Jesus Speaks about John(A)

As they were leaving, Jesus spoke to the crowds about John. “What did you go into the desert to see? Tall grass swaying in the wind? Really, what did you go to see? A man dressed in fine clothes? Those who wear fine clothes are in royal palaces.

“Really, what did you go to see? A prophet? Let me tell you that he is far more than a prophet. 10 John is the one about whom Scripture says,

‘I’m sending my messenger ahead of you
to prepare the way in front of you.’

11 “I can guarantee this truth: Of all the people ever born, no one is greater than John the Baptizer. Yet, the least important person in the kingdom of heaven is greater than John. 12 From the time of John the Baptizer until now, the kingdom of heaven has been forcefully advancing, and forceful people have been seizing it. 13 All the Prophets and Moses’ Teachings prophesied up to the time of John. 14 If you are willing to accept their message, John is the Elijah who was to come. 15 Let the person who has ears listen!

16 “How can I describe the people who are living now? They are like children who sit in the marketplaces and shout to other children,

17 ‘We played music for you,
but you didn’t dance.
We sang a funeral song,
but you didn’t show any sadness.’

18 “John came neither eating nor drinking, and people say, ‘There’s a demon in him!’ 19 The Son of Man came eating and drinking, and people say, ‘Look at him! He’s a glutton and a drunk, a friend of tax collectors and sinners!’

“Yet, wisdom is proved right by its actions.”

As they went away, Jesus began to speak to the crowds concerning John: “What did you go out (A)into the wilderness to see? (B)A reed shaken by the wind? What then did you go out to see? A man[a] dressed in soft clothing? Behold, those who wear soft clothing are in kings' houses. What then did you go out to see? (C)A prophet?[b] Yes, I tell you, and more than a prophet. 10 This is he of whom it is written,

(D)“‘Behold, I send my messenger before your face,
    who will prepare your way before you.’

11 Truly, I say to you, among those born of women there has arisen no one greater than John the Baptist. Yet the one who is least in the kingdom of heaven is greater than he. 12 (E)From the days of John the Baptist until now the kingdom of heaven has suffered violence,[c] and the violent take it by force. 13 (F)For all the Prophets and the Law prophesied until John, 14 and if you are willing to accept it, he is (G)Elijah who is to come. 15 (H)He who has ears to hear,[d] let him hear.

16 “But to what shall I compare this generation? It is like children sitting in the marketplaces and calling to their playmates,

17 “‘We played the flute for you, and you did not dance;
    we sang a dirge, and you did not mourn.’

18 For John came (I)neither eating (J)nor drinking, and they say, ‘He has a demon.’ 19 The Son of Man came (K)eating and drinking, and they say, ‘Look at him! A glutton and a drunkard, (L)a friend of (M)tax collectors and sinners!’ Yet wisdom is justified by her deeds.”[e]

(A)As they departed, Jesus began to say to the multitudes concerning John: “What did you go out into the wilderness to see? (B)A reed shaken by the wind? But what did you go out to see? A man clothed in soft garments? Indeed, those who wear soft clothing are in kings’ houses. But what did you go out to see? A prophet? Yes, I say to you, (C)and more than a prophet. 10 For this is he of whom it is written:

Who will prepare Your way before You.’

11 “Assuredly, I say to you, among those born of women there has not risen one greater than John the Baptist; but he who is least in the kingdom of heaven is greater than he. 12 (E)And from the days of John the Baptist until now the kingdom of heaven suffers violence, and the violent take it by force. 13 (F)For all the prophets and the law prophesied until John. 14 And if you are willing to receive it, he is (G)Elijah who is to come. 15 (H)He who has ears to hear, let him hear!

16 (I)“But to what shall I liken this generation? It is like children sitting in the marketplaces and calling to their companions, 17 and saying:

‘We played the flute for you,
And you did not dance;
We mourned to you,
And you did not [a]lament.’

18 For John came neither eating nor drinking, and they say, ‘He has a demon.’ 19 The Son of Man came eating and drinking, and they say, ‘Look, a glutton and a [b]winebibber, (J)a friend of tax collectors and sinners!’ (K)But wisdom is justified by her [c]children.”
