Jesus Heals a Leper

8 When Jesus came down from the mountain, large crowds followed him. ² Just then, a leper came to him and bowed down to him, saying, “Lord, if you are willing, you can make me clean.”

³ Jesus stretched out his hand and touched him. “I am willing,” he said. “Be clean.” Immediately he was healed of his leprosy. ⁴ Jesus said to him, “See that you tell no one. Instead, go, show yourself to the priest and offer the gift that Moses commanded, as a testimony to them.”

A Believing Centurion

⁵ When he entered Capernaum, a centurion came to him and pleaded with him, ⁶ “Lord, my servant is lying at home paralyzed and suffering terribly.”

⁷ Jesus said to him, “I will come and heal him.”

⁸ The centurion answered, “Lord, I am not worthy for you to come under my roof. But only say the word, and my servant will be healed. ⁹ For I am also a man under authority, with soldiers under me. I say to this one, ‘Go,’ and he goes; and to another, ‘Come,’ and he comes; and to my servant, ‘Do this,’ and he does it.”

¹⁰ When Jesus heard this, he marveled. He said to those who were following him, “Amen I tell you: I have not found such great faith in anyone in Israel. ¹¹ I tell you that many will come from the east and the west and will recline at the table with Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob in the kingdom of heaven. ¹² But the children of the kingdom will be thrown out into the outer darkness, where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.”

¹³ Jesus said to the centurion, “Go. Let it be done for you as you have believed.” And his servant was healed at that very hour.

Jesus Heals Many

¹⁴ When Jesus came into Peter’s house, he saw Peter’s mother-in-law sick in bed with a fever. ¹⁵ He touched her hand, and the fever left her. She got up and began to serve him. ¹⁶ When evening came, they brought to him many who were demon-possessed. He drove out the spirits with a word and healed all who were sick. ¹⁷ This was to fulfill what was spoken through Isaiah the prophet: “He took up our weaknesses and carried away our diseases.”^[a]

Follow Jesus

¹⁸ When Jesus saw a large crowd gathering around him, he gave orders to go over to the other shore.

¹⁹ Then an expert in the law came and said to him, “Teacher, I will follow you wherever you go.”

²⁰ Jesus said to him, “Foxes have holes, and birds of the air have nests, but the Son of Man has nowhere to lay his head.”

²¹ Another of his disciples said to him, “Lord, first let me go and bury my father.”

²² But Jesus told him, “Follow me, and let the dead bury their own dead.”

Jesus Calms the Storm

²³ When he got into a boat, his disciples followed him. ²⁴ Suddenly a terrible storm came up on the sea, so that their boat was covered by the waves. But Jesus was sleeping. ²⁵ They went and woke him, saying, “Lord, save us! We’re going to die!”

²⁶ He said to them, “Why are you afraid, you of little faith?” Then he got up, rebuked the wind and the sea, and there was a complete calm.

²⁷ The men were amazed, saying, “What kind of a man is this? Even the wind and the sea obey him!”

Two Demon-Possessed Men and a Herd of Pigs

²⁸ When he arrived at the other side, in the region of the Gergesenes, two demon-possessed men coming from the tombs met him there. They were very dangerous, so that nobody could pass that way. ²⁹ Suddenly they cried out, “What do we have to do with you, Son of God? Have you come here to torment us before the time?” ³⁰ There was a large herd of pigs feeding some distance away from them. ³¹ The demons begged him, “If you drive us out, send us into the herd of pigs.”

³² He told them, “Go!”

So the demons came out of the men and went into the pigs. Immediately the whole herd of pigs rushed down the steep bank into the sea and drowned in the water. ³³ Those who were feeding the pigs fled and went into the town. They reported everything, including what had happened to the demon-possessed men. ³⁴ Then the entire town came out to meet Jesus. When they saw him, they begged him to leave their region.

Jesus Forgives Sins

9 Jesus got into a boat, crossed over, and came to his own town. ² There people brought to him a man who was paralyzed, lying on a stretcher. When Jesus saw their faith, he said to the paralyzed man, “Take heart, son! Your sins are forgiven.”

³ Then some of the experts in the law said among themselves, “This fellow is blaspheming!”

⁴ Since Jesus knew their thoughts, he said, “Why are you thinking evil in your hearts? ⁵ Which is easier: to say, ‘Your sins are forgiven,’ or to say, ‘Get up and walk’? ⁶ But so that you may know that the Son of Man has authority on earth to forgive sins,” he then said to the paralyzed man, “Get up, take your stretcher, and go home.”

⁷ The man got up and went home. ⁸ When the crowd saw this, they were filled with awe and glorified God, who had given such authority to men.

Calling of Matthew

⁹ As Jesus went on from there, he saw a man named Matthew sitting in the tax collector’s booth. He said to him, “Follow me.” Matthew got up and followed him.

¹⁰ As Jesus was reclining at the table in Matthew’s house, many tax collectors and sinners were actually there too, eating with Jesus and his disciples. ¹¹ When the Pharisees saw this, they said to his disciples, “Why does your teacher eat with tax collectors and sinners?”

¹² When Jesus heard this, he said to them, “The healthy do not need a physician, but the sick do. ¹³ Go and learn what this means: ‘I desire mercy, and not sacrifice.’^[b] In fact, I did not come to call the righteous, but sinners.”

A Question About Fasting

¹⁴ Then John’s disciples came to him and said, “Why do we and the Pharisees fast often, but your disciples do not fast at all?”

¹⁵ Jesus said to them, “Can the attendants of the bridegroom mourn while the bridegroom is with them? But the days will come when the bridegroom will be taken away from them, and then they will fast. ¹⁶ No one puts a piece of unshrunk cloth on an old garment, because the patch would tear away from the garment, and the hole would be made even worse. ¹⁷ And people do not pour new wine into old wineskins. If they did, the skins would burst, the wine would be spilled, and the skins would be ruined. Instead they pour new wine into fresh wineskins. By doing that, both are preserved.”

The Daughter of Jairus

¹⁸ As he was saying these things to them, there was a ruler who came, bowed down to him, and said, “My daughter has just died. But come, place your hand on her, and she will live.”

¹⁹ Jesus got up and followed him, as did his disciples. ²⁰ Just then, a woman who had been suffering from chronic bleeding for twelve years came up from behind and touched the fringe of his garment. ²¹ For she had been saying to herself, “If I just touch his garment, I will be healed.”

²² When Jesus turned around and saw her, he said, “Take heart, daughter! Your faith has healed you.” And the woman was healed from that moment.

²³ When Jesus came into the ruler’s house and saw the flute players and the noisy crowd, ²⁴ he said to them, “Go away, for the girl is not dead but is sleeping.”

But they laughed at him.

²⁵ When the crowd was sent out of the house, Jesus went in, took the girl by the hand, and she was raised. ²⁶ News of this went out through the entire region.

Two Blind Men

²⁷ As Jesus left that place, two blind men followed him, calling out, “Have mercy on us, Son of David!”

²⁸ When he entered the house, the blind men came to him. Jesus said to them, “Do you believe that I am able to do this?”

They told him, “Yes, Lord.”

²⁹ Then he touched their eyes and said, “According to your faith let it be done for you.” ³⁰ And their eyes were opened. Then Jesus warned them emphatically, “See to it that no one learns about this.” ³¹ But they went out and spread the word about him throughout that entire region.

Jesus Heals a Mute Man

³² Just as they were leaving, people brought to him a demon-possessed man who could not talk. ³³ After the demon was driven out, the mute man spoke. The crowds were amazed and said, “Nothing like this has ever been seen in Israel!”

³⁴ But the Pharisees said, “He drives out demons by the ruler of demons.”

³⁵ Jesus traveled through all the towns and villages, teaching in their synagogues, preaching the gospel of the kingdom, and healing every disease and every sickness.

Pray for Workers

³⁶ When he saw the crowds, he was moved with compassion for them, because they were troubled and downcast, like sheep without a shepherd. ³⁷ Then he said to his disciples, “The harvest is plentiful, but the workers are few. ³⁸ Therefore pray that the Lord of the harvest will send out workers into his harvest.”
