The Silver Trumpets

10 Yahweh spoke to Moses, saying, “Make yourself two silver trumpets; make them of hammered-work. You will use them[a] for calling the community and for breaking the camp. You will blow them, and all the community will assemble to the doorway of the tent of assembly. But if they blow only one, the leaders, the heads of the thousands of Israel, will assemble to you. When you will blow a blast, the camps that are camping on the east will set out; when you blow a second blast, the camps that are camping on the south will set out; they will blow a blast for their journeys. But when summoning the assembly, you will blow, but you will not signal with a loud noise. The sons of Aaron, the priests, will blow on the trumpets; this will be an eternal decree for your generations. If you go to war in your land against the enemy who attacks you, you will signal with a loud noise on the trumpets. You will be remembered before[b] Yahweh your God, and you will be rescued from your enemies.

10 “And on the day of your joy and in your appointed times, at the beginning of your months, you will blow on the trumpets in addition to your burnt offerings and in addition to the sacrifices of your fellowship offerings. And they will be as a memorial for you before[c] your God; I am Yahweh your God.”

The Israelites Depart from Sinai

11 And it happened, in the second year, in the second month, on the twentieth of the month the cloud was lifted from upon the tabernacle of the testimony.[d] 12 And the Israelites[e] set out for their journey[f] from the desert of Sinai, and the cloud dwelled in the desert of Paran. 13 They set out for the first time[g] on the command of Yahweh in the hand of Moses.[h] 14 The standard of the camp of the descendants[i] of Judah set out for the first time according to their divisions, with Nahshon son of Amminadab over its division. 15 And Nathanel son of Zuar was over the division of the descendants[j] of Issachar; 16 Eliab son of Helon was over the division of the tribe of the descendants[k] of Zebulun.

17 The tabernacle was taken down, and the sons of Gershon and the sons of Merari, the bearers of the tabernacle, set out. 18 And the standard of the camp of Reuben according to their divisions; Elizur son of Shedeur was over their division. 19 Shelumiel son of Zurishaddai was over the division of the sons of the tribe of Simeon. 20 Eliasaph son of Deuel was over the division of the tribe of the descendants[l] of Gad.

21 The Kohathites, the bearers of the sanctuary, set out, and they set up the tabernacle before they arrived. 22 And the stand of the camp of the descendants[m] of Ephraim set out according to their divisions; Elishama son of Ammihud was over its division. 23 Gamaliel son of Pedahzur was over the division of the tribe of the descendants[n] of Manasseh. 24 Abidan son of Gideoni was over the division of the tribe of the descendants[o] of Benjamin.

25 Then the standard of the camp of the descendants[p] of Dan, who formed a rear guard for all the camps, set out according to their divisions; Ahiezer son of Ammishaddai was over its division. 26 Pagiel son of Ocran was over the division of the tribe of the descendants[q] of Asher. 27 Ahira son of Enan was over the division of the tribe of the descendants[r] of Naphtali. 28 These were the departures of the Israelites[s] according to their divisions; and so they set out.

29 Moses said to Hobab son of Reuel the Midianite, the father-in-law of Moses, “We are setting out to the place that Yahweh said, ‘I will give it to you’; go with us, and we will treat you well[t] because Yahweh promised[u] good concerning Israel.” 30 But he said to him, “I will not go. I will only go to my land and to my family.” 31 He[v] said, “Please, do not abandon us because you know our encampment in the desert, and you should be our guide.[w] 32 Moreover, if you go with us, the good that Yahweh will do to us we will do to you.”

33 And so they set out from the mountain of Yahweh a journey of three days, with the ark of the covenant of Yahweh setting out ahead of them[x] three days’ journey to search out a resting place for them; 34 and the cloud of Yahweh was over them by day when they set out from the camp.

35 And whenever the ark was setting out Moses would say,

“Rise up, Yahweh!
May your enemies be scattered;
may the ones that hate you flee from your presence.”
36 And when it rested he would say,
“Return, Yahweh,
to the countless thousands of Israel.”

10 And the LORD spoke to Moses, saying,

“Make two trumpets of silver for yourself. You shall make them out of hammered work, so that you may use them for the assembling of the Congregation and for the departure of the camp.

“And when they shall blow with them, all the Congregation shall assemble to you, before the door of the Tabernacle of the Congregation.

“But if they blow with one, then the Princes or heads over the thousands of Israel shall come to you.

“But if you blow an alarm, then the camp that is pitched on the east part shall go forward.

“If you blow a second alarm, then the camp of those who lie on the south side shall march. They shall blow an alarm when they leave.

“But in the assembling the Congregation, you shall blow without an alarm.

“And the sons of Aaron the Priest shall blow the trumpets. And you shall have them as a Law forever in your generations.

“And when you go to war in your land, against the enemy that troubles you, you shall blow an alarm with the trumpets, and you shall be remembered before the LORD your God, and shall be saved from your enemies

10 “(also, on the day of your gladness and on your Feast days, and on the beginning of your months). You shall also blow the trumpets over your Burnt Sacrifices and over your Peace Offerings, so that they may be a remembrance for you before your God. I am the LORD your God.”

11 And in the second year, in the second month, on the twentieth of the month, the cloud was taken up from the Tabernacle of the Testimony.

12 And the children of Israel departed on their journeys, out of the desert of Sinai. And the cloud rested in the wilderness of Paran.

13 So they first took their journey at the Commandment of the LORD, by the hand of Moses.

14 In the first place went the standard of the camp of the children of Judah, according to their armies. And Nahshon, the son of Amminadab, was over his band.

15 And over the band of the tribe of the children of Issachar was Nethanel, the son of Zuar.

16 And over the band of the tribe of the children of Zebulun was Eliab, the son of Helon.

17 When the Tabernacle was taken down, then the sons of Gershon and the sons of Merari went forward, bearing the Tabernacle.

18 Afterward, the standard of the host of Reuben departed, according to their armies. And over his band was Elizur, the son of Shedeur.

19 And over the band of the tribe of the children of Simeon was Shelumiel, the son of Zurishaddai.

20 And over the band of the tribe of the children of Gad was Eliasaph, the son of Deuel.

21 The Kohathites also went forward and bore the Sanctuary (for which the Tabernacle had been set up).

22 Then the standard of the camp of the children of Ephraim went forward, according to their armies. And over his band was Elishama, the son of Ammihud.

23 And over the band of the tribe of the sons of Manasseh was Gamaliel, the son of Pedahzur.

24 And over the band of the tribe of the sons of Benjamin was Abidan, the son of Gideoni.

25 Last, the standard of the camp of the children of Dan marched, gathering all the camps according to their armies. And over his band was Ahiezer, the son of Ammishaddai.

26 And over the band of the tribe of the children of Asher was Pagiel, the son of Ocran.

27 And over the band of the tribe of the children of Naphtali was Ahira, the son of Enan.

28 This was the setting out of the children of Israel, according to their armies, when they marched.

29 Afterward, Moses said to Hobab the son of Reuel the Midianite, the father-in-law of Moses, “We go into the place of which the LORD said, ‘I will give it to you.’ Come with us, and we will do you good. For the LORD has promised good to Israel.”

30 And he answered him, “I will not go. But I will depart to my own country, and to my kindred.”

31 Then he said, “Please do not leave us. For you know our camping places in the wilderness. Therefore, you may be our guide.

32 “And if you go with us, what goodness the LORD shall show to us, the same will we show to you.”

33 So they departed from the Mount of the LORD, three days’ journey. And the Ark of the Covenant of the LORD went before them on the three days’ journey, to search out a resting place for them.

34 And the cloud of the LORD was upon them by day, when they went out of the camp.

35 And when the Ark went forward, Moses said, “Rise up, LORD, and let Your enemies be scattered. And let those who hate You, flee before You.”

36 And when it rested, he said, “Return, O LORD, to the many thousands of Israel.”

The Silver Trumpets

10 The Lord said to Moses: “Make two trumpets(A) of hammered silver, and use them for calling the community(B) together and for having the camps set out.(C) When both are sounded, the whole community is to assemble before you at the entrance to the tent of meeting. If only one is sounded, the leaders(D)—the heads of the clans of Israel—are to assemble before you. When a trumpet blast is sounded, the tribes camping on the east are to set out.(E) At the sounding of a second blast, the camps on the south are to set out.(F) The blast will be the signal for setting out. To gather the assembly, blow the trumpets,(G) but not with the signal for setting out.(H)

“The sons of Aaron, the priests, are to blow the trumpets. This is to be a lasting ordinance for you and the generations to come.(I) When you go into battle in your own land against an enemy who is oppressing you,(J) sound a blast on the trumpets.(K) Then you will be remembered(L) by the Lord your God and rescued from your enemies.(M) 10 Also at your times of rejoicing—your appointed festivals and New Moon feasts(N)—you are to sound the trumpets(O) over your burnt offerings(P) and fellowship offerings,(Q) and they will be a memorial for you before your God. I am the Lord your God.(R)

The Israelites Leave Sinai

11 On the twentieth day of the second month of the second year,(S) the cloud lifted(T) from above the tabernacle of the covenant law.(U) 12 Then the Israelites set out from the Desert of Sinai and traveled from place to place until the cloud came to rest in the Desert of Paran.(V) 13 They set out, this first time, at the Lord’s command through Moses.(W)

14 The divisions of the camp of Judah went first, under their standard.(X) Nahshon son of Amminadab(Y) was in command. 15 Nethanel son of Zuar was over the division of the tribe(Z) of Issachar,(AA) 16 and Eliab son of Helon(AB) was over the division of the tribe of Zebulun.(AC) 17 Then the tabernacle was taken down, and the Gershonites and Merarites, who carried it, set out.(AD)

29 Now Moses said to Hobab(AU) son of Reuel(AV) the Midianite, Moses’ father-in-law,(AW) “We are setting out for the place about which the Lord said, ‘I will give it to you.’(AX) Come with us and we will treat you well, for the Lord has promised good things to Israel.”

30 He answered, “No, I will not go;(AY) I am going back to my own land and my own people.(AZ)
