³³ They came to a place called Golgotha (which means “the place of the skull”).^{(A) 34} There they offered Jesus wine to drink, mixed with gall;^(B) but after tasting it, he refused to drink it. ³⁵ When they had crucified him, they divided up his clothes by casting lots.^{(C) 36} And sitting down, they kept watch^(D) over him there. ³⁷ Above his head they placed the written charge against him: this is jesus, the king of the jews.

³⁸ Two rebels were crucified with him,^(E) one on his right and one on his left. ³⁹ Those who passed by hurled insults at him, shaking their heads^{(F) 40} and saying, “You who are going to destroy the temple and build it in three days,^(G) save yourself!^(H) Come down from the cross, if you are the Son of God!”^{(I) 41} In the same way the chief priests, the teachers of the law and the elders mocked him. ⁴² “He saved others,” they said, “but he can’t save himself! He’s the king of Israel!^(J) Let him come down now from the cross, and we will believe^(K) in him. ⁴³ He trusts in God. Let God rescue him^(L) now if he wants him, for he said, ‘I am the Son of God.’” ⁴⁴ In the same way the rebels who were crucified with him also heaped insults on him.

²² They brought Jesus to the place called Golgotha (which means “the place of the skull”). ²³ Then they offered him wine mixed with myrrh,^(A) but he did not take it. ²⁴ And they crucified him. Dividing up his clothes, they cast lots^(B) to see what each would get.

²⁵ It was nine in the morning when they crucified him. ²⁶ The written notice of the charge against him read: the king of the jews.^(C)

²⁷ They crucified two rebels with him, one on his right and one on his left. ^{[28] [a] 29} Those who passed by hurled insults at him, shaking their heads^(D) and saying, “So! You who are going to destroy the temple and build it in three days,^{(E) 30} come down from the cross and save yourself!” ³¹ In the same way the chief priests and the teachers of the law mocked him^(F) among themselves. “He saved others,” they said, “but he can’t save himself! ³² Let this Messiah,^(G) this king of Israel,^(H) come down now from the cross, that we may see and believe.” Those crucified with him also heaped insults on him.

³³ When they came to the place called the Skull, they crucified him there, along with the criminals—one on his right, the other on his left. ³⁴ Jesus said, “Father,^(A) forgive them, for they do not know what they are doing.”^[a](B) And they divided up his clothes by casting lots.^(C)

³⁵ The people stood watching, and the rulers even sneered at him.^(D) They said, “He saved others; let him save himself if he is God’s Messiah, the Chosen One.”^(E)

³⁶ The soldiers also came up and mocked him.^(F) They offered him wine vinegar^{(G) 37} and said, “If you are the king of the Jews,^(H) save yourself.”

³⁸ There was a written notice above him, which read: this is the king of the jews.^(I)

³⁹ One of the criminals who hung there hurled insults at him: “Aren’t you the Messiah? Save yourself and us!”^(J)

⁴⁰ But the other criminal rebuked him. “Don’t you fear God,” he said, “since you are under the same sentence? ⁴¹ We are punished justly, for we are getting what our deeds deserve. But this man has done nothing wrong.”^(K)

⁴² Then he said, “Jesus, remember me when you come into your kingdom.^[b]”^(L)

⁴³ Jesus answered him, “Truly I tell you, today you will be with me in paradise.”^(M)
