Jesus Prays in Gethsemane

^36 (A)Then Jesus went with them ^(B)to a place called Gethsemane, and he said to his disciples, “Sit here, while I go over there and pray.” ³⁷ And taking with him ^(C)Peter and ^(D)the two sons of Zebedee, he began to be sorrowful and troubled. ³⁸ Then he said to them, ^(E)“My soul is very sorrowful, even to death; remain here, and ^(F)watch^[a] with me.” ³⁹ And going a little farther he fell on his face ^(G)and prayed, saying, “My Father, if it be possible, let ^(H)this cup pass from me; ^(I)nevertheless, not as I will, but as you will.” ⁴⁰ And he came to the disciples and found them sleeping. And he said to Peter, “So, could you not watch with me one hour? ^41 (J)Watch and ^(K)pray that you ^(L)may not enter into temptation. The spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak.” ⁴² Again, for the second time, he went away and prayed, “My Father, if this cannot pass unless I drink it, ^(M)your will be done.” ⁴³ And again he came and found them sleeping, for ^(N)their eyes were heavy. ⁴⁴ So, leaving them again, he went away and prayed for ^(O)the third time, saying the same words again. ⁴⁵ Then he came to the disciples and said to them, “Sleep and take your rest later on.^[b] See, ^(P)the hour is at hand, and ^(Q)the Son of Man is betrayed into the hands of sinners. ⁴⁶ Rise, let us be going; see, my betrayer is at hand.”

Betrayal and Arrest of Jesus

^47 (R)While he was still speaking, ^(S)Judas came, one of the twelve, and with him a great crowd with swords and clubs, from the chief priests and the elders of the people. ⁴⁸ Now the betrayer had given them a sign, saying, “The one I will kiss is the man; seize him.” ⁴⁹ And he came up to Jesus at once and said, “Greetings, ^(T)Rabbi!” And he kissed him. ⁵⁰ Jesus said to him, ^(U)“Friend, ^(V)do what you came to do.”^[c] Then they came up and laid hands on Jesus and seized him. ⁵¹ And behold, one of those who were with Jesus stretched out his hand and drew his ^(W)sword and struck the servant^[d] of the high priest and cut off his ear. ⁵² Then Jesus said to him, “Put your sword back into its place. For ^(X)all who take the sword will perish by the sword. ^53 (Y)Do you think that I cannot appeal to my Father, and he will at once send me ^(Z)more than twelve ^(AA)legions of angels? ^54 (AB)But how then should the Scriptures be fulfilled, that it must be so?” ⁵⁵ At that hour Jesus said to the crowds, “Have you come out as against a robber, with swords and clubs to capture me? Day after day ^(AC)I sat in the temple ^(AD)teaching, and you did not seize me. ⁵⁶ But ^(AE)all this has taken place that the Scriptures of the prophets might be fulfilled.” ^(AF)Then all the disciples left him and fled.

Jesus Prays in Gethsemane

^32 (A)And they went ^(B)to a place called Gethsemane. Remove ^(K)this cup from me. ^(L)Yet not what I will, but what you will.” ³⁷ And he came and found them sleeping, and he said to Peter, “Simon, are you asleep? Could you not watch one hour? ^38 (M)Watch and ^(N)pray that you may not ^(O)enter into temptation. The spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak.” ³⁹ And again he went away and prayed, ^(P)saying the same words. ⁴⁰ And again he came and found them sleeping, for ^(Q)their eyes were very heavy, and ^(R)they did not know what to answer him. ⁴¹ And he came the third time and said to them, “Are you still sleeping and taking your rest? ^(S)It is enough; ^(T)the hour has come. ^(U)The Son of Man is betrayed into the hands of sinners. ⁴² Rise, let us be going; see, my betrayer is at hand.”

Betrayal and Arrest of Jesus

^43 (V)And immediately, while he was still speaking, ^(W)Judas came, one of the twelve, and with him a crowd with swords and clubs, from the chief priests and the scribes and the elders. ⁴⁴ Now the betrayer had given them a sign, saying, “The one I will kiss is the man. Seize him and lead him away under guard.” ⁴⁵ And when he came, he went up to him at once and said, ^(X)“Rabbi!” And he ^(Y)kissed him. ⁴⁶ And they laid hands on him and seized him. ⁴⁷ But one of those who stood by drew his ^(Z)sword and struck the servant^[b] of the high priest and cut off his ear. ⁴⁸ And Jesus said to them, “Have you come out as against a robber, with swords and clubs to capture me? ^49 (AA)Day after day I was with you in the temple ^(AB)teaching, and you did not seize me. But ^(AC)let the Scriptures be fulfilled.” ^50 (AD)And they all left him and fled.

A Young Man Flees

⁵¹ And a young man followed him, with nothing but ^(AE)a linen cloth about his body. And they seized him, ⁵² but he left the linen cloth and ran away naked.

^40 (A)And when he came to ^(B)the place, he said to them, ^(C)“Pray that you may not ^(D)enter into temptation.” ⁴¹ And he withdrew from them about a stone's throw, and ^(E)knelt down and prayed, ⁴² saying, ^(F)“Father, if you are willing, remove ^(G)this cup from me. ^(H)Nevertheless, not my will, but yours, be done.” ⁴³ And there appeared to him ^(I)an angel from heaven, strengthening him. ⁴⁴ And ^(J)being in agony he prayed more earnestly; and his sweat became like great drops of blood falling down to the ground.^{[a] 45} And when he rose from prayer, he came to the disciples and found them sleeping for sorrow, ⁴⁶ and he said to them, “Why are you sleeping? Rise and ^(K)pray that you may not enter into temptation.”

Betrayal and Arrest of Jesus

^47 (L)While he was still speaking, there came a crowd, and the man called ^(M)Judas, one of the twelve, was leading them. He drew near to Jesus to kiss him, ⁴⁸ but Jesus said to him, “Judas, would you betray the Son of Man with a kiss?” ⁴⁹ And when those who were around him saw what would follow, they said, “Lord, shall we strike ^(N)with the sword?” ⁵⁰ And one of them struck the servant^[b] of the high priest and cut off his right ear. ⁵¹ But Jesus said, “No more of this!” And he touched his ear and healed him. ⁵² Then Jesus said to the chief priests and ^(O)officers of the temple and elders, who had come out against him, “Have you come out as against a robber, with swords and clubs? ⁵³ When ^(P)I was with you day after day in the temple, you did not lay hands on me. But this is ^(Q)your hour, and ^(R)the power of darkness.”

Peter Denies Jesus

^54 (S)Then they seized him and led him away, bringing him into the high priest's house, ^(T)and Peter was following at a distance.
