Bewoners van Jeruzalem
11 De leiders van het volk hadden zich al op een vroeger tijdstip in Jeruzalem gevestigd. Via een loting werd nu een tiende deel van het volk uit de andere steden en dorpen van Juda en Benjamin aangewezen om er óók te gaan wonen. 2 Daarnaast verhuisden enkele families vrijwillig naar Jeruzalem en werden hierom hoog geprezen.
3 Hier volgt een lijst met de namen van de familiehoofden uit de provincie die naar Jeruzalem kwamen. De meeste priesters, Levieten, tempelknechten en nakomelingen van Salomoʼs dienaren bleven echter gewoon in de verschillende steden van Juda wonen.
4-6 De leiders van de stam Juda waren Athaja, de zoon van Uzzia, de zoon van Zacharia, de zoon van Amarja, de zoon van Sefatja, de zoon van Mahalaleël, een nakomeling van Peres; Maäseja, de zoon van Baruch, de zoon van Kolhozé, de zoon van Hazaja, de zoon van Adaja, de zoon van Jojarib, de zoon van Zacharia, de zoon van Siloni. Er woonden in totaal vierhonderdachtenzestig dappere nakomelingen van Peres in Jeruzalem.
7-9 De leiders van de stam Benjamin waren Sallu, de zoon van Mesullam, de zoon van Joëd, de zoon van Pedaja, de zoon van Kolaja, de zoon van Maäseja, de zoon van Ithiël, de zoon van Jesaja, de negenhonderdachtentwintig nakomelingen van Gabbai en Sallai. Hun leider heette Joël, de zoon van Zichri. Hij werd bijgestaan door Juda, de zoon van Hassenua.
10-14 De leiders van de priesters waren Jedaja, de zoon van Jojarib; Jachin; Seraja, de zoon van Hilkia, de zoon van Mesullam, de zoon van Zadok, de zoon van Merajoth, de zoon van de hogepriester Ahitub. Deze drie mannen gaven leiding aan in totaal achthonderdtweeëntwintig priesters die dienst deden in de tempel. Er waren nog eens tweehonderdtweeënveertig priesters die onder leiding stonden van Adaja, de zoon van Jeroham, de zoon van Pelalja, de zoon van Amzi, de zoon van Zacharia, de zoon van Pashur, de zoon van Malkia. Een groep van honderdachtentwintig dappere mannen stond onder leiding van Amassai, de zoon van Azareël, de zoon van Ahzai, de zoon van Mesillemoth, de zoon van Immer. Hij werd bijgestaan door Zabdiël, de zoon van Gedolim.
15,16 De Levitische leiders waren Semaja, de zoon van Hassub, de zoon van Azrikam, de zoon van Hasabja, de zoon van Bunni; Sabbethai en Jozabad, die de leiding hadden over de de werkzaamheden die buiten de tempel plaatsvonden; 17 Mattanja, de zoon van Micha, de zoon van Zabdi, de zoon van Asaf, was de voorzanger die de lofprijzing bij het gebed inzette; Bakbukja en Abda, de zoon van Sammua, de zoon van Galal, de zoon van Jeduthun, stonden hem daarbij terzijde. 18 Er woonden in totaal tweehonderdvierentachtig Levieten in Jeruzalem. 19 Verder waren er honderdtweeënzeventig poortwachters. Zij stonden onder leiding van Akkub, Talmon en hun familieleden. 20 De andere priesters, Levieten en het gewone volk woonden daar waar het land lag, dat aan de familie behoorde. 21 Maar alle tempelknechten woonden op de heuvel Ofel in Jeruzalem, hun leiders heetten Ziha en Gispa. 22 De man die toezicht hield op de Levieten in Jeruzalem en op degenen die dienst deden in de tempel, heette Uzzi en was een zoon van Bani, de zoon van Hasabja, de zoon van Mattanja, de zoon van Micha. Hij was een nakomeling van Asaf. Asafs nakomelingen werden tempelzangers. 23 Er was een koninklijk besluit waarin de diensten van de zangers van dag tot dag geregeld werden. 24 Pethahja, de zoon van Mesezabeël, een nakomeling van Zerach, een zoon van Juda, adviseerde de koning bij alle kwesties die betrekking hadden op het algemeen bestuur.
25-30 Dit zijn de namen van enkele dorpen waar mensen van Juda woonden: Kirjat-Arba, Dibon, Jekabzeël en hun omringende dorpen, Jesua, Molada, Bet-Pelet, Hazar-Sual, Berseba en zijn omringende dorpen, Ziklag, Mechona en zijn dorpen, En-Rimmon, Zora, Jarmuth, Zanóah, Adullam en hun omringende dorpen. Men woonde dus verspreid over het hele gebied tussen Berseba en het dal Hinnom.
31-35 De mensen van de stam Benjamin woonden in Gibea, Michmas, Ajja, Betel en de omringende dorpen, Anathoth, Nob, Ananja, Hazor, Rama, Gitta im, Hadid, Seboïm, Neballat, Lod en Ono, het dal van de handwerkslieden. 36 Enkele afdelingen van Levieten die in Juda woonden, verhuisden naar het gebied van de stam Benjamin.

The People Dwelling in Jerusalem
11 Now the leaders of the people dwelt at Jerusalem; the rest of the people cast lots to bring one out of ten to dwell in Jerusalem, (A)the holy city, and nine-tenths were to dwell in other cities. 2 And the people blessed all the men who (B)willingly offered themselves to dwell at Jerusalem.
3 (C)These are the heads of the province who dwelt in Jerusalem. (But in the cities of Judah everyone dwelt in his own possession in their cities—Israelites, priests, Levites, (D)Nethinim, and (E)descendants of Solomon’s servants.) 4 Also (F)in Jerusalem dwelt some of the children of Judah and of the children of Benjamin.
The children of Judah: Athaiah the son of Uzziah, the son of Zechariah, the son of Amariah, the son of Shephatiah, the son of Mahalalel, of the children of (G)Perez; 5 and Maaseiah the son of Baruch, the son of Col-Hozeh, the son of Hazaiah, the son of Adaiah, the son of Joiarib, the son of Zechariah, the son of Shiloni. 6 All the sons of Perez who dwelt at Jerusalem were four hundred and sixty-eight valiant men.
7 And these are the sons of Benjamin: Sallu the son of Meshullam, the son of Joed, the son of Pedaiah, the son of Kolaiah, the son of Maaseiah, the son of Ithiel, the son of Jeshaiah; 8 and after him Gabbai and Sallai, nine hundred and twenty-eight. 9 Joel the son of Zichri was their overseer, and Judah the son of [a]Senuah was second over the city.
10 (H)Of the priests: Jedaiah the son of Joiarib, and Jachin; 11 Seraiah the son of Hilkiah, the son of Meshullam, the son of Zadok, the son of Meraioth, the son of Ahitub, was the leader of the house of God. 12 Their brethren who did the work of the house were eight hundred and twenty-two; and Adaiah the son of Jeroham, the son of Pelaliah, the son of Amzi, the son of Zechariah, the son of Pashhur, the son of Malchijah, 13 and his brethren, heads of the fathers’ houses, were two hundred and forty-two; and Amashai the son of Azarel, the son of Ahzai, the son of Meshillemoth, the son of Immer, 14 and their brethren, mighty men of valor, were one hundred and twenty-eight. Their overseer was Zabdiel [b]the son of one of the great men.
15 Also of the Levites: Shemaiah the son of Hasshub, the son of Azrikam, the son of Hashabiah, the son of Bunni; 16 (I)Shabbethai and (J)Jozabad, of the heads of the Levites, had the oversight of (K)the business outside of the [c]house of God; 17 Mattaniah the son of [d]Micha, the son of Zabdi, the son of Asaph, the leader who began the thanksgiving with prayer; Bakbukiah, the second among his brethren; and Abda the son of Shammua, the son of Galal, the son of Jeduthun. 18 All the Levites in (L)the holy city were two hundred and eighty-four.
19 Moreover the gatekeepers, Akkub, Talmon, and their brethren who kept the gates, were one hundred and seventy-two.
20 And the rest of Israel, of the priests and Levites, were in all the cities of Judah, everyone in his inheritance. 21 (M)But the Nethinim dwelt in Ophel. And Ziha and Gishpa were over the Nethinim.
22 Also the overseer of the Levites at Jerusalem was Uzzi the son of Bani, the son of Hashabiah, the son of Mattaniah, the son of Micha, of the sons of Asaph, the singers in charge of the [e]service of the [f]house of God. 23 For (N)it was the king’s command concerning them that a [g]certain portion should be for the singers, a quota day by day. 24 Pethahiah the son of Meshezabel, of the children of (O)Zerah the son of Judah, was (P)the[h] king’s deputy in all matters concerning the people.
The People Dwelling Outside Jerusalem
25 And as for the villages with their fields, some of the children of Judah dwelt in (Q)Kirjath Arba and its villages, Dibon and its villages, Jekabzeel and its villages; 26 in Jeshua, Moladah, Beth Pelet, 27 Hazar Shual, and Beersheba and its villages; 28 in Ziklag and Meconah and its villages; 29 in En Rimmon, Zorah, Jarmuth, 30 Zanoah, Adullam, and their villages; in Lachish and its fields; in Azekah and its villages. They dwelt from Beersheba to the Valley of Hinnom.
31 Also the children of Benjamin from Geba dwelt in Michmash, Aija, and Bethel, and their villages; 32 in Anathoth, Nob, Ananiah; 33 in Hazor, Ramah, Gittaim; 34 in Hadid, Zeboim, Neballat; 35 in Lod, Ono, and (R)the Valley of Craftsmen. 36 Some of the Judean divisions of Levites were in Benjamin.

The Leaders in Jerusalem
11 Now the leaders of the people (A)lived in Jerusalem. And the rest of the people (B)cast lots to bring one out of ten to live in Jerusalem (C)the holy city, while nine out of ten[a] remained in the other towns. 2 And the people blessed all the men (D)who willingly offered to live in Jerusalem.
3 (E)These are the chiefs of the province who lived in Jerusalem; but in the towns of Judah (F)everyone lived on his property in their towns: Israel, the priests, the Levites, (G)the temple servants, (H)and the descendants of Solomon's servants. 4 And in Jerusalem lived certain of the sons of Judah and of the sons of Benjamin. Of the sons of Judah: Athaiah the son of Uzziah, son of Zechariah, son of Amariah, son of Shephatiah, son of Mahalalel, of the sons of (I)Perez; 5 and Maaseiah the son of Baruch, son of Col-hozeh, son of Hazaiah, son of Adaiah, son of Joiarib, son of Zechariah, son of the Shilonite. 6 All the sons of Perez who lived in Jerusalem were 468 valiant men.
7 And these are the sons of Benjamin: Sallu the son of Meshullam, son of Joed, son of Pedaiah, son of Kolaiah, son of Maaseiah, son of Ithiel, son of Jeshaiah, 8 and his brothers, men of valor, 928.[b] 9 Joel the son of Zichri was their overseer; and Judah the son of Hassenuah was second over the city.
10 Of the priests: Jedaiah the son of Joiarib, Jachin, 11 Seraiah the son of Hilkiah, son of Meshullam, son of Zadok, son of Meraioth, son of Ahitub, ruler of the house of God, 12 and their brothers who did the work of the house, 822; and Adaiah the son of Jeroham, son of Pelaliah, son of Amzi, son of Zechariah, son of Pashhur, son of Malchijah, 13 and his brothers, heads of fathers' houses, 242; and Amashsai, the son of Azarel, son of Ahzai, son of Meshillemoth, son of Immer, 14 and their brothers, mighty men of valor, 128; their overseer was Zabdiel the son of Haggedolim.
15 And of the Levites: Shemaiah the son of Hasshub, son of Azrikam, son of Hashabiah, son of Bunni; 16 and Shabbethai and (J)Jozabad, of the chiefs of the Levites, who were over (K)the outside work of the house of God; 17 and (L)Mattaniah the son of Mica, son of Zabdi, son of Asaph, who was the leader of the praise,[c] who gave thanks, and Bakbukiah, the second among his brothers; and Abda the son of Shammua, son of Galal, son of Jeduthun. 18 All the Levites in (M)the holy city were 284.
19 The gatekeepers, Akkub, Talmon and their brothers, who kept watch at the gates, were 172. 20 And the rest of Israel, and of the priests and the Levites, were in all the towns of Judah, (N)every one in his inheritance. 21 (O)But the temple servants lived on Ophel; and Ziha and Gishpa were over the temple servants.
22 The overseer of the Levites in Jerusalem was Uzzi the son of Bani, son of Hashabiah, son of Mattaniah, son of Mica, of the sons of Asaph, the singers, over the work of the house of God. 23 (P)For there was a command from the king concerning them, and a fixed provision for the singers, (Q)as every day required. 24 And Pethahiah the son of Meshezabel, of the sons of Zerah the son of Judah, was at the king's side[d] in all matters concerning the people.
Villages Outside Jerusalem
25 And as for the villages, with their fields, some of the people of Judah lived in (R)Kiriath-arba and its villages, and in Dibon and its villages, and in Jekabzeel and its villages, 26 and in Jeshua and in Moladah and Beth-pelet, 27 in Hazar-shual, in Beersheba and its villages, 28 in Ziklag, in Meconah and its villages, 29 in En-rimmon, in Zorah, in Jarmuth, 30 Zanoah, Adullam, and their villages, Lachish and its fields, and Azekah and its villages. So they encamped from Beersheba to (S)the Valley of Hinnom. 31 The people of Benjamin also lived from Geba onward, at Michmash, Aija, Bethel and its villages, 32 Anathoth, Nob, Ananiah, 33 Hazor, Ramah, Gittaim, 34 Hadid, Zeboim, Neballat, 35 Lod, and (T)Ono, the valley of craftsmen. 36 And certain divisions of the Levites in Judah were assigned to Benjamin.
