Jezi resevwa vizit maj yo

    L ap tankou yon bèje nan tèt Izrayèl, pèp mwen an.”(A)

Ewòd rele maj yo sou kote pou l chache konnen ki premye fwa yo te wè zetwal la. Apre yo fin pale, Ewòd voye maj yo ale Bètleyèm. Epi li di yo: “Al pran bon jan enfòmasyon sou ti pitit la, lè nou jwenn li n a fè m konnen, paske mwen menm tou m ta vle adore l.”

Lè maj yo fin tande sa Ewòd di a, y al fè wout yo. Apre sa, zetwal yo te wè lè yo te an Oryan an reparèt, li kondui yo jouktan l rive sou kote pitit la te ye a. 10 Se pa ti kontan yo te kontan lè yo te wè zetwal la parèt.

11 Maj yo antre anndan kay la, yo wè pitit la ak manman li, Mari. Yo mete ajenou epi yo adore li. Apre sa, yo louvri valiz yo epi yo fè pitit la kado: lò, lansan, ak lami. 12 Men, kòm Bondye te avèti maj yo nan yon rèv pou yo pa retounen bò kote Ewòd ankò, yo pran yon lòt chemen pou retounen nan peyi yo.

Jozèf ak Mari mennen Jezi nan peyi Ejip

13 Touswit apre maj yo fin pati, yon anj Senyè a te parèt devan Jozèf nan yon rèv. Rete nan peyi Ejip jouktan mwen di w lè pou w retounen.”

14 Jozèf pran manman an ak tout pitit la, li pati pandan lannuit la pou ale an Ejip. 15 Yo rete an Ejip jouktan Ewòd mouri. Vwayaj an Ejip la se yon aksyon ki fè nou konprann pi byen pwofesi ki di: “Mwen rele pitit gason m nan pou l soti kite peyi Ejip.”(B)

Ewòd touye tout bebe gason nan Bètleyèm

16 Lè Ewòd reyalize maj yo te fè l yon move kou, se pa ti fache l te fache. Li pase lòd pou yo touye tout ti gason soti nan zewo pou rive dezan nan Bètleyèm ak nan tout zòn ozalantou l yo.

Rachèl ap kriye pou pitit li yo.
    Li refize tout konsolasyon.
    Paske pitit li yo mouri.”(C)

Jozèf ak Mari retounen nan peyi yo

19 Apre lanmò Ewòd, yon anj Senyè a parèt devan Jozèf nan yon rèv nan peyi Ejip. 20 Li di l: “Leve! Pran pitit la ak manman l, retounen nan peyi Izrayèl. Moun ki te vle touye l yo gen tan mouri.”

21 Konsa, Jozèf pran ti pitit la ak manman l, yo retounen nan peyi Izrayèl. 23 Li t al rete nan yon ti vil yo rele Nazarèt. Sa fè nou konprann pi byen sa pwofèt yo te di a: “Y a rele li moun Nazarèt.”[a]

The Visit of the Magi

Now when Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judea in the days of [a]Herod the king (Herod the Great), [b]magi (wise men) from the east came to Jerusalem, asking, “Where is He who has been born King of the Jews? For we have seen His star [c]in the east and have come to worship Him.”(A) When Herod the king heard this, he was disturbed, and all Jerusalem with him. So he called together all the chief priests and [d]scribes of the people and [anxiously] asked them where the Christ (the Messiah, the Anointed) was to be born. They replied to him, “In Bethlehem of Judea, for this is what has been written by the prophet [Micah]:

And you, Bethlehem, in the land of Judah,
are not in any way least among the leaders of Judah;
For from you shall come a Ruler
Who will shepherd My people Israel.’”(B)

Then Herod secretly sent for the magi and learned from them [e]the [exact] time the star [had first] appeared. Then he sent them to Bethlehem, saying, “Go and search carefully for the Child; and when you have found Him, report to me, so that I too may come and worship Him.” After hearing the king, they went their way; and behold, the star, which they had seen in the east, went on before them [continually leading the way] until it came and stood over the place where the young Child was. 10 When they saw the star, they rejoiced exceedingly with great joy. 11 And after entering the house, they saw the Child with Mary His mother; and they fell down and worshiped Him. Then, after opening their treasure chests, they presented to Him gifts [fit for a king, gifts] of gold, frankincense, and myrrh. 12 And having been warned [by God] in a dream not to go back to Herod, the magi left for their own country by another way.

The Flight to Egypt

13 Now when they had gone, an angel of the Lord appeared to Joseph in a dream and said, “Get up! Take the Child and His mother and flee to Egypt, and remain there until I tell you; for Herod intends to search for the Child in order to destroy Him.”

14 So Joseph got up and took the Child and His mother while it was still night, and left for Egypt. 15 He remained there until the death of Herod. This was to fulfill what the Lord had spoken by the prophet [Hosea]: “Out of Egypt I called My Son.”(C)

Herod Slaughters the Babies

16 Then Herod, when he realized that he had been tricked by the magi, was extremely angry, and he sent [soldiers] and put to death all the male children in Bethlehem and in all that area who were two years old and under, according to the date which he had learned from the magi. 17 Then what had been spoken through Jeremiah the prophet was fulfilled:

18
A voice was heard in [f]Ramah,
Weeping and great mourning,
[g]Rachel weeping for her children;
She refused to be comforted,
Because they were no more.”(D)

19 But when [h]Herod died, an angel of the Lord appeared in a dream to Joseph in Egypt, and said, 20 “Get up! Take the Child and His mother, and go to the land of Israel; for those who sought the Child’s life are dead.” 21 Then Joseph got up, and took the Child and His mother, and came into the land of Israel. 22 But when he heard that Archelaus was ruling over Judea [i]in place of his father Herod [the Great], he was afraid to go there. Then being warned by God in a dream, he left for the region of Galilee, 23 and went and settled in a city called Nazareth. This was to fulfill what was spoken through the prophets: “He shall be called a [j]Nazarene.”

Here, her grief over the slaughter of babies by Herod parallels the grief of Israel when they were conquered and deported by the Babylonians. The image is that of Rachel weeping for the children of Israel from her grave. Matthew takes Jeremiah’s words, which originally referred to grief over Babylonian captivity, and applies them to Herod’s slaughter of the babies.

The Visit of the Magi

Now after Jesus was (A)born in Bethlehem of Judea in the days of (B)Herod the king, behold, [a]magi from the east arrived in Jerusalem, saying, “Where is He who has been born (C)King of the Jews? For we saw (D)His star in the east and have come to worship Him.” When Herod the king heard this, he was troubled, and all Jerusalem with him. And gathering together all the chief priests and scribes of the people, he inquired of them where the [b]Messiah was to be born. They said to him, “(E)In Bethlehem of Judea; for this is what has been written [c]by [d]the prophet:

(F)And you, Bethlehem, land of Judah,
Are by no means least among the leaders of Judah;
For from you will come forth a Ruler
Who will (G)shepherd My people Israel.’”

Then Herod secretly called for the magi and determined from them the exact [e]time (H)the star appeared. And he sent them to Bethlehem and said, “Go and search carefully for the Child; and when you have found Him, report to me, so that I too may come and worship Him.” After hearing the king, they went on their way; and behold, the star, which they had seen in the east, went on ahead of them until it came to a stop over the place where the Child was to be found. 10 When they saw the star, they rejoiced exceedingly with great joy. 11 And after they came into the house, they saw the Child with (I)His mother Mary; and they fell down and [f](J)worshiped Him. Then they opened their treasures and presented to Him gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh. 12 And after being (K)warned by God (L)in a dream not to return to Herod, the magi left for their own country by another way.

The Escape to Egypt

13 Now when they had gone, behold, an (M)angel of the Lord *(N)appeared to Joseph in a dream and said, “Get up! Take the Child and His mother and flee to Egypt, and stay there until I tell you; for Herod is going to search for the Child to kill Him.”

14 So [g]Joseph got up and took the Child and His mother while it was still night, and left for Egypt. 15 He [h]stayed there until the death of Herod; this happened so that what had been spoken by the Lord through [i]the prophet would be fulfilled: “(O)Out of Egypt I called (P)My Son.”

Herod Slaughters Babies

16 Then when Herod saw that he had been tricked by (Q)the magi, he became very enraged, and sent men and (R)killed all the boys who were in Bethlehem and all its vicinity [j]who were two years old or under, according to the time which he had determined from the magi. 17 Then what had been spoken through Jeremiah the prophet was fulfilled:

18 (S)A voice was heard in Ramah,
Weeping and great mourning,
Rachel weeping for her children;
And she refused to be comforted,
Because they were no more.”

19 But when Herod died, behold, an angel of the Lord *(T)appeared in a dream to Joseph in Egypt, and said, 20 “Get up, take the Child and His mother, and go to the land of Israel; for those who sought the Child’s life are dead.” 21 So [k]Joseph got up, took the Child and His mother, and came into the land of Israel. 22 But when he heard that Archelaus was reigning over Judea in place of his father Herod, he was afraid to go there. Then after being (U)warned by God in a dream, he left for the regions of Galilee, 23 and came and settled in a city called (V)Nazareth. This happened so that what was spoken through the prophets would be fulfilled: “He will be called a (W)Nazarene.”
