Moses Intercedes for the People

¹³ But ^(A)Moses said to the Lord, “Then the Egyptians will hear of it, for you brought up this people in your might from among them,

^9 (A)But I acted ^(B)for the sake of my name, ^(C)that it should not be profaned in the sight of the nations among whom they lived, ^(D)in whose sight I made myself known to them in bringing them out of the land of Egypt.

¹¹ But ^(A)Moses implored the Lord his God and said, “O Lord, why does your wrath burn hot against your people, whom you have brought out of the land of Egypt with great power and with a mighty hand? ^12 (B)Why should the Egyptians say, ‘With evil intent did he bring them out, to kill them in the mountains and to consume them from the face of the earth’? Turn from your burning anger and ^(C)relent from this disaster against your people. ¹³ Remember Abraham, Isaac, and Israel, your servants, to whom you ^(D)swore by your own self, and said to them, ^(E)‘I will multiply your offspring as the stars of heaven, and all this land that I have promised I will give to your offspring, and they shall inherit it forever.’” ¹⁴ And the Lord ^(F)relented from the disaster that he had spoken of bringing on his people.

¹⁴ But I acted for the sake of my name, that it should not be profaned in the sight of the nations, ^(A)in whose sight I had brought them out.

⁸ O Lord, what can I say, when Israel has turned their backs before their enemies! ⁹ For the Canaanites and all the inhabitants of the land will hear of it and will surround us and ^(A)cut off our name from the earth. And what will you do for your great name?”

^26 (A)And I prayed to the Lord, ‘O Lord God, do not destroy your people and your heritage, whom you have redeemed through your greatness, whom you have brought out of Egypt with a mighty hand. ²⁷ Remember your servants, Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. Do not regard the stubbornness of this people, or their wickedness or their sin, ²⁸ lest the land from which you brought us say, ^(B)“Because the Lord was not able to bring them into the land that he promised them, and because he hated them, he has brought them out to put them to death in the wilderness.”
