Liknelsen om kungasonens bröllop
22 Jesus talade än en gång till dem i liknelser: 2 "Himmelriket är likt en kung som höll bröllop för sin son. 3 Han sände ut sina tjänare för att kalla de inbjudna till bröllopet, men de ville inte komma. 4 Då sände han ut andra tjänare och befallde dem att säga till de inbjudna: Jag har gjort i ordning min måltid. Mina oxar och min gödboskap är slaktade och allt är färdigt. Kom till bröllopet! 5 Men de brydde sig inte om det utan gick sin väg, en till sitt jordbruk, en annan till sina affärer. 6 De andra grep hans tjänare och misshandlade och dödade dem. 7 Då blev kungen vred och skickade ut sina trupper och lät döda mördarna och brände ner deras stad. 8 Sedan sade han till sina tjänare: Allt är klart för bröllopet, men de inbjudna var inte värdiga. 9 Gå därför till vägskälen och bjud till bröllopet alla som ni träffar på. 10 Tjänarna gick då ut på vägarna och samlade alla de mötte, både onda och goda, och bröllopssalen fylldes med gäster.
11 När kungen kom in för att se sina gäster, lade han märke till en man som inte var klädd i bröllopskläder. 12 Han sade till honom: Min vän, hur har du kommit in utan bröllopskläder? Mannen teg. 13 Då sade kungen till tjänarna: Bind honom till händer och fötter och kasta ut honom i mörkret här utanför! Där skall man gråta och skära tänder. 14 Ty många är kallade, men få är utvalda."
Skatt till kejsaren
15 Då gick fariseerna och överlade om hur de skulle kunna fälla honom för något som han sade. 16 De sände till honom sina lärjungar tillsammans med herodianerna,[a] som skulle säga: "Mästare, vi vet att du är ärlig och ger en rätt undervisning om Guds väg[b] och inte tar parti för någon utan behandlar alla lika. 17 Säg oss nu: Vad anser du? Är det tillåtet att betala skatt till kejsaren eller är det inte tillåtet?" 18 Jesus märkte deras ondska och frågade: "Varför försöker ni snärja mig, ni hycklare? 19 Visa mig det mynt som man betalar skatten med." De räckte honom en denar, 20 och han frågade dem: "Vems bild och inskrift är detta?" 21 De svarade: "Kejsarens". Då sade han till dem: "Ge då kejsaren det som tillhör kejsaren, och Gud det som tillhör Gud." 22 När de hörde detta, blev de mycket förvånade. Och de lämnade honom och gick sin väg.
De dödas uppståndelse
23 Samma dag kom det fram några sadduceer till Jesus - de påstår att det inte finns någon uppståndelse - och frågade honom: 24 "Mästare, Mose har sagt: Om någon dör barnlös, skall hans bror gifta sig med änkan och skaffa barn åt sin bror. [c] 25 Nu fanns det bland oss sju bröder. Den förste gifte sig och dog, och då han inte hade några barn, lämnade han sin hustru efter sig åt sin bror. 26 På samma sätt gick det med den andre och den tredje och till slut med alla sju. 27 Sist av alla dog hustrun. 28 Vem av de sju skall hon vara hustru till vid uppståndelsen? Alla var ju gifta med henne."
29 Jesus svarade dem: "Ni tar fel och förstår varken Skriften eller Guds makt. 30 Ty vid uppståndelsen gifter man sig inte och blir inte bortgift, utan man är som änglarna i himlen. 31 Men när det gäller de dödas uppståndelse, har ni inte läst vad Gud har sagt till er: 32 Jag är Abrahams Gud och Isaks Gud och Jakobs Gud?[d] Han är inte en Gud för döda utan för levande." 33 När folket hörde detta, häpnade de över hans undervisning.
Det viktigaste budet
34 Fariseerna hörde att Jesus hade gjort sadduceerna svarslösa och samlades kring honom. 35 En av dem, en laglärd, ville sätta honom på prov och frågade: 36 "Mästare, vilket är det största budet i lagen?" 37 Han svarade: "Du skall älska Herren din Gud av hela ditt hjärta och av hela din själ och av hela ditt förstånd. [e] 38 Detta är det största och främsta budet. 39 Sedan kommer ett som liknar det: Du skall älska din nästa som dig själv. [f] 40 På dessa två bud hänger hela lagen och profeterna."[g]
Vad anser ni om Messias?
41 Medan fariseerna var samlade, frågade Jesus dem: 42 "Vad anser ni om Messias? Vems son är han?" De svarade honom: "Davids". 43 Då sade han till dem: "Hur kan då David, driven av Anden, kalla honom Herre och säga: 44 Herren sade till min Herre:[h] Sätt dig på min högra sida, tills jag har lagt dina fiender under dina fötter.[i] 45 Om nu David kallar honom sin Herre, hur kan då Messias vara Davids son?"[j] 46 Ingen kunde svara honom ett ord, och från den dagen vågade ingen längre fråga honom.

22 And Jesus answered and spake unto them again by parables, and said,
2 The kingdom of heaven is like unto a certain king, which made a marriage for his son,
3 And sent forth his servants to call them that were bidden to the wedding: and they would not come.
4 Again, he sent forth other servants, saying, Tell them which are bidden, Behold, I have prepared my dinner: my oxen and my fatlings are killed, and all things are ready: come unto the marriage.
5 But they made light of it, and went their ways, one to his farm, another to his merchandise:
6 And the remnant took his servants, and entreated them spitefully, and slew them.
7 But when the king heard thereof, he was wroth: and he sent forth his armies, and destroyed those murderers, and burned up their city.
8 Then saith he to his servants, The wedding is ready, but they which were bidden were not worthy.
9 Go ye therefore into the highways, and as many as ye shall find, bid to the marriage.
10 So those servants went out into the highways, and gathered together all as many as they found, both bad and good: and the wedding was furnished with guests.
11 And when the king came in to see the guests, he saw there a man which had not on a wedding garment:
12 And he saith unto him, Friend, how camest thou in hither not having a wedding garment? And he was speechless.
13 Then said the king to the servants, Bind him hand and foot, and take him away, and cast him into outer darkness, there shall be weeping and gnashing of teeth.
14 For many are called, but few are chosen.
15 Then went the Pharisees, and took counsel how they might entangle him in his talk.
16 And they sent out unto him their disciples with the Herodians, saying, Master, we know that thou art true, and teachest the way of God in truth, neither carest thou for any man: for thou regardest not the person of men.
17 Tell us therefore, What thinkest thou? Is it lawful to give tribute unto Caesar, or not?
18 But Jesus perceived their wickedness, and said, Why tempt ye me, ye hypocrites?
19 Shew me the tribute money. And they brought unto him a penny.
20 And he saith unto them, Whose is this image and superscription?
21 They say unto him, Caesar's. Then saith he unto them, Render therefore unto Caesar the things which are Caesar's; and unto God the things that are God's.
22 When they had heard these words, they marvelled, and left him, and went their way.
23 The same day came to him the Sadducees, which say that there is no resurrection, and asked him,
24 Saying, Master, Moses said, If a man die, having no children, his brother shall marry his wife, and raise up seed unto his brother.
25 Now there were with us seven brethren: and the first, when he had married a wife, deceased, and, having no issue, left his wife unto his brother:
26 Likewise the second also, and the third, unto the seventh.
27 And last of all the woman died also.
28 Therefore in the resurrection whose wife shall she be of the seven? for they all had her.
29 Jesus answered and said unto them, Ye do err, not knowing the scriptures, nor the power of God.
30 For in the resurrection they neither marry, nor are given in marriage, but are as the angels of God in heaven.
31 But as touching the resurrection of the dead, have ye not read that which was spoken unto you by God, saying,
32 I am the God of Abraham, and the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob? God is not the God of the dead, but of the living.
33 And when the multitude heard this, they were astonished at his doctrine.
34 But when the Pharisees had heard that he had put the Sadducees to silence, they were gathered together.
35 Then one of them, which was a lawyer, asked him a question, tempting him, and saying,
36 Master, which is the great commandment in the law?
37 Jesus said unto him, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind.
38 This is the first and great commandment.
39 And the second is like unto it, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself.

41 While the Pharisees were gathered together, Jesus asked them,
42 Saying, What think ye of Christ? whose son is he? They say unto him, The son of David.
43 He saith unto them, How then doth David in spirit call him Lord, saying,
44 The Lord said unto my Lord, Sit thou on my right hand, till I make thine enemies thy footstool?
45 If David then call him Lord, how is he his son?
46 And no man was able to answer him a word, neither durst any man from that day forth ask him any more questions.

22 And Jesus answered (B)and spoke to them again by parables and said: 2 “The kingdom of heaven is like a certain king who arranged a marriage for his son, 3 and sent out his servants to call those who were invited to the wedding; and they were not willing to come. 4 Again, he sent out other servants, saying, ‘Tell those who are invited, “See, I have prepared my dinner; (C)my oxen and fatted cattle are killed, and all things are ready. Come to the wedding.” ’ 5 But they made light of it and went their ways, one to his own farm, another to his business. 6 And the rest seized his servants, treated them [a]spitefully, and killed them. 7 But when the king heard about it, he was furious. The Pharisees: Is It Lawful to Pay Taxes to Caesar?(K)
15 (L)Then the Pharisees went and plotted how they might entangle Him in His talk. 16 And they sent to Him their disciples with the (M)Herodians, saying, “Teacher, we know that You are true, and teach the way of God in truth; nor do You care about anyone, for You do not [c]regard the person of men. 17 Tell us, therefore, what do You think? Is it lawful to pay taxes to Caesar, or not?”
18 But Jesus [d]perceived their wickedness, and said, “Why do you test Me, you hypocrites? 19 Show Me the tax money.”
So they brought Him a denarius.
20 And He said to them, “Whose image and inscription is this?”
21 They said to Him, “Caesar’s.”
And He said to them, (N)“Render[e] therefore to Caesar the things that are (O)Caesar’s, and to God the things that are (P)God’s.” 22 When they had heard these words, they marveled, and left Him and went their way.
The Sadducees: What About the Resurrection?(Q)
23 (R)The same day the Sadducees, (S)who say there is no resurrection, came to Him and asked Him, 24 saying: “Teacher, (T)Moses said that if a man dies, having no children, his brother shall marry his wife and raise up offspring for his brother. 25 Now there were with us seven brothers. The first died after he had married, and having no offspring, left his wife to his brother. 26 Likewise the second also, and the third, even to the seventh. 27 Last of all the woman died also. 28 Therefore, in the resurrection, whose wife of the seven will she be? For they all had her.”
29 Jesus answered and said to them, “You are [f]mistaken, (U)not knowing the Scriptures nor the power of God. 30 For in the resurrection they neither marry nor are given in marriage, but (V)are like angels [g]of God in heaven. 31 But concerning the resurrection of the dead, have you not read what was spoken to you by God, saying, 32 (W)‘I am the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob’? 37 Jesus said to him, (AB)“‘You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind.’ 38 This is the first and great commandment. 39 And the second is like it: (AC)‘You shall love your neighbor as yourself.’ 40 (AD)On these two commandments hang all the Law and the Prophets.”
Jesus: How Can David Call His Descendant Lord?(AE)
41 (AF)While the Pharisees were gathered together, Jesus asked them, 42 saying, “What do you think about the Christ? Whose Son is He?”
They said to Him, “The (AG)Son of David.”
43 He said to them, “How then does David in the Spirit call Him ‘Lord,’ saying:
44 ‘The(AH) Lord said to my Lord,
“Sit at My right hand,
Till I make Your enemies Your footstool” ’?

Paying Taxes to Caesar

Sadducees Ask About the Resurrection

The Great Commandment
34 (AP)But when the Pharisees heard that he had silenced (AQ)the Sadducees, they gathered together. 35 (AR)And one of them, (AS)a lawyer, asked him a question (AT)to test him. 36 “Teacher, which is the great commandment in the Law?” 37 And he said to him, (AU)“You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind. 38 This is the great and first commandment. 39 And (AV)a second is like it: (AW)You shall love your neighbor as yourself. 40 (AX)On these two commandments depend (AY)all the Law and the Prophets.”
Whose Son Is the Christ?
41 (AZ)Now while the Pharisees (BA)were gathered together, Jesus asked them a question, 42 saying, “What do you think about (BB)the Christ? Whose son is he?” They said to him, (BC)“The son of David.” 43 He said to them, “How is it then that David, (BD)in the Spirit, calls him Lord, saying,
44 (BE)“‘The Lord said to my Lord,
“Sit at my right hand,
until I put your enemies under your feet”’?
45 If then David calls him Lord, (BF)how is he his son?” 46 (BG)And no one was able to answer him a word, (BH)nor from that day did anyone dare to ask him any more questions.
