How to Fast

¹⁶ “Whenever you fast, don’t be sad-faced like the hypocrites. For they make their faces unattractive^[a](A) so their fasting is obvious to people. I assure you: They’ve got their reward!

²⁵ And whenever you stand^(A) praying, if you have anything against anyone, forgive^(B) him, so that your Father^(C) in heaven^(D) will also forgive^(E) you your wrongdoing.

Woe to the Self-Satisfied

¹¹ The Pharisee took his stand^[a](A) and was praying like this: ‘God, I thank You that I’m not like other people^[b] —greedy,^(B) unrighteous,^(C) adulterers,^(D) or even like this tax collector.
