Again, the LORD spoke to Moses in the wilderness of Sinai, in the Tabernacle of the Congregation, on the first of the second month, in the second year after they had come out of the land of Egypt, saying,

“Take the sum of all the Congregation of the children of Israel, after their families and households of their fathers, with the number of their names—all the males, man by man,

“from twenty years old and above—all that go forth to the war in Israel. You and Aaron shall number them throughout their armies.

“And with you shall be men of every tribe, such as are the heads of the House of their fathers.

“And these are the names of the men that shall stand with you: of Reuben, Elizur, the son of Shedeur;

“of Simeon, Shelumiel the son of Zurishaddai;

“of Judah, Nahshon the son of Amminadab;

“of Issachar, Nethanel the son of Zuar;

“of Zebulun, Eliab, the son of Helon;

 “(of the children of Joseph) of Ephraim, Elishama the son of Ammihud; of Manasseh, Gamaliel, the son of Pedahzur;

 “of Benjamin, Abidan the son of Gideoni;

 “of Dan, Ahiezer, the son of Ammishaddai;

 “of Asher, Pagiel, the son of Ocran;

 “of Gad, Eliasaph the son of Deuel;

 “of Naphtali, Ahira the son of Enan.”

 These were famous in the Congregation, princes of the tribes of their fathers, heads over thousands in Israel.

 Then Moses and Aaron took these men who are expressed by name.

 And they called all the Congregation together on the first of the second month, who declared their kindred by their families, by the Houses of their fathers, according to the number of names, from twenty years old and above, man by man.

 As the LORD had commanded Moses, so he numbered them in the wilderness of Sinai.

 So were the sons of Reuben, Israel’s eldest son, by their generations, by their families, by the Houses of their fathers, according to the number of names, man by man, every male from twenty years old and above, as many as went forth to war.

 The number of those of the tribe of Reuben was forty-six thousand five hundred.

 Of the sons of Simeon, by their generations, by their families, by the Houses of their fathers—the sum of them, by the number of names, man by man, every male from twenty years old and above, all that went forth to war—

 the sum of those of the tribe of Simeon was fifty-nine thousand three hundred.

 Of the sons of Gad, by their generations, by their families, by the Houses of their fathers—according to the number of names, from twenty years old and above, all that went forth to war—

 the number of those of the tribe of Gad was forty-five thousand six hundred and fifty.

 Of the sons of Judah, by their generations, by their families, by the Houses of their fathers—according to the number of names, from twenty years old and above, all that went forth to war—

 the number of those of the tribe of Judah was seventy-four thousand six hundred.

 Of the sons of Issachar, by their generations, by their families, by the Houses of their fathers—according to the number of names, from twenty years old and above, all that went forth to war—

 the number of those of the tribe of Issachar was fifty-four thousand four hundred.

 Of the sons of Zebulun, by their generations, by their families, by the Houses of their fathers—according to the number of names, from twenty years old and above, all that went forth to war—

 the number of those of the tribe of Zebulun was fifty-seven thousand four hundred.

 Of the sons of Joseph (namely of the sons of Ephraim), by their generations, by their families, by the Houses of their fathers—according to the number of names, from twenty years old and above, all that went forth to war—

 the number of those of the tribe of Ephraim was forty thousand five hundred.

 Of the sons of Manasseh, by their generations, by their families, by the Houses of their fathers—according to the number of names, from twenty years old and above, all that went forth to war—

 the number of those of the tribe of Manasseh was thirty-two thousand two hundred.

 Of the sons of Benjamin, by their generations, by their families, by the Houses of their fathers—according to the number of names, from twenty years old and above, all that went forth to war—

 the number of those of the tribe of Benjamin was thirty-five thousand four hundred.

 Of the sons of Dan, by their generations, by their families, by the Houses of their fathers—according to the number of names, from twenty years old and above, all that went forth to war—

 the number of those of the tribe of Dan was sixty-two thousand seven hundred.

 Of the sons of Asher, by their generations, by their families, by the Houses of their fathers—according to the number of names, from twenty years old and above, all that went forth to war—

 the number of those of the tribe of Asher was forty-one thousand five hundred.

 Of the children of Naphtali, by their generations, by their families, by the Houses of their fathers—according to the number of names, from twenty years old and above, all that went to the war—

 the number of those of the tribe of Naphtali was fifty-three thousand four hundred.

 These are the sums which Moses and Aaron numbered, and the Princes of Israel (twelve men, each representing the House of their fathers).

 So was all the sum of the sons of Israel, by the Houses of their fathers, from twenty years old and above, all that went to the war in Israel.

 And they were altogether in number six hundred-three thousand five hundred fifty.

 But the Levites, after the tribes of their fathers, were not included among them.

 For the LORD had spoken to Moses, and said,

 “Only you shall not include the tribe of Levi, nor take a census of them among the children of Israel.

 “But you shall appoint the Levites over the Tabernacle of the Testimony, and over all of its instruments, and over all things that belong to it. They shall bear the Tabernacle and all its instruments, and shall minister in it, and shall dwell all around the Tabernacle.

 “And when the Tabernacle goes forth, the Levites shall take it down. And when the Tabernacle is to be pitched, the Levites shall set it up. For the stranger who comes near shall be killed.

 “Also, the children of Israel shall pitch their tents, every man in his own camp, and every man under his own standard, throughout their armies.

 “But the Levites shall pitch all around the Tabernacle of the Testimony, lest vengeance come upon the Congregation of the children of Israel. And the Levites shall take charge of the Tabernacle of the Testimony.”

 So the children of Israel did according to all that the LORD had Commanded Moses. So did they.
