²² When they had gone up into ^(A)the Negev, ^[a]they came to Hebron where ^(B)Ahiman, Sheshai, and Talmai, the ^[b]descendants of ^(C)Anak were. (Hebron was built seven years before ^(D)Zoan in Egypt.)

²⁸ Nevertheless, ^(A)the people who live in the land are strong, and the cities are fortified and very large. And indeed, we saw ^(B)the ^[a]descendants of Anak there!

³³ We also saw the ^[a](A)Nephilim there (the sons of Anak are part of the Nephilim); and ^(B)we were like ^[b]grasshoppers in our own sight, and so we were in their sight.”

²¹ Then Joshua came at that time and eliminated ^(A)the Anakim from the hill country, from Hebron, Debir, Anab, and from all the hill country of Judah and all the hill country of Israel. Joshua utterly destroyed them with their cities.

²² There were no Anakim left in the land of the sons of Israel; only in Gaza, ^(A)Gath, and ^(B)Ashdod some remained.
