¹¹ “Phinehas son of Eleazar, the son of Aaron, the priest, has turned my anger away from the Israelites.^(A) Since he was as zealous for my honor^(B) among them as I am, I did not put an end to them in my zeal. ¹² Therefore tell him I am making my covenant of peace^(C) with him. ¹³ He and his descendants will have a covenant of a lasting priesthood,^(D) because he was zealous^(E) for the honor^(F) of his God and made atonement^(G) for the Israelites.”^(H)

¹⁷ For it is declared:

¹⁸ The former regulation is set aside because it was weak and useless^{(B) 19} (for the law made nothing perfect),^(C) and a better hope^(D) is introduced, by which we draw near to God.^(E)

²⁰ And it was not without an oath! Others became priests without any oath, ²¹ but he became a priest with an oath when God said to him:

²² Because of this oath, Jesus has become the guarantor of a better covenant.^(H)
