³⁴ There they offered Jesus wine to drink, mixed with gall;^(A) but after tasting it, he refused to drink it.

²³ Then they offered him wine mixed with myrrh,^(A) but he did not take it.

The Death of Jesus^(A)

²⁸ Later, knowing that everything had now been finished,^(B) and so that Scripture would be fulfilled,^(C) Jesus said, “I am thirsty.” ²⁹ A jar of wine vinegar^(D) was there, so they soaked a sponge in it, put the sponge on a stalk of the hyssop plant, and lifted it to Jesus’ lips. ³⁰ When he had received the drink, Jesus said, “It is finished.”^(E) With that, he bowed his head and gave up his spirit.
