man among a thousand have I found; but a woman among all those have I not found.
29 Lo, this only have I found, that God hath made man upright; but they have sought out many inventions.
