5,6 Daarom stuurde koning Balak boodschappers naar Bileam (de zoon van Beor) die in zijn vaderland Petor dicht bij de Eufraat woonde. Hij smeekte Bileam hem te komen helpen met de woorden: ‘Er is hier een volk uit Egypte aangekomen dat het hele land in beslag neemt. Ze hebben hun kamp recht tegenover mij opgeslagen! Kom alstublieft hierheen en vervloek hen voor mij, zodat ik hen uit mijn land kan verdrijven. Want ze zijn mij te sterk. U staat erom bekend dat uw zegen ook werkelijk een zegen is en dat ieder die door u wordt vervloekt, ook werkelijk ís vervloekt.’
