Salt and Light^(A)

¹³^(B)“You are like salt for the whole human race. But if salt loses its saltiness, there is no way to make it salty again. It has become worthless, so it is thrown out and people trample on it.

¹⁴^(C)“You are like light for the whole world. A city built on a hill cannot be hid. ¹⁵^(D)No one lights a lamp and puts it under a bowl; instead it is put on the lampstand, where it gives light for everyone in the house.

¹³“You are the salt of the earth, ^(A)but if salt has lost its taste, how shall its saltiness be restored? It is no longer good for anything except to be thrown out and trampled under people's feet.

¹⁴^(B)“You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hidden. ¹⁵^(C)Nor do people light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on a stand, and it gives light to all in the house.
