Betrayal and Arrest of Jesus

47 (A)While he was still speaking, (B)Judas came, one of the twelve, and with him a great crowd with swords and clubs, from the chief priests and the elders of the people. 48 Now the betrayer had given them a sign, saying, “The one I will kiss is the man; seize him.” 49 And he came up to Jesus at once and said, “Greetings, (C)Rabbi!” And he kissed him. 50 Jesus said to him, (D)“Friend, (E)do what you came to do.”[a] Then they came up and laid hands on Jesus and seized him. 51 And behold, one of those who were with Jesus stretched out his hand and drew his (F)sword and struck the servant[b] of the high priest and cut off his ear. 52 Then Jesus said to him, “Put your sword back into its place. For (G)all who take the sword will perish by the sword. 53 (H)Do you think that I cannot appeal to my Father, and he will at once send me (I)more than twelve (J)legions of angels? 54 (K)But how then should the Scriptures be fulfilled, that it must be so?” 55 At that hour Jesus said to the crowds, “Have you come out as against a robber, with swords and clubs to capture me? Day after day (L)I sat in the temple (M)teaching, and you did not seize me. 56 But (N)all this has taken place that the Scriptures of the prophets might be fulfilled.” (O)Then all the disciples left him and fled.

Jesus Before Caiaphas and the Council

57 (P)Then (Q)those who had seized Jesus led him to (R)Caiaphas the high priest, where the scribes and the elders had gathered. 58 And (S)Peter was following him at a distance, as far as (T)the courtyard of the high priest, and going inside he sat with (U)the guards to see the end. 59 Now the chief priests and the whole council[c] (V)were seeking false testimony against Jesus that they might put him to death, 60 but they found none, (W)though many false witnesses came forward. At last (X)two came forward 61 and said, “This man said, (Y)‘I am able to (Z)destroy the temple of God, and to rebuild it in three days.’” 62 And the high priest stood up and said, “Have you no answer to make? What is it that these men testify against you?”[d] 63 (AA)But Jesus remained silent. (AB)And the high priest said to him, (AC)“I adjure you by (AD)the living God, (AE)tell us if you are (AF)the Christ, (AG)the Son of God.” 64 Jesus said to him, (AH)“You have said so. But I tell you, from now on (AI)you will see the Son of Man (AJ)seated at the right hand of Power and (AK)coming on the clouds of heaven.” 65 Then the high priest (AL)tore his robes and said, (AM)“He has uttered blasphemy. What further witnesses do we need? You have now heard his blasphemy. 66 What is your judgment?” They answered, (AN)“He deserves death.” 67 Then (AO)they spit in his face (AP)and (AQ)struck him. And some slapped him, 68 saying, “Prophesy to us, you (AR)Christ! Who is it that struck you?”

Peter Denies Jesus

69 (AS)Now Peter was sitting outside (AT)in the courtyard. And a servant girl came up to him and said, “You also were with Jesus the Galilean.” 70 But he denied it before them all, saying, “I do not know what you mean.” 71 And when he went out to the entrance, another servant girl saw him, and she said to the bystanders, “This man was with Jesus (AU)of Nazareth.” 72 And again he denied it with an oath: “I do not know the man.” 73 After a little while the bystanders came up and said to Peter, “Certainly you too are one of them, for (AV)your accent betrays you.” 74 Then he began to invoke a curse on himself and to swear, “I do not know the man.” And immediately the rooster crowed. 75 And Peter remembered the saying of Jesus, (AW)“Before the rooster crows, you will (AX)deny me three times.” And he went out and wept bitterly.

Jesus Delivered to Pilate

27 (AY)When morning came, all the chief priests and the elders of the people (AZ)took counsel against Jesus to put him to death. And they bound him and (BA)led him away and (BB)delivered him over to (BC)Pilate the governor.

Judas Hangs Himself

Then when (BD)Judas, his betrayer, saw that Jesus[e] was condemned, (BE)he changed his mind and brought back (BF)the thirty pieces of silver to the chief priests and the elders, saying, “I have sinned by betraying innocent blood.” They said, “What is that to us? (BG)See to it yourself.” And throwing down the pieces of silver into the temple, (BH)he departed, and he went and hanged himself. But the chief priests, taking the pieces of silver, said, “It is not lawful to put them into (BI)the treasury, since it is blood money.” So they took counsel and bought with them the potter's field as a burial place for strangers. Therefore (BJ)that field has been called the Field of Blood (BK)to this day. (BL)Then was fulfilled what had been spoken by the prophet Jeremiah, saying, (BM)“And they took the thirty pieces of silver, the price of him on whom a price had been set by some of the sons of Israel, 10 and they gave them for the potter's field, as the Lord directed me.”

Jesus Before Pilate

11 (BN)Now Jesus stood before the governor, and the governor asked him, “Are you (BO)the King of the Jews?” Jesus said, (BP)“You have said so.” 12 (BQ)But when he was accused by the chief priests and elders, he gave no answer. 13 Then Pilate said to him, (BR)“Do you not hear how many things they testify against you?” 14 But he gave him no answer, not even to a single charge, so that the governor was greatly amazed.

The Crowd Chooses Barabbas

15 (BS)Now at the feast the governor was accustomed to release for the crowd any one prisoner whom they wanted. 16 And they had then a notorious prisoner called Barabbas. 17 So when they had gathered, Pilate said to them, “Whom do you want me to release for you: Barabbas, or (BT)Jesus who is called Christ?” 18 For he knew that it was out (BU)of envy that they had delivered him up. 19 Besides, while he was sitting on (BV)the judgment seat, his wife sent word to him, “Have nothing to do with (BW)that righteous man, for I have suffered much because of him today (BX)in a dream.” 20 Now the chief priests and the elders persuaded the crowd to (BY)ask for Barabbas and destroy Jesus. 21 The governor again said to them, “Which of the two do you want me to release for you?” And they said, “Barabbas.” 22 Pilate said to them, “Then what shall I do with Jesus who is called Christ?” (BZ)They all said, “Let him be crucified!” 23 And he said, “Why? (CA)What evil has he done?” But they shouted all the more, “Let him be crucified!”

Pilate Delivers Jesus to Be Crucified

24 So when Pilate saw that he was gaining nothing, but rather that (CB)a riot was beginning, he took water and (CC)washed his hands before the crowd, saying, “I am innocent of (CD)this man's blood;[f] (CE)see to it yourselves.” 25 And all the people answered, (CF)“His blood be on us and (CG)on our children!” 26 Then he released for them Barabbas, and having (CH)scourged[g] Jesus, delivered him to be crucified.

Jesus Arrested(A)

47 While he was still speaking, Judas,(B) one of the Twelve, arrived. With him was a large crowd armed with swords and clubs, sent from the chief priests and the elders of the people. 48 Now the betrayer had arranged a signal with them: “The one I kiss is the man; arrest him.” 49 Going at once to Jesus, Judas said, “Greetings, Rabbi!”(C) and kissed him.

50 Jesus replied, “Do what you came for, friend.”[a](D)

Then the men stepped forward, seized Jesus and arrested him. 51 With that, one of Jesus’ companions reached for his sword,(E) drew it out and struck the servant of the high priest, cutting off his ear.(F)

52 “Put your sword back in its place,” Jesus said to him, “for all who draw the sword will die by the sword.(G) 53 Do you think I cannot call on my Father, and he will at once put at my disposal more than twelve legions of angels?(H) 54 But how then would the Scriptures be fulfilled(I) that say it must happen in this way?”

55 In that hour Jesus said to the crowd, “Am I leading a rebellion, that you have come out with swords and clubs to capture me? Every day I sat in the temple courts teaching,(J) and you did not arrest me. 56 But this has all taken place that the writings of the prophets might be fulfilled.”(K) Then all the disciples deserted him and fled.

Jesus Before the Sanhedrin(L)

57 Those who had arrested Jesus took him to Caiaphas(M) the high priest, where the teachers of the law and the elders had assembled. 58 But Peter followed him at a distance, right up to the courtyard of the high priest.(N) He entered and sat down with the guards(O) to see the outcome.

59 The chief priests and the whole Sanhedrin(P) were looking for false evidence against Jesus so that they could put him to death. 60 But they did not find any, though many false witnesses(Q) came forward.

Finally two(R) came forward 61 and declared, “This fellow said, ‘I am able to destroy the temple of God and rebuild it in three days.’”(S)

62 Then the high priest stood up and said to Jesus, “Are you not going to answer? What is this testimony that these men are bringing against you?” 63 But Jesus remained silent.(T)

The high priest said to him, “I charge you under oath(U) by the living God:(V) Tell us if you are the Messiah,(W) the Son of God.”(X)

64 “You have said so,”(Y) Jesus replied. “But I say to all of you: From now on you will see the Son of Man sitting at the right hand of the Mighty One(Z) and coming on the clouds of heaven.”[b](AA)

65 Then the high priest tore his clothes(AB) and said, “He has spoken blasphemy! Why do we need any more witnesses? Look, now you have heard the blasphemy. 66 What do you think?”

“He is worthy of death,”(AC) they answered.

67 Then they spit in his face and struck him with their fists.(AD) Others slapped him 68 and said, “Prophesy to us, Messiah. Who hit you?”(AE)

Peter Disowns Jesus(AF)

69 Now Peter was sitting out in the courtyard, and a servant girl came to him. “You also were with Jesus of Galilee,” she said.

70 But he denied it before them all. “I don’t know what you’re talking about,” he said.

71 Then he went out to the gateway, where another servant girl saw him and said to the people there, “This fellow was with Jesus of Nazareth.”

72 He denied it again, with an oath: “I don’t know the man!”

73 After a little while, those standing there went up to Peter and said, “Surely you are one of them; your accent gives you away.”

74 Then he began to call down curses, and he swore to them, “I don’t know the man!”

Immediately a rooster crowed. 75 Then Peter remembered the word Jesus had spoken: “Before the rooster crows, you will disown me three times.”(AG) And he went outside and wept bitterly.

Judas Hangs Himself

27 Early in the morning, all the chief priests and the elders of the people made their plans how to have Jesus executed.(AH) So they bound him, led him away and handed him over(AI) to Pilate the governor.(AJ)

When Judas, who had betrayed him,(AK) saw that Jesus was condemned, he was seized with remorse and returned the thirty pieces of silver(AL) to the chief priests and the elders. “I have sinned,” he said, “for I have betrayed innocent blood.”

“What is that to us?” they replied. “That’s your responsibility.”(AM)

So Judas threw the money into the temple(AN) and left. Then he went away and hanged himself.(AO)

The chief priests picked up the coins and said, “It is against the law to put this into the treasury, since it is blood money.” So they decided to use the money to buy the potter’s field as a burial place for foreigners. That is why it has been called the Field of Blood(AP) to this day. Then what was spoken by Jeremiah the prophet was fulfilled:(AQ) “They took the thirty pieces of silver, the price set on him by the people of Israel, 10 and they used them to buy the potter’s field, as the Lord commanded me.”[c](AR)

Jesus Before Pilate(AS)

11 Meanwhile Jesus stood before the governor, and the governor asked him, “Are you the king of the Jews?”(AT)

“You have said so,” Jesus replied.

12 When he was accused by the chief priests and the elders, he gave no answer.(AU) 13 Then Pilate asked him, “Don’t you hear the testimony they are bringing against you?”(AV) 14 But Jesus made no reply,(AW) not even to a single charge—to the great amazement of the governor.

15 Now it was the governor’s custom at the festival to release a prisoner(AX) chosen by the crowd. 16 At that time they had a well-known prisoner whose name was Jesus[d] Barabbas. 17 So when the crowd had gathered, Pilate asked them, “Which one do you want me to release to you: Jesus Barabbas, or Jesus who is called the Messiah?”(AY) 18 For he knew it was out of self-interest that they had handed Jesus over to him.

19 While Pilate was sitting on the judge’s seat,(AZ) his wife sent him this message: “Don’t have anything to do with that innocent(BA) man, for I have suffered a great deal today in a dream(BB) because of him.”

20 But the chief priests and the elders persuaded the crowd to ask for Barabbas and to have Jesus executed.(BC)

21 “Which of the two do you want me to release to you?” asked the governor.

“Barabbas,” they answered.

22 “What shall I do, then, with Jesus who is called the Messiah?”(BD) Pilate asked.

They all answered, “Crucify him!”

23 “Why? What crime has he committed?” asked Pilate.

But they shouted all the louder, “Crucify him!”

24 When Pilate saw that he was getting nowhere, but that instead an uproar(BE) was starting, he took water and washed his hands(BF) in front of the crowd. “I am innocent of this man’s blood,”(BG) he said. “It is your responsibility!”(BH)

25 All the people answered, “His blood is on us and on our children!”(BI)

26 Then he released Barabbas to them. But he had Jesus flogged,(BJ) and handed him over to be crucified.

Betrayal and Arrest of Jesus

43 (A)And immediately, while he was still speaking, (B)Judas came, one of the twelve, and with him a crowd with swords and clubs, from the chief priests and the scribes and the elders. 44 Now the betrayer had given them a sign, saying, “The one I will kiss is the man. Seize him and lead him away under guard.” 45 And when he came, he went up to him at once and said, (C)“Rabbi!” And he (D)kissed him. 46 And they laid hands on him and seized him. 47 But one of those who stood by drew his (E)sword and struck the servant[a] of the high priest and cut off his ear. 48 And Jesus said to them, “Have you come out as against a robber, with swords and clubs to capture me? 49 (F)Day after day I was with you in the temple (G)teaching, and you did not seize me. But (H)let the Scriptures be fulfilled.” 50 (I)And they all left him and fled.

A Young Man Flees

51 And a young man followed him, with nothing but (J)a linen cloth about his body. And they seized him, 52 but he left the linen cloth and ran away naked.

Jesus Before the Council

53 (K)And (L)they led Jesus to the high priest. And all the chief priests and the elders and the scribes came together. 54 (M)And (N)Peter had followed him at a distance, (O)right into (P)the courtyard of the high priest. And he was sitting with (Q)the guards and (R)warming himself at the fire. 55 Now the chief priests and the whole council[b] were seeking testimony against Jesus to put him to death, but they found none. 56 (S)For many bore false witness against him, but their testimony (T)did not agree. 57 And some stood up and bore false witness against him, saying, 58 (U)“We heard him say, (V)‘I will destroy this temple (W)that is made with hands, and in three days I will build another, (X)not made with hands.’” 59 Yet even about this their testimony did not agree. 60 And the high priest stood up in the midst and asked Jesus, “Have you no answer to make? What is it that these men testify against you?”[c] 61 But (Y)he remained silent and made no answer. (Z)Again the high priest asked him, “Are you (AA)the Christ, the Son of (AB)the Blessed?” 62 And Jesus said, “I am, and (AC)you will see the Son of Man (AD)seated at the right hand of Power, and (AE)coming with the clouds of heaven.” 63 And the high priest (AF)tore his garments and said, “What further witnesses do we need? 64 You have heard (AG)his blasphemy. What is your decision?” And they (AH)all condemned him as (AI)deserving death. 65 (AJ)And some began (AK)to spit on him and (AL)to cover his face and to strike him, saying to him, “Prophesy!” And the guards received him (AM)with blows.

Peter Denies Jesus

66 (AN)And as Peter was below in the courtyard, one of the servant girls of the high priest came, 67 and seeing Peter (AO)warming himself, she looked at him and said, “You also were with the Nazarene, Jesus.” 68 But he denied it, saying, “I neither know nor understand what you mean.” And he went out into the gateway[d] and (AP)the rooster crowed.[e] 69 And the servant girl saw him and began again to say to the bystanders, “This man is one of them.” 70 But again he denied it. And after a little while the bystanders again said to Peter, “Certainly you are one of them, for you are a Galilean.” 71 But he began to invoke a curse on himself and to swear, “I do not know this man of whom you speak.” 72 And immediately the rooster crowed (AQ)a second time. And Peter remembered how Jesus had said to him, (AR)“Before the rooster crows twice, you will (AS)deny me three times.” And he broke down and wept.[f]

Jesus Delivered to Pilate

15 (AT)And as soon as it was morning, the chief priests (AU)held a consultation with the elders and scribes and the whole council. And (AV)they bound Jesus and (AW)led him away and (AX)delivered him over to (AY)Pilate. (AZ)And Pilate asked him, (BA)“Are you the King of the Jews?” And he answered him, (BB)“You have said so.” And the chief priests accused him of many things. And Pilate again asked him, (BC)“Have you no answer to make? See how many charges they bring against you.” But Jesus (BD)made no further answer, so that Pilate was amazed.

Pilate Delivers Jesus to Be Crucified

(BE)Now at the feast he used to release for them one prisoner for whom they asked. And among the rebels in prison, who had (BF)committed murder (BG)in the insurrection, there was a man called Barabbas. And the crowd came up and began to ask Pilate to do as he usually did for them. And he answered them, saying, “Do you want me to release for you the King of the Jews?” 10 For he perceived that (BH)it was out of envy that the chief priests had delivered him up. 11 But the chief priests stirred up the crowd to have him release for them Barabbas instead. 12 And Pilate again said to them, “Then what shall I do with (BI)the man you call the King of the Jews?” 13 And they cried out again, “Crucify him.” 14 And Pilate said to them, “Why? (BJ)What evil has he done?” But they shouted all the more, “Crucify him.” 15 So Pilate, wishing to satisfy the crowd, released for them Barabbas, and having (BK)scourged[g] Jesus, he delivered him to be crucified.

Jesus Arrested(A)

43 Just as he was speaking, Judas,(B) one of the Twelve, appeared. With him was a crowd armed with swords and clubs, sent from the chief priests, the teachers of the law, and the elders.

44 Now the betrayer had arranged a signal with them: “The one I kiss is the man; arrest him and lead him away under guard.” 45 Going at once to Jesus, Judas said, “Rabbi!”(C) and kissed him. 46 The men seized Jesus and arrested him. 47 Then one of those standing near drew his sword and struck the servant of the high priest, cutting off his ear.

48 “Am I leading a rebellion,” said Jesus, “that you have come out with swords and clubs to capture me? 49 Every day I was with you, teaching in the temple courts,(D) and you did not arrest me. But the Scriptures must be fulfilled.”(E) 50 Then everyone deserted him and fled.(F)

51 A young man, wearing nothing but a linen garment, was following Jesus. When they seized him, 52 he fled naked, leaving his garment behind.

Jesus Before the Sanhedrin(G)(H)

53 They took Jesus to the high priest, and all the chief priests, the elders and the teachers of the law came together. 54 Peter followed him at a distance, right into the courtyard of the high priest.(I) There he sat with the guards and warmed himself at the fire.(J)

55 The chief priests and the whole Sanhedrin(K) were looking for evidence against Jesus so that they could put him to death, but they did not find any. 56 Many testified falsely against him, but their statements did not agree.

57 Then some stood up and gave this false testimony against him: 58 “We heard him say, ‘I will destroy this temple made with human hands and in three days will build another,(L) not made with hands.’” 59 Yet even then their testimony did not agree.

60 Then the high priest stood up before them and asked Jesus, “Are you not going to answer? What is this testimony that these men are bringing against you?” 61 But Jesus remained silent and gave no answer.(M)

Again the high priest asked him, “Are you the Messiah, the Son of the Blessed One?”(N)

62 “I am,” said Jesus. “And you will see the Son of Man sitting at the right hand of the Mighty One and coming on the clouds of heaven.”(O)

63 The high priest tore his clothes.(P) “Why do we need any more witnesses?” he asked. 64 “You have heard the blasphemy. What do you think?”

They all condemned him as worthy of death.(Q) 65 Then some began to spit at him; they blindfolded him, struck him with their fists, and said, “Prophesy!” And the guards took him and beat him.(R)

Peter Disowns Jesus(S)

66 While Peter was below in the courtyard,(T) one of the servant girls of the high priest came by. 67 When she saw Peter warming himself,(U) she looked closely at him.

“You also were with that Nazarene, Jesus,”(V) she said.

68 But he denied it. “I don’t know or understand what you’re talking about,”(W) he said, and went out into the entryway.[a]

69 When the servant girl saw him there, she said again to those standing around, “This fellow is one of them.” 70 Again he denied it.(X)

After a little while, those standing near said to Peter, “Surely you are one of them, for you are a Galilean.”(Y)

71 He began to call down curses, and he swore to them, “I don’t know this man you’re talking about.”(Z)

72 Immediately the rooster crowed the second time.[b] Then Peter remembered the word Jesus had spoken to him: “Before the rooster crows twice[c] you will disown me three times.”(AA) And he broke down and wept.

Jesus Before Pilate(AB)

15 Very early in the morning, the chief priests, with the elders, the teachers of the law(AC) and the whole Sanhedrin,(AD) made their plans. So they bound Jesus, led him away and handed him over to Pilate.(AE)

“Are you the king of the Jews?”(AF) asked Pilate.

“You have said so,” Jesus replied.

The chief priests accused him of many things. So again Pilate asked him, “Aren’t you going to answer? See how many things they are accusing you of.”

But Jesus still made no reply,(AG) and Pilate was amazed.

Now it was the custom at the festival to release a prisoner whom the people requested. A man called Barabbas was in prison with the insurrectionists who had committed murder in the uprising. The crowd came up and asked Pilate to do for them what he usually did.

“Do you want me to release to you the king of the Jews?”(AH) asked Pilate, 10 knowing it was out of self-interest that the chief priests had handed Jesus over to him. 11 But the chief priests stirred up the crowd to have Pilate release Barabbas(AI) instead.

12 “What shall I do, then, with the one you call the king of the Jews?” Pilate asked them.

13 “Crucify him!” they shouted.

14 “Why? What crime has he committed?” asked Pilate.

But they shouted all the louder, “Crucify him!”

15 Wanting to satisfy the crowd, Pilate released Barabbas to them. He had Jesus flogged,(AJ) and handed him over to be crucified.

Betrayal and Arrest of Jesus

47 (A)While he was still speaking, there came a crowd, and the man called (B)Judas, one of the twelve, was leading them. He drew near to Jesus to kiss him, 48 but Jesus said to him, “Judas, would you betray the Son of Man with a kiss?” 49 And when those who were around him saw what would follow, they said, “Lord, shall we strike (C)with the sword?” 50 And one of them struck the servant[a] of the high priest and cut off his right ear. 51 But Jesus said, “No more of this!” And he touched his ear and healed him. 52 Then Jesus said to the chief priests and (D)officers of the temple and elders, who had come out against him, “Have you come out as against a robber, with swords and clubs? 53 When (E)I was with you day after day in the temple, you did not lay hands on me. But this is (F)your hour, and (G)the power of darkness.”

Peter Denies Jesus

54 (H)Then they seized him and led him away, bringing him into the high priest's house, (I)and Peter was following at a distance. 55 (J)And when they had kindled a fire in the middle of (K)the courtyard and sat down together, Peter sat down among them. 56 Then a servant girl, seeing him as he sat in the light and looking closely at him, said, “This man also was with him.” 57 But he denied it, saying, “Woman, I do not know him.” 58 And a little later someone else saw him and said, “You also are one of them.” But Peter said, “Man, I am not.” 59 And after an interval of about an hour still another (L)insisted, saying, “Certainly this man also was with him, for he too is a Galilean.” 60 But Peter said, “Man, I do not know what you are talking about.” And immediately, while he was still speaking, the rooster crowed. 61 And the Lord turned and (M)looked at Peter. And Peter remembered the saying of the Lord, how he had said to him, (N)“Before the rooster crows today, you will (O)deny me three times.” 62 And he went out and wept bitterly.

Jesus Is Mocked

63 (P)Now the men who were holding Jesus in custody were mocking him as they beat him. 64 (Q)They also blindfolded him and kept asking him, (R)“Prophesy! (S)Who is it that struck you?” 65 And they said many other things against him, (T)blaspheming him.

Jesus Before the Council

66 (U)When day came, (V)the assembly of the elders of the people gathered together, both chief priests and scribes. And they led him away to their (W)council, and they (X)said, 67 (Y)“If you are (Z)the Christ, tell us.” But he said to them, “If I tell you, you will not believe, 68 and if I ask you, you will not answer. 69 But from now on the Son of Man shall be seated (AA)at the right hand of the power of God.” 70 So they all said, “Are you (AB)the Son of God, then?” And he said to them, (AC)“You say that I am.” 71 Then they said, “What further testimony do we need? We have heard it ourselves from his own lips.”

Jesus Before Pilate

23 (AD)Then the whole company of them arose and brought him before Pilate. And they began to accuse him, saying, “We found this man (AE)misleading our nation and (AF)forbidding us to give tribute to (AG)Caesar, and saying that he himself is Christ, (AH)a king.” (AI)And Pilate asked him, (AJ)“Are you the King of the Jews?” And he answered him, (AK)“You have said so.” Then Pilate said to the chief priests and the crowds, (AL)“I find no guilt in this man.” But they were urgent, saying, “He stirs up the people, teaching throughout all Judea, (AM)from Galilee even to this place.”

Jesus Before Herod

When Pilate heard this, he asked whether the man was a Galilean. And when he learned that he belonged to (AN)Herod's jurisdiction, he sent him over to Herod, who was himself in Jerusalem at that time. When Herod saw Jesus, he was very glad, (AO)for he had long desired to see him, (AP)because he had heard about him, and he was hoping (AQ)to see some sign done by him. So he questioned him at some length, but he made no answer. 10 The chief priests and the scribes stood by, vehemently accusing him. 11 And Herod with his soldiers (AR)treated him with contempt and (AS)mocked him. Then, (AT)arraying him in splendid clothing, he sent him back to Pilate. 12 And (AU)Herod and Pilate became friends with each other that very day, for before this they had been at enmity with each other.

13 Pilate then called together the chief priests and (AV)the rulers and the people, 14 and said to them, “You brought me this man (AW)as one who was misleading the people. And (AX)after examining him before you, behold, I (AY)did not find this man guilty of any of your charges against him. 15 Neither did Herod, for (AZ)he sent him back to us. Look, nothing deserving death has been done by him. 16 (BA)I will therefore punish and release him.”[b]

Pilate Delivers Jesus to Be Crucified

18 (BB)But they all cried out together, (BC)“Away with this man, and release to us Barabbas”— 19 a man who had been thrown into prison for an insurrection started in the city and (BD)for murder. 20 Pilate addressed them once more, desiring to release Jesus, 21 but they kept shouting, “Crucify, crucify him!” 22 A third time he said to them, “Why? (BE)What evil has he done? (BF)I have found in him no guilt deserving death. (BG)I will therefore punish and release him.” 23 But they were urgent, demanding with loud cries that he should be crucified. And their voices prevailed. 24 So Pilate decided that their demand should be granted. 25 He released the man who had been thrown into prison (BH)for insurrection and murder, for whom they asked, (BI)but he delivered Jesus over to their will.

  2. Luke 23:16 Here, or after verse 19, some manuscripts add verse 17: Now he was obliged to release one man to them at the festival

Jesus Arrested(A)

47 While he was still speaking a crowd came up, and the man who was called Judas, one of the Twelve, was leading them. He approached Jesus to kiss him, 48 but Jesus asked him, “Judas, are you betraying the Son of Man with a kiss?”

49 When Jesus’ followers saw what was going to happen, they said, “Lord, should we strike with our swords?”(B) 50 And one of them struck the servant of the high priest, cutting off his right ear.

51 But Jesus answered, “No more of this!” And he touched the man’s ear and healed him.

52 Then Jesus said to the chief priests, the officers of the temple guard,(C) and the elders, who had come for him, “Am I leading a rebellion, that you have come with swords and clubs? 53 Every day I was with you in the temple courts,(D) and you did not lay a hand on me. But this is your hour(E)—when darkness reigns.”(F)

Peter Disowns Jesus(G)

54 Then seizing him, they led him away and took him into the house of the high priest.(H) Peter followed at a distance.(I) 55 And when some there had kindled a fire in the middle of the courtyard and had sat down together, Peter sat down with them. 56 A servant girl saw him seated there in the firelight. She looked closely at him and said, “This man was with him.”

57 But he denied it. “Woman, I don’t know him,” he said.

58 A little later someone else saw him and said, “You also are one of them.”

“Man, I am not!” Peter replied.

59 About an hour later another asserted, “Certainly this fellow was with him, for he is a Galilean.”(J)

60 Peter replied, “Man, I don’t know what you’re talking about!” Just as he was speaking, the rooster crowed. 61 The Lord(K) turned and looked straight at Peter. Then Peter remembered the word the Lord had spoken to him: “Before the rooster crows today, you will disown me three times.”(L) 62 And he went outside and wept bitterly.

The Guards Mock Jesus(M)

63 The men who were guarding Jesus began mocking and beating him. 64 They blindfolded him and demanded, “Prophesy! Who hit you?” 65 And they said many other insulting things to him.(N)

Jesus Before Pilate and Herod(O)(P)(Q)

66 At daybreak the council(R) of the elders of the people, both the chief priests and the teachers of the law, met together,(S) and Jesus was led before them. 67 “If you are the Messiah,” they said, “tell us.”

Jesus answered, “If I tell you, you will not believe me, 68 and if I asked you, you would not answer.(T) 69 But from now on, the Son of Man will be seated at the right hand of the mighty God.”(U)

70 They all asked, “Are you then the Son of God?”(V)

He replied, “You say that I am.”(W)

71 Then they said, “Why do we need any more testimony? We have heard it from his own lips.”

23 Then the whole assembly rose and led him off to Pilate.(X) And they began to accuse him, saying, “We have found this man subverting our nation.(Y) He opposes payment of taxes to Caesar(Z) and claims to be Messiah, a king.”(AA)

So Pilate asked Jesus, “Are you the king of the Jews?”

“You have said so,” Jesus replied.

Then Pilate announced to the chief priests and the crowd, “I find no basis for a charge against this man.”(AB)

But they insisted, “He stirs up the people all over Judea by his teaching. He started in Galilee(AC) and has come all the way here.”

On hearing this, Pilate asked if the man was a Galilean.(AD) When he learned that Jesus was under Herod’s jurisdiction, he sent him to Herod,(AE) who was also in Jerusalem at that time.

When Herod saw Jesus, he was greatly pleased, because for a long time he had been wanting to see him.(AF) From what he had heard about him, he hoped to see him perform a sign of some sort. He plied him with many questions, but Jesus gave him no answer.(AG) 10 The chief priests and the teachers of the law were standing there, vehemently accusing him. 11 Then Herod and his soldiers ridiculed and mocked him. Dressing him in an elegant robe,(AH) they sent him back to Pilate. 12 That day Herod and Pilate became friends(AI)—before this they had been enemies.

13 Pilate called together the chief priests, the rulers and the people, 14 and said to them, “You brought me this man as one who was inciting the people to rebellion. I have examined him in your presence and have found no basis for your charges against him.(AJ) 15 Neither has Herod, for he sent him back to us; as you can see, he has done nothing to deserve death. 16 Therefore, I will punish him(AK) and then release him.” [17] [a]

18 But the whole crowd shouted, “Away with this man! Release Barabbas to us!”(AL) 19 (Barabbas had been thrown into prison for an insurrection in the city, and for murder.)

20 Wanting to release Jesus, Pilate appealed to them again. 21 But they kept shouting, “Crucify him! Crucify him!”

22 For the third time he spoke to them: “Why? What crime has this man committed? I have found in him no grounds for the death penalty. Therefore I will have him punished and then release him.”(AM)

23 But with loud shouts they insistently demanded that he be crucified, and their shouts prevailed. 24 So Pilate decided to grant their demand. 25 He released the man who had been thrown into prison for insurrection and murder, the one they asked for, and surrendered Jesus to their will.

Footnotes

  1. Luke 23:17 Some manuscripts include here words similar to Matt. 27:15 and Mark 15:6.

Now Judas, who betrayed him, also knew (A)the place, for (B)Jesus often met there with his disciples. (C)So Judas, having procured a band of soldiers and some officers from the chief priests and the Pharisees, went there with lanterns and torches and weapons. Then Jesus, (D)knowing all that would happen to him, came forward and said to them, (E)“Whom do you seek?” They answered him, “Jesus of Nazareth.” Jesus said to them, “I am he.”[a] Judas, who betrayed him, was standing with them. (F)When Jesus[b] said to them, “I am he,” they drew back and fell to the ground. So he asked them again, (G)“Whom do you seek?” And they said, “Jesus of Nazareth.” Jesus answered, “I told you that I am he. So, if you seek me, let these men go.” (H)This was to fulfill the word that he had spoken: “Of those whom you gave me I have lost not one.” 10 Then Simon Peter, (I)having a sword, drew it and struck the high priest's servant[c] and cut off his right ear. (The servant's name was Malchus.) 11 So Jesus said to Peter, “Put your sword into its sheath; (J)shall I not drink the cup that the Father has given me?”

Jesus Faces Annas and Caiaphas

12 So the band of soldiers and their captain and the officers of the Jews[d] arrested Jesus and bound him. 13 First they (K)led him to (L)Annas, for he was the father-in-law of (M)Caiaphas, who was high priest that year. 14 It was Caiaphas who had advised the Jews (N)that it would be expedient that one man should die for the people.

Peter Denies Jesus

15 (O)Simon Peter followed Jesus, and so did another disciple. Since that disciple was known to the high priest, he entered with Jesus into the courtyard of the high priest, 16 (P)but Peter stood outside at the door. So the other disciple, who was known to the high priest, went out and spoke to the servant girl who kept watch at the door, and brought Peter in. 17 (Q)The servant girl at the door said to Peter, “You also are not one of this man's disciples, are you?” He said, “I am not.” 18 Now the servants[e] and officers had made a charcoal fire, because it was cold, and they were standing and warming themselves. (R)Peter also was with them, standing and warming himself.

The High Priest Questions Jesus

19 (S)The high priest then questioned Jesus about his disciples and his teaching. 20 Jesus answered him, “I have spoken (T)openly (U)to the world. I have always taught in synagogues and in the temple, where all Jews come together. (V)I have said nothing in secret. 21 Why do you ask me? Ask those who have heard me what I said to them; they know what I said.” 22 When he had said these things, one of the officers standing by struck Jesus with his hand, saying, (W)“Is that how you answer the high priest?” 23 Jesus answered him, “If what I said is wrong, bear witness about the wrong; but if what I said is right, why do you strike me?” 24 (X)Annas then sent him bound to (Y)Caiaphas the high priest.

Peter Denies Jesus Again

25 (Z)Now Simon Peter was standing and warming himself. So they said to him, “You also are not one of his disciples, are you?” He denied it and said, “I am not.” 26 One of the servants of the high priest, a relative of (AA)the man whose ear Peter had cut off, asked, “Did I not see you (AB)in the garden with him?” 27 Peter again denied it, and (AC)at once a rooster crowed.

Jesus Before Pilate

28 (AD)Then they led Jesus (AE)from the house of Caiaphas to (AF)the governor's headquarters.[f] It was early morning. They themselves did not enter the governor's headquarters, (AG)so that they would not be defiled, (AH)but could eat the Passover. 29 (AI)So Pilate went outside to them and said, “What accusation do you bring against this man?” 30 They answered him, “If this man were not doing evil, we would not have delivered him over to you.” 31 Pilate said to them, (AJ)“Take him yourselves and judge him by your own law.” The Jews said to him, “It is not lawful for us to put anyone to death.” 32 (AK)This was to fulfill the word that Jesus had spoken (AL)to show by what kind of death he was going to die.

My Kingdom Is Not of This World

33 (AM)So Pilate entered his headquarters again and called Jesus and said to him, (AN)“Are you the King of the Jews?” 34 Jesus answered, “Do you say this of your own accord, or did others say it to you about me?” 35 Pilate answered, “Am I a Jew? Your own nation and the chief priests have delivered you over to me. What have you done?” 36 Jesus answered, (AO)“My kingdom (AP)is not of this world. If my kingdom were of this world, (AQ)my servants would have been fighting, that (AR)I might not be delivered over to the Jews. But my kingdom is not from the world.” 37 Then Pilate said to him, “So you are a king?” Jesus answered, (AS)“You say that I am a king. (AT)For this purpose I was born and for this purpose (AU)I have come into the world—(AV)to bear witness to the truth. (AW)Everyone who is (AX)of the truth (AY)listens to my voice.” 38 Pilate said to him, “What is truth?”

After he had said this, (AZ)he went back outside to the Jews and told them, (BA)“I find no guilt in him. 39 (BB)But you have a custom that I should release one man for you at the Passover. So do you want me to release to you the King of the Jews?” 40 They cried out again, (BC)“Not this man, but Barabbas!” Now Barabbas was a robber.[g]

Jesus Delivered to Be Crucified

19 Then Pilate took Jesus and (BD)flogged him. (BE)And the soldiers twisted together a crown of thorns and put it on his head and arrayed him in a purple robe. They came up to him, saying, “Hail, King of the Jews!” and struck him with their hands. Pilate went out again and said to them, “See, I am bringing him out to you that you may know that (BF)I find no guilt in him.” So Jesus came out, wearing (BG)the crown of thorns and the purple robe. Pilate said to them, (BH)“Behold the man!” When the chief priests and the officers saw him, they cried out, “Crucify him, crucify him!” Pilate said to them, (BI)“Take him yourselves and crucify him, for (BJ)I find no guilt in him.” The Jews[h] answered him, “We have a law, and (BK)according to that law he ought to die because (BL)he has made himself the Son of God.” When Pilate heard this statement, (BM)he was even more afraid. (BN)He entered his headquarters again and said to Jesus, (BO)“Where are you from?” But (BP)Jesus gave him no answer. 10 So Pilate said to him, “You will not speak to me? Do you not know that I have authority to release you and authority to crucify you?” 11 Jesus answered him, (BQ)“You would have no authority over me at all unless it had been given you from above. Therefore (BR)he who delivered me over to you (BS)has the greater sin.”

12 From then on (BT)Pilate sought to release him, but the Jews cried out, “If you release this man, you are not Caesar's friend. (BU)Everyone who makes himself a king opposes Caesar.” 13 So when Pilate heard these words, he brought Jesus out and sat down on (BV)the judgment seat at a place called The Stone Pavement, and in Aramaic[i] Gabbatha. 14 Now it was (BW)the day of Preparation of the Passover. It was about the sixth hour.[j] He said to the Jews, (BX)“Behold your King!” 15 They cried out, (BY)“Away with him, away with him, crucify him!” Pilate said to them, “Shall I crucify your King?” The chief priests answered, “We have no king but Caesar.”

Now Judas, who betrayed him, knew the place, because Jesus had often met there with his disciples.(A) So Judas came to the garden, guiding(B) a detachment of soldiers and some officials from the chief priests and the Pharisees.(C) They were carrying torches, lanterns and weapons.

Jesus, knowing all that was going to happen to him,(D) went out and asked them, “Who is it you want?”(E)

“Jesus of Nazareth,”(F) they replied.

“I am he,” Jesus said. (And Judas the traitor was standing there with them.) When Jesus said, “I am he,” they drew back and fell to the ground.

Again he asked them, “Who is it you want?”(G)

“Jesus of Nazareth,” they said.

Jesus answered, “I told you that I am he. If you are looking for me, then let these men go.” This happened so that the words he had spoken would be fulfilled: “I have not lost one of those you gave me.”[a](H)

10 Then Simon Peter, who had a sword, drew it and struck the high priest’s servant, cutting off his right ear. (The servant’s name was Malchus.)

11 Jesus commanded Peter, “Put your sword away! Shall I not drink the cup(I) the Father has given me?”

12 Then the detachment of soldiers with its commander and the Jewish officials(J) arrested Jesus. They bound him 13 and brought him first to Annas, who was the father-in-law of Caiaphas,(K) the high priest that year. 14 Caiaphas was the one who had advised the Jewish leaders that it would be good if one man died for the people.(L)

Peter’s First Denial(M)

15 Simon Peter and another disciple were following Jesus. Because this disciple was known to the high priest,(N) he went with Jesus into the high priest’s courtyard,(O) 16 but Peter had to wait outside at the door. The other disciple, who was known to the high priest, came back, spoke to the servant girl on duty there and brought Peter in.

17 “You aren’t one of this man’s disciples too, are you?” she asked Peter.

He replied, “I am not.”(P)

18 It was cold, and the servants and officials stood around a fire(Q) they had made to keep warm. Peter also was standing with them, warming himself.(R)

The High Priest Questions Jesus(S)

19 Meanwhile, the high priest questioned Jesus about his disciples and his teaching.

20 “I have spoken openly to the world,” Jesus replied. “I always taught in synagogues(T) or at the temple,(U) where all the Jews come together. I said nothing in secret.(V) 21 Why question me? Ask those who heard me. Surely they know what I said.”

22 When Jesus said this, one of the officials(W) nearby slapped him in the face.(X) “Is this the way you answer the high priest?” he demanded.

23 “If I said something wrong,” Jesus replied, “testify as to what is wrong. But if I spoke the truth, why did you strike me?”(Y) 24 Then Annas sent him bound to Caiaphas(Z) the high priest.

Peter’s Second and Third Denials(AA)

25 Meanwhile, Simon Peter was still standing there warming himself.(AB) So they asked him, “You aren’t one of his disciples too, are you?”

He denied it, saying, “I am not.”(AC)

26 One of the high priest’s servants, a relative of the man whose ear Peter had cut off,(AD) challenged him, “Didn’t I see you with him in the garden?”(AE) 27 Again Peter denied it, and at that moment a rooster began to crow.(AF)

Jesus Before Pilate(AG)

28 Then the Jewish leaders took Jesus from Caiaphas to the palace of the Roman governor.(AH) By now it was early morning, and to avoid ceremonial uncleanness they did not enter the palace,(AI) because they wanted to be able to eat the Passover.(AJ) 29 So Pilate came out to them and asked, “What charges are you bringing against this man?”

30 “If he were not a criminal,” they replied, “we would not have handed him over to you.”

31 Pilate said, “Take him yourselves and judge him by your own law.”

“But we have no right to execute anyone,” they objected. 32 This took place to fulfill what Jesus had said about the kind of death he was going to die.(AK)

33 Pilate then went back inside the palace,(AL) summoned Jesus and asked him, “Are you the king of the Jews?”(AM)

34 “Is that your own idea,” Jesus asked, “or did others talk to you about me?”

35 “Am I a Jew?” Pilate replied. “Your own people and chief priests handed you over to me. What is it you have done?”

36 Jesus said, “My kingdom(AN) is not of this world. If it were, my servants would fight to prevent my arrest by the Jewish leaders.(AO) But now my kingdom is from another place.”(AP)

37 “You are a king, then!” said Pilate.

Jesus answered, “You say that I am a king. In fact, the reason I was born and came into the world is to testify to the truth.(AQ) Everyone on the side of truth listens to me.”(AR)

38 “What is truth?” retorted Pilate. With this he went out again to the Jews gathered there and said, “I find no basis for a charge against him.(AS) 39 But it is your custom for me to release to you one prisoner at the time of the Passover. Do you want me to release ‘the king of the Jews’?”

40 They shouted back, “No, not him! Give us Barabbas!” Now Barabbas had taken part in an uprising.(AT)

Jesus Sentenced to Be Crucified(AU)

19 Then Pilate took Jesus and had him flogged.(AV) The soldiers twisted together a crown of thorns and put it on his head. They clothed him in a purple robe and went up to him again and again, saying, “Hail, king of the Jews!”(AW) And they slapped him in the face.(AX)

Once more Pilate came out and said to the Jews gathered there, “Look, I am bringing him out(AY) to you to let you know that I find no basis for a charge against him.”(AZ) When Jesus came out wearing the crown of thorns and the purple robe,(BA) Pilate said to them, “Here is the man!”

As soon as the chief priests and their officials saw him, they shouted, “Crucify! Crucify!”

But Pilate answered, “You take him and crucify him.(BB) As for me, I find no basis for a charge against him.”(BC)

The Jewish leaders insisted, “We have a law, and according to that law he must die,(BD) because he claimed to be the Son of God.”(BE)

When Pilate heard this, he was even more afraid, and he went back inside the palace.(BF) “Where do you come from?” he asked Jesus, but Jesus gave him no answer.(BG) 10 “Do you refuse to speak to me?” Pilate said. “Don’t you realize I have power either to free you or to crucify you?”

11 Jesus answered, “You would have no power over me if it were not given to you from above.(BH) Therefore the one who handed me over to you(BI) is guilty of a greater sin.”

12 From then on, Pilate tried to set Jesus free, but the Jewish leaders kept shouting, “If you let this man go, you are no friend of Caesar. Anyone who claims to be a king(BJ) opposes Caesar.”

13 When Pilate heard this, he brought Jesus out and sat down on the judge’s seat(BK) at a place known as the Stone Pavement (which in Aramaic(BL) is Gabbatha). 14 It was the day of Preparation(BM) of the Passover; it was about noon.(BN)

“Here is your king,”(BO) Pilate said to the Jews.

15 But they shouted, “Take him away! Take him away! Crucify him!”

“Shall I crucify your king?” Pilate asked.

“We have no king but Caesar,” the chief priests answered.
