(A)And the first inhabitants who dwelt in their possessions in their cities were Israelites, priests, Levites, and (B)the Nethinim.

23 Now therefore, you are (A)cursed, and none of you shall be freed from being slaves—woodcutters and water carriers for the house of my God.”

24 So they answered Joshua and said, “Because your servants were clearly told that the Lord your God (B)commanded His servant Moses to give you all the land, and to destroy all the inhabitants of the land from before you; therefore (C)we were very much afraid for our lives because of you, and have done this thing. 25 And now, here we are, (D)in your hands; do with us as it seems good and right to do to us.” 26 So he did to them, and delivered them out of the hand of the children of Israel, so that they did not kill them. 27 And that day Joshua made them (E)woodcutters and water carriers for the congregation and for the altar of the Lord, (F)in the place which He would choose, even to this day.

“Speak to the children of Israel, and say to them: (A)‘When a man [a]consecrates by a vow certain persons to the Lord, according to your [b]valuation, if your valuation is of a male from twenty years old up to sixty years old, then your valuation shall be fifty shekels of silver, (B)according to the shekel of the sanctuary. If it is a female, then your valuation shall be thirty shekels; and if from five years old up to twenty years old, then your valuation for a male shall be twenty shekels, and for a female ten shekels; and if from a month old up to five years old, then your valuation for a male shall be five shekels of silver, and for a female your valuation shall be three shekels of silver; and if from sixty years old and above, if it is a male, then your valuation shall be fifteen shekels, and for a female ten shekels.

‘But if he is too poor to pay your valuation, then he shall present himself before the priest, and the priest shall set a value for (C)him; according to the ability of him who vowed, the priest shall value him.
