21 Da sie nun nahe an Jerusalem kamen, gen Bethphage an den Ölberg, sandte Jesus seiner Jünger zwei

und sprach zu ihnen: Gehet hin in den Flecken, der vor euch liegt, und alsbald werdet ihr eine Eselin finden angebunden und ihr Füllen bei ihr; löset sie auf und führet sie zu mir!

Und so euch jemand etwas wird sagen, so sprecht: Der HERR bedarf ihrer; sobald wird er sie euch lassen.

Das geschah aber alles, auf daß erfüllt würde, was gesagt ist durch den Propheten, der da spricht:

"Saget der Tochter Zion: Siehe, dein König kommt zu dir sanftmütig und reitet auf einem Esel und auf einem Füllen der lastbaren Eselin."

Die Jünger gingen hin und taten, wie ihnen Jesus befohlen hatte,

und brachten die Eselin und das Füllen und legten ihre Kleider darauf und setzten ihn darauf.

Aber viel Volks breitete die Kleider auf den Weg; die andern hieben Zweige von den Bäumen und streuten sie auf den Weg.

Das Volk aber, das vorging und nachfolgte, schrie und sprach: Hosianna dem Sohn Davids! Gelobt sei, der da kommt in dem Namen des HERRN! Hosianna in der Höhe!

10 Und als er zu Jerusalem einzog, erregte sich die ganze Stadt und sprach: Wer ist der?

11 Das Volk aber sprach: Das ist der Jesus, der Prophet von Nazareth aus Galiläa.

12 Und Jesus ging zum Tempel Gottes hinein und trieb heraus alle Verkäufer und Käufer im Tempel und stieß um der Wechsler Tische und die Stühle der Taubenkrämer

13 und sprach zu ihnen: Es steht geschrieben: "Mein Haus soll ein Bethaus heißen"; ihr aber habt eine Mördergrube daraus gemacht.

14 Und es gingen zu ihm Blinde und Lahme im Tempel, und er heilte sie.

15 Da aber die Hohenpriester und Schriftgelehrten sahen die Wunder, die er tat, und die Kinder, die im Tempel schrieen und sagten: Hosianna dem Sohn Davids! wurden sie entrüstet

16 und sprachen zu ihm: Hörst du auch, was diese sagen? Jesus sprach zu ihnen: Ja! Habt ihr nie gelesen: "Aus dem Munde der Unmündigen und Säuglinge hast du Lob zugerichtet"?

17 Und er ließ sie da und ging zur Stadt hinaus gen Bethanien und blieb daselbst.

18 Als er aber des Morgens wieder in die Stadt ging, hungerte ihn;

19 und er sah einen Feigenbaum am Wege und ging hinzu und fand nichts daran denn allein Blätter und sprach zu ihm: Nun wachse auf dir hinfort nimmermehr eine Frucht! Und der Feigenbaum verdorrte alsbald.

20 Und da das die Jünger sahen, verwunderten sie sich und sprachen: Wie ist der Feigenbaum so bald verdorrt?

21 Jesus aber antwortete und sprach zu ihnen: Wahrlich ich sage euch: So ihr Glauben habt und nicht zweifelt, so werdet ihr nicht allein solches mit dem Feigenbaum tun, sondern, so ihr werdet sagen zu diesem Berge: Hebe dich auf und wirf dich ins Meer! so wird's geschehen.

22 Und alles, was ihr bittet im Gebet, so ihr glaubet, werdet ihr's empfangen.

23 Und als er in den Tempel kam, traten zu ihm, als er lehrte, die Hohenpriester und die Ältesten im Volk und sprachen: Aus was für Macht tust du das? und wer hat dir die Macht gegeben?

24 Jesus aber antwortete und sprach zu ihnen: Ich will euch auch ein Wort fragen; so ihr mir das sagt, will ich euch auch sagen aus was für Macht ich das tue:

25 Woher war die Taufe des Johannes? War sie vom Himmel oder von den Menschen? Da dachten sie bei sich selbst und sprachen: Sagen wir, sie sei vom Himmel gewesen, so wird er zu uns sagen: Warum glaubtet ihr ihm denn nicht?

26 Sagen wir aber, sie sei von Menschen gewesen, so müssen wir uns vor dem Volk fürchten; denn sie halten alle Johannes für einen Propheten.

27 Und sie antworteten Jesu und sprachen: Wir wissen's nicht. Da sprach er zu ihnen: So sage ich euch auch nicht, aus was für Macht ich das tue.

28 Was dünkt euch aber? Es hatte ein Mann zwei Söhne und ging zu dem ersten und sprach: Mein Sohn, gehe hin und arbeite heute in meinem Weinberg.

29 Er antwortete aber und sprach: Ich will's nicht tun. Darnach reute es ihn und er ging hin.

30 Und er ging zum andern und sprach gleichalso. Er antwortete aber und sprach: Herr, ja! -und ging nicht hin.

31 Welcher unter den zweien hat des Vaters Willen getan? Sie sprachen zu ihm: Der erste. Jesus sprach zu ihnen: Wahrlich ich sage euch: Die Zöllner und Huren mögen wohl eher ins Himmelreich kommen denn ihr.

32 Johannes kam zu euch und lehrte euch den rechten Weg, und ihr glaubtet ihm nicht; aber die Zöllner und Huren glaubten ihm. Und ob ihr's wohl sahet, tatet ihr dennoch nicht Buße, daß ihr ihm darnach auch geglaubt hättet.

33 Höret ein anderes Gleichnis: Es war ein Hausvater, der pflanzte einen Weinberg und führte einen Zaun darum und grub eine Kelter darin und baute einen Turm und tat ihn den Weingärtnern aus und zog über Land.

34 Da nun herbeikam die Zeit der Früchte, sandte er seine Knechte zu den Weingärtnern, daß sie seine Früchte empfingen.

35 Da nahmen die Weingärtner seine Knechte; einen stäupten sie, den andern töteten sie, den dritten steinigten sie.

36 Abermals sandte er andere Knechte, mehr denn der ersten waren; und sie taten ihnen gleichalso.

37 Darnach sandte er seinen Sohn zu ihnen und sprach: Sie werden sich vor meinem Sohn scheuen.

38 Da aber die Weingärtner den Sohn sahen, sprachen sie untereinander: Das ist der Erbe; kommt laßt uns ihn töten und sein Erbgut an uns bringen!

39 Und sie nahmen ihn und stießen ihn zum Weinberg hinaus und töteten ihn.

40 Wenn nun der Herr des Weinberges kommen wird, was wird er diesen Weingärtnern tun?

41 Sie sprachen zu ihm: Er wird die Bösewichte übel umbringen und seinen Weinberg anderen Weingärtnern austun, die ihm die Früchte zur rechten Zeit geben.

42 Jesus sprach zu ihnen: Habt ihr nie gelesen in der Schrift: "Der Stein, den die Bauleute verworfen haben, der ist zum Eckstein geworden. Von dem HERRN ist das geschehen, und es ist wunderbar vor unseren Augen"?

43 Darum sage ich euch: Das Reich Gottes wird von euch genommen und einem Volke gegeben werden, das seine Früchte bringt.

44 Und wer auf diesen Stein fällt, der wird zerschellen; auf wen aber er fällt, den wird er zermalmen.

45 Und da die Hohenpriester und Pharisäer seine Gleichnisse hörten, verstanden sie, daß er von ihnen redete.

46 Und sie trachteten darnach, wie sie ihn griffen; aber sie fürchteten sich vor dem Volk, denn es hielt ihn für einen Propheten.

22 Und Jesus antwortete und redete abermals durch Gleichnisse zu ihnen und sprach:

Das Himmelreich ist gleich einem Könige, der seinem Sohn Hochzeit machte.

Und sandte seine Knechte aus, daß sie die Gäste zur Hochzeit riefen; und sie wollten nicht kommen.

Abermals sandte er andere Knechte aus und sprach: Sagt den Gästen: Siehe, meine Mahlzeit habe ich bereitet, meine Ochsen und mein Mastvieh ist geschlachtet und alles ist bereit; kommt zur Hochzeit!

Aber sie verachteten das und gingen hin, einer auf seinen Acker, der andere zu seiner Hantierung;

etliche griffen seine Knechte, höhnten sie und töteten sie.

Da das der König hörte, ward er zornig und schickte seine Heere aus und brachte diese Mörder um und zündete ihre Stadt an.

Da sprach er zu seinen Knechten: Die Hochzeit ist zwar bereit, aber die Gäste waren's nicht wert.

Darum gehet hin auf die Straßen und ladet zur Hochzeit, wen ihr findet.

10 Und die Knechte gingen aus auf die Straßen und brachten zusammen, wen sie fanden, Böse und Gute; und die Tische wurden alle voll.

11 Da ging der König hinein, die Gäste zu besehen, und sah allda einen Menschen, der hatte kein hochzeitlich Kleid an;

12 und er sprach zu ihm: Freund, wie bist du hereingekommen und hast doch kein hochzeitlich Kleid an? Er aber verstummte.

13 Da sprach der König zu seinen Dienern: Bindet ihm Hände und Füße und werfet ihn in die Finsternis hinaus! da wird sein Heulen und Zähneklappen.

14 Denn viele sind berufen, aber wenige sind auserwählt.

15 Da gingen die Pharisäer hin und hielten einen Rat, wie sie ihn fingen in seiner Rede.

16 Und sandten zu ihm ihre Jünger samt des Herodes Dienern. Und sie sprachen: Meister, wir wissen, daß du wahrhaftig bist und lehrst den Weg Gottes recht und du fragst nach niemand; denn du achtest nicht das Ansehen der Menschen.

17 Darum sage uns, was dünkt dich: Ist's recht, daß man dem Kaiser den Zins gebe, oder nicht?

18 Da nun Jesus merkte ihre Schalkheit, sprach er: Ihr Heuchler, was versucht ihr mich?

19 Weiset mir die Zinsmünze! Und sie reichten ihm einen Groschen dar.

20 Und er sprach zu ihnen: Wes ist das Bild und die Überschrift?

21 Sie sprachen zu ihm: Des Kaisers. Da sprach er zu ihnen: So gebet dem Kaiser, was des Kaisers ist, und Gott, was Gottes ist!

22 Da sie das hörten, verwunderten sie sich und ließen ihn und gingen davon.

23 An dem Tage traten zu ihm die Sadduzäer, die da halten, es sei kein Auferstehen, und fragten ihn

24 und sprachen: Meister, Mose hat gesagt: So einer stirbt und hat nicht Kinder, so soll sein Bruder sein Weib freien und seinem Bruder Samen erwecken.

25 Nun sind bei uns gewesen sieben Brüder. Der erste freite und starb; und dieweil er nicht Samen hatte, ließ er sein Weib seinem Bruder;

26 desgleichen der andere und der dritte bis an den siebenten.

27 Zuletzt nach allen starb auch das Weib.

28 Nun in der Auferstehung, wes Weib wird sie sein unter den sieben? Sie haben sie ja alle gehabt.

29 Jesus aber antwortete und sprach zu ihnen: Ihr irrt und wisset die Schrift nicht, noch die Kraft Gottes.

30 In der Auferstehung werden sie weder freien noch sich freien lassen, sondern sie sind gleichwie die Engel Gottes im Himmel.

31 Habt ihr nicht gelesen von der Toten Auferstehung, was euch gesagt ist von Gott, der da spricht:

32 "Ich bin der Gott Abrahams und der Gott Isaaks und der Gott Jakobs"? Gott aber ist nicht ein Gott der Toten, sondern der Lebendigen.

33 Und da solches das Volk hörte, entsetzten sie sich über seine Lehre.

34 Da aber die Pharisäer hörten, wie er den Sadduzäern das Maul gestopft hatte, versammelten sie sich.

35 Und einer unter ihnen, ein Schriftgelehrter, versuchte ihn und sprach:

36 Meister, welches ist das vornehmste Gebot im Gesetz?

37 Jesus aber sprach zu ihm: "Du sollst lieben Gott, deinen HERRN, von ganzem Herzen, von ganzer Seele und von ganzem Gemüte."

38 Dies ist das vornehmste und größte Gebot.

39 Das andere aber ist ihm gleich; Du sollst deinen Nächsten lieben wie dich selbst.

40 In diesen zwei Geboten hängt das ganze Gesetz und die Propheten.

41 Da nun die Pharisäer beieinander waren, fragte sie Jesus

42 und sprach: Wie dünkt euch um Christus? wes Sohn ist er? Sie sprachen: Davids.

43 Er sprach zu ihnen: Wie nennt ihn denn David im Geist einen Herrn, da er sagt:

44 "Der HERR hat gesagt zu meinem Herrn: Setze dich zu meiner Rechten, bis daß ich lege deine Feinde zum Schemel deiner Füße"?

45 So nun David ihn einen Herrn nennt, wie ist er denn sein Sohn?

46 Und niemand konnte ihm ein Wort antworten, und wagte auch niemand von dem Tage an hinfort, ihn zu fragen.

23 Da redete Jesus zu dem Volk und zu seinen Jüngern

und sprach: Auf Mose's Stuhl sitzen die Schriftgelehrten und Pharisäer.

Alles nun, was sie euch sagen, daß ihr halten sollt, das haltet und tut's; aber nach ihren Werken sollt ihr nicht tun: sie sagen's wohl, und tun's nicht.

Sie binden aber schwere und unerträgliche Bürden und legen sie den Menschen auf den Hals; aber sie selbst wollen dieselben nicht mit einem Finger regen.

Alle ihre Werke aber tun sie, daß sie von den Leuten gesehen werden. Sie machen ihre Denkzettel breit und die Säume an ihren Kleidern groß.

Sie sitzen gern obenan über Tisch und in den Schulen

und haben's gern, daß sie gegrüßt werden auf dem Markt und von den Menschen Rabbi genannt werden.

Aber ihr sollt euch nicht Rabbi nennen lassen; denn einer ist euer Meister, Christus; ihr aber seid alle Brüder.

Und sollt niemand Vater heißen auf Erden, denn einer ist euer Vater, der im Himmel ist.

10 Und ihr sollt euch nicht lassen Meister nennen; denn einer ist euer Meister, Christus.

11 Der Größte unter euch soll euer Diener sein.

12 Denn wer sich selbst erhöht, der wird erniedrigt; und wer sich selbst erniedrigt, der wird erhöht.

13 Weh euch, Schriftgelehrte und Pharisäer, ihr Heuchler, die ihr das Himmelreich zuschließet vor den Menschen! Ihr kommt nicht hinein, und die hinein wollen, laßt ihr nicht hineingehen.

14 Weh euch, Schriftgelehrte und Pharisäer, ihr Heuchler, die ihr der Witwen Häuser fresset und wendet lange Gebete vor! Darum werdet ihr desto mehr Verdammnis empfangen.

15 Weh euch, Schriftgelehrte und Pharisäer, ihr Heuchler, die ihr Land und Wasser umziehet, daß ihr einen Judengenossen macht; und wenn er's geworden ist, macht ihr aus ihm ein Kind der Hölle, zwiefältig mehr denn ihr seid!

16 Weh euch, verblendete Leiter, die ihr sagt: "Wer da schwört bei dem Tempel, das ist nichts; wer aber schwört bei dem Gold am Tempel, der ist's schuldig."

17 Ihr Narren und Blinden! Was ist größer: das Gold oder der Tempel, der das Gold heiligt?

18 "Wer da schwört bei dem Altar, das ist nichts; wer aber schwört bei dem Opfer, das darauf ist, der ist's schuldig."

19 Ihr Narren und Blinden! Was ist größer: das Opfer oder der Altar, der das Opfer heiligt?

20 Darum, wer da schwört bei dem Altar, der schwört bei demselben und bei allem, was darauf ist.

21 Und wer da schwört bei dem Tempel, der schwört bei demselben und bei dem, der darin wohnt.

22 Und wer da schwört bei dem Himmel, der schwört bei dem Stuhl Gottes und bei dem, der darauf sitzt.

23 Weh euch, Schriftgelehrte und Pharisäer, ihr Heuchler, die ihr verzehntet die Minze, Dill und Kümmel, und laßt dahinten das Schwerste im Gesetz, nämlich das Gericht, die Barmherzigkeit und den Glauben! Dies soll man tun und jenes nicht lassen.

24 Ihr verblendeten Leiter, die ihr Mücken seihet und Kamele verschluckt!

25 Weh euch, Schriftgelehrte und Pharisäer, ihr Heuchler, die ihr die Becher und Schüsseln auswendig reinlich haltet, inwendig aber ist's voll Raubes und Fraßes!

26 Du blinder Pharisäer, reinige zum ersten das Inwendige an Becher und Schüssel, auf das auch das Auswendige rein werde!

27 Weh euch, Schriftgelehrte und Pharisäer, ihr Heuchler, die ihr gleich seid wie die übertünchten Gräber, welche auswendig hübsch scheinen, aber inwendig sind sie voller Totengebeine und alles Unflats!

28 Also auch ihr: von außen scheint ihr den Menschen fromm, aber in wendig seid ihr voller Heuchelei und Untugend.

29 Weh euch, Schriftgelehrte und Pharisäer, ihr Heuchler, die ihr der Propheten Gräber bauet und schmücket der Gerechten Gräber

30 und sprecht: Wären wir zu unsrer Väter Zeiten gewesen, so wollten wir nicht teilhaftig sein mit ihnen an der Propheten Blut!

31 So gebt ihr über euch selbst Zeugnis, daß ihr Kinder seid derer, die die Propheten getötet haben.

32 Wohlan, erfüllet auch ihr das Maß eurer Väter!

33 Ihr Schlangen und Otterngezücht! wie wollt ihr der höllischen Verdammnis entrinnen?

34 Darum siehe, ich sende zu euch Propheten und Weise und Schriftgelehrte; und deren werdet ihr etliche töten und kreuzigen, und etliche werdet ihr geißeln in ihren Schulen und werdet sie verfolgen von einer Stadt zu der anderen;

35 auf daß über euch komme all das gerechte Blut, das vergossen ist auf Erden, von dem Blut des gerechten Abel an bis auf das Blut des Zacharias, des Sohnes Berechja's, welchen ihr getötet habt zwischen dem Tempel und dem Altar.

36 Wahrlich ich sage euch, daß solches alles wird über dies Geschlecht kommen.

37 Jerusalem, Jerusalem, die du tötest die Propheten und steinigst, die zu dir gesandt sind! wie oft habe ich deine Kinder versammeln wollen, wie eine Henne versammelt ihre Küchlein unter ihre Flügel; und ihr habt nicht gewollt!

38 Siehe, euer Haus soll euch wüst gelassen werden.

39 Denn ich sage euch: Ihr werdet mich von jetzt an nicht sehen, bis ihr sprecht: Gelobt sei, der da kommt im Namen des HERRN!

Jesus Comes to Jerusalem as King(A)(B)

21 As they approached Jerusalem and came to Bethphage on the Mount of Olives,(C) Jesus sent two disciples, saying to them, “Go to the village ahead of you, and at once you will find a donkey tied there, with her colt by her. Untie them and bring them to me. If anyone says anything to you, say that the Lord needs them, and he will send them right away.”

This took place to fulfill(D) what was spoken through the prophet:

“Say to Daughter Zion,
    ‘See, your king comes to you,
gentle and riding on a donkey,
    and on a colt, the foal of a donkey.’”[a](E)

The disciples went and did as Jesus had instructed them. They brought the donkey and the colt and placed their cloaks on them for Jesus to sit on. A very large crowd spread their cloaks(F) on the road, while others cut branches from the trees and spread them on the road. The crowds that went ahead of him and those that followed shouted,

“Hosanna[b] to the Son of David!”(G)

“Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord!”[c](H)

“Hosanna[d] in the highest heaven!”(I)

10 When Jesus entered Jerusalem, the whole city was stirred and asked, “Who is this?”

11 The crowds answered, “This is Jesus, the prophet(J) from Nazareth in Galilee.”

Jesus at the Temple(K)

12 Jesus entered the temple courts and drove out all who were buying(L) and selling there. He overturned the tables of the money changers(M) and the benches of those selling doves.(N) 13 “It is written,” he said to them, “‘My house will be called a house of prayer,’[e](O) but you are making it ‘a den of robbers.’[f](P)

14 The blind and the lame came to him at the temple, and he healed them.(Q) 15 But when the chief priests and the teachers of the law saw the wonderful things he did and the children shouting in the temple courts, “Hosanna to the Son of David,”(R) they were indignant.(S)

16 “Do you hear what these children are saying?” they asked him.

“Yes,” replied Jesus, “have you never read,

“‘From the lips of children and infants
    you, Lord, have called forth your praise’[g]?”(T)

17 And he left them and went out of the city to Bethany,(U) where he spent the night.

Jesus Curses a Fig Tree(V)

18 Early in the morning, as Jesus was on his way back to the city, he was hungry. 19 Seeing a fig tree by the road, he went up to it but found nothing on it except leaves. Then he said to it, “May you never bear fruit again!” Immediately the tree withered.(W)

20 When the disciples saw this, they were amazed. “How did the fig tree wither so quickly?” they asked.

21 Jesus replied, “Truly I tell you, if you have faith and do not doubt,(X) not only can you do what was done to the fig tree, but also you can say to this mountain, ‘Go, throw yourself into the sea,’ and it will be done. 22 If you believe, you will receive whatever you ask for(Y) in prayer.”

The Authority of Jesus Questioned(Z)

23 Jesus entered the temple courts, and, while he was teaching, the chief priests and the elders of the people came to him. “By what authority(AA) are you doing these things?” they asked. “And who gave you this authority?”

24 Jesus replied, “I will also ask you one question. If you answer me, I will tell you by what authority I am doing these things. 25 John’s baptism—where did it come from? Was it from heaven, or of human origin?”

They discussed it among themselves and said, “If we say, ‘From heaven,’ he will ask, ‘Then why didn’t you believe him?’ 26 But if we say, ‘Of human origin’—we are afraid of the people, for they all hold that John was a prophet.”(AB)

27 So they answered Jesus, “We don’t know.”

Then he said, “Neither will I tell you by what authority I am doing these things.

The Parable of the Two Sons

28 “What do you think? There was a man who had two sons. He went to the first and said, ‘Son, go and work today in the vineyard.’(AC)

29 “‘I will not,’ he answered, but later he changed his mind and went.

30 “Then the father went to the other son and said the same thing. He answered, ‘I will, sir,’ but he did not go.

31 “Which of the two did what his father wanted?”

“The first,” they answered.

Jesus said to them, “Truly I tell you, the tax collectors(AD) and the prostitutes(AE) are entering the kingdom of God ahead of you. 32 For John came to you to show you the way of righteousness,(AF) and you did not believe him, but the tax collectors(AG) and the prostitutes(AH) did. And even after you saw this, you did not repent(AI) and believe him.

The Parable of the Tenants(AJ)

33 “Listen to another parable: There was a landowner who planted(AK) a vineyard. He put a wall around it, dug a winepress in it and built a watchtower.(AL) Then he rented the vineyard to some farmers and moved to another place.(AM) 34 When the harvest time approached, he sent his servants(AN) to the tenants to collect his fruit.

35 “The tenants seized his servants; they beat one, killed another, and stoned a third.(AO) 36 Then he sent other servants(AP) to them, more than the first time, and the tenants treated them the same way. 37 Last of all, he sent his son to them. ‘They will respect my son,’ he said.

38 “But when the tenants saw the son, they said to each other, ‘This is the heir.(AQ) Come, let’s kill him(AR) and take his inheritance.’(AS) 39 So they took him and threw him out of the vineyard and killed him.

40 “Therefore, when the owner of the vineyard comes, what will he do to those tenants?”

41 “He will bring those wretches to a wretched end,”(AT) they replied, “and he will rent the vineyard to other tenants,(AU) who will give him his share of the crop at harvest time.”

42 Jesus said to them, “Have you never read in the Scriptures:

“‘The stone the builders rejected
    has become the cornerstone;
the Lord has done this,
    and it is marvelous in our eyes’[h]?(AV)

43 “Therefore I tell you that the kingdom of God will be taken away from you(AW) and given to a people who will produce its fruit. 44 Anyone who falls on this stone will be broken to pieces; anyone on whom it falls will be crushed.”[i](AX)

45 When the chief priests and the Pharisees heard Jesus’ parables, they knew he was talking about them. 46 They looked for a way to arrest him, but they were afraid of the crowd because the people held that he was a prophet.(AY)

The Parable of the Wedding Banquet(AZ)

22 Jesus spoke to them again in parables, saying: “The kingdom of heaven is like(BA) a king who prepared a wedding banquet for his son. He sent his servants(BB) to those who had been invited to the banquet to tell them to come, but they refused to come.

“Then he sent some more servants(BC) and said, ‘Tell those who have been invited that I have prepared my dinner: My oxen and fattened cattle have been butchered, and everything is ready. Come to the wedding banquet.’

“But they paid no attention and went off—one to his field, another to his business. The rest seized his servants, mistreated them and killed them. The king was enraged. He sent his army and destroyed those murderers(BD) and burned their city.

“Then he said to his servants, ‘The wedding banquet is ready, but those I invited did not deserve to come. So go to the street corners(BE) and invite to the banquet anyone you find.’ 10 So the servants went out into the streets and gathered all the people they could find, the bad as well as the good,(BF) and the wedding hall was filled with guests.

11 “But when the king came in to see the guests, he noticed a man there who was not wearing wedding clothes. 12 He asked, ‘How did you get in here without wedding clothes, friend(BG)?’ The man was speechless.

13 “Then the king told the attendants, ‘Tie him hand and foot, and throw him outside, into the darkness, where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.’(BH)

14 “For many are invited, but few are chosen.”(BI)

Paying the Imperial Tax to Caesar(BJ)

15 Then the Pharisees went out and laid plans to trap him in his words. 16 They sent their disciples to him along with the Herodians.(BK) “Teacher,” they said, “we know that you are a man of integrity and that you teach the way of God in accordance with the truth. You aren’t swayed by others, because you pay no attention to who they are. 17 Tell us then, what is your opinion? Is it right to pay the imperial tax[j](BL) to Caesar or not?”

18 But Jesus, knowing their evil intent, said, “You hypocrites, why are you trying to trap me? 19 Show me the coin used for paying the tax.” They brought him a denarius, 20 and he asked them, “Whose image is this? And whose inscription?”

21 “Caesar’s,” they replied.

Then he said to them, “So give back to Caesar what is Caesar’s,(BM) and to God what is God’s.”

22 When they heard this, they were amazed. So they left him and went away.(BN)

Marriage at the Resurrection(BO)

23 That same day the Sadducees,(BP) who say there is no resurrection,(BQ) came to him with a question. 24 “Teacher,” they said, “Moses told us that if a man dies without having children, his brother must marry the widow and raise up offspring for him.(BR) 25 Now there were seven brothers among us. The first one married and died, and since he had no children, he left his wife to his brother. 26 The same thing happened to the second and third brother, right on down to the seventh. 27 Finally, the woman died. 28 Now then, at the resurrection, whose wife will she be of the seven, since all of them were married to her?”

29 Jesus replied, “You are in error because you do not know the Scriptures(BS) or the power of God. 30 At the resurrection people will neither marry nor be given in marriage;(BT) they will be like the angels in heaven. 31 But about the resurrection of the dead—have you not read what God said to you, 32 ‘I am the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob’[k]?(BU) He is not the God of the dead but of the living.”

33 When the crowds heard this, they were astonished at his teaching.(BV)

The Greatest Commandment(BW)

34 Hearing that Jesus had silenced the Sadducees,(BX) the Pharisees got together. 35 One of them, an expert in the law,(BY) tested him with this question: 36 “Teacher, which is the greatest commandment in the Law?”

37 Jesus replied: “‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.’[l](BZ) 38 This is the first and greatest commandment. 39 And the second is like it: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’[m](CA) 40 All the Law and the Prophets hang on these two commandments.”(CB)

Whose Son Is the Messiah?(CC)

41 While the Pharisees were gathered together, Jesus asked them, 42 “What do you think about the Messiah? Whose son is he?”

“The son of David,”(CD) they replied.

43 He said to them, “How is it then that David, speaking by the Spirit, calls him ‘Lord’? For he says,

44 “‘The Lord said to my Lord:
    “Sit at my right hand
until I put your enemies
    under your feet.”’[n](CE)

45 If then David calls him ‘Lord,’ how can he be his son?” 46 No one could say a word in reply, and from that day on no one dared to ask him any more questions.(CF)

A Warning Against Hypocrisy(CG)(CH)

23 Then Jesus said to the crowds and to his disciples: “The teachers of the law(CI) and the Pharisees sit in Moses’ seat. So you must be careful to do everything they tell you. But do not do what they do, for they do not practice what they preach. They tie up heavy, cumbersome loads and put them on other people’s shoulders, but they themselves are not willing to lift a finger to move them.(CJ)

“Everything they do is done for people to see:(CK) They make their phylacteries[o](CL) wide and the tassels on their garments(CM) long; they love the place of honor at banquets and the most important seats in the synagogues;(CN) they love to be greeted with respect in the marketplaces and to be called ‘Rabbi’ by others.(CO)

“But you are not to be called ‘Rabbi,’ for you have one Teacher, and you are all brothers. And do not call anyone on earth ‘father,’ for you have one Father,(CP) and he is in heaven. 10 Nor are you to be called instructors, for you have one Instructor, the Messiah. 11 The greatest among you will be your servant.(CQ) 12 For those who exalt themselves will be humbled, and those who humble themselves will be exalted.(CR)

Seven Woes on the Teachers of the Law and the Pharisees

13 “Woe to you, teachers of the law and Pharisees, you hypocrites!(CS) You shut the door of the kingdom of heaven in people’s faces. You yourselves do not enter, nor will you let those enter who are trying to.(CT) [14] [p]

15 “Woe to you, teachers of the law and Pharisees, you hypocrites! You travel over land and sea to win a single convert,(CU) and when you have succeeded, you make them twice as much a child of hell(CV) as you are.

16 “Woe to you, blind guides!(CW) You say, ‘If anyone swears by the temple, it means nothing; but anyone who swears by the gold of the temple is bound by that oath.’(CX) 17 You blind fools! Which is greater: the gold, or the temple that makes the gold sacred?(CY) 18 You also say, ‘If anyone swears by the altar, it means nothing; but anyone who swears by the gift on the altar is bound by that oath.’ 19 You blind men! Which is greater: the gift, or the altar that makes the gift sacred?(CZ) 20 Therefore, anyone who swears by the altar swears by it and by everything on it. 21 And anyone who swears by the temple swears by it and by the one who dwells(DA) in it. 22 And anyone who swears by heaven swears by God’s throne and by the one who sits on it.(DB)

23 “Woe to you, teachers of the law and Pharisees, you hypocrites! You give a tenth(DC) of your spices—mint, dill and cumin. But you have neglected the more important matters of the law—justice, mercy and faithfulness.(DD) You should have practiced the latter, without neglecting the former. 24 You blind guides!(DE) You strain out a gnat but swallow a camel.

25 “Woe to you, teachers of the law and Pharisees, you hypocrites! You clean the outside of the cup and dish,(DF) but inside they are full of greed and self-indulgence.(DG) 26 Blind Pharisee! First clean the inside of the cup and dish, and then the outside also will be clean.

27 “Woe to you, teachers of the law and Pharisees, you hypocrites! You are like whitewashed tombs,(DH) which look beautiful on the outside but on the inside are full of the bones of the dead and everything unclean. 28 In the same way, on the outside you appear to people as righteous but on the inside you are full of hypocrisy and wickedness.

29 “Woe to you, teachers of the law and Pharisees, you hypocrites! You build tombs for the prophets(DI) and decorate the graves of the righteous. 30 And you say, ‘If we had lived in the days of our ancestors, we would not have taken part with them in shedding the blood of the prophets.’ 31 So you testify against yourselves that you are the descendants of those who murdered the prophets.(DJ) 32 Go ahead, then, and complete(DK) what your ancestors started!(DL)

33 “You snakes! You brood of vipers!(DM) How will you escape being condemned to hell?(DN) 34 Therefore I am sending you prophets and sages and teachers. Some of them you will kill and crucify;(DO) others you will flog in your synagogues(DP) and pursue from town to town.(DQ) 35 And so upon you will come all the righteous blood that has been shed on earth, from the blood of righteous Abel(DR) to the blood of Zechariah son of Berekiah,(DS) whom you murdered between the temple and the altar.(DT) 36 Truly I tell you, all this will come on this generation.(DU)

37 “Jerusalem, Jerusalem, you who kill the prophets and stone those sent to you,(DV) how often I have longed to gather your children together, as a hen gathers her chicks under her wings,(DW) and you were not willing. 38 Look, your house is left to you desolate.(DX) 39 For I tell you, you will not see me again until you say, ‘Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord.’[q](DY)

And a very great multitude spread their garments in the way; others cut down branches from the trees, and strawed them in the way.

And the multitudes that went before, and that followed, cried, saying, Hosanna to the son of David: Blessed is he that cometh in the name of the Lord; Hosanna in the highest.

10 And when he was come into Jerusalem, all the city was moved, saying, Who is this?

11 And the multitude said, This is Jesus the prophet of Nazareth of Galilee.

12 And Jesus went into the temple of God, and cast out all them that sold and bought in the temple, and overthrew the tables of the moneychangers, and the seats of them that sold doves,

13 And said unto them, It is written, My house shall be called the house of prayer; but ye have made it a den of thieves.

14 And the blind and the lame came to him in the temple; and he healed them.

15 And when the chief priests and scribes saw the wonderful things that he did, and the children crying in the temple, and saying, Hosanna to the son of David; they were sore displeased,

16 And said unto him, Hearest thou what these say? And Jesus saith unto them, Yea; have ye never read, Out of the mouth of babes and sucklings thou hast perfected praise?

17 And he left them, and went out of the city into Bethany; and he lodged there.

18 Now in the morning as he returned into the city, he hungered.

19 And when he saw a fig tree in the way, he came to it, and found nothing thereon, but leaves only, and said unto it, Let no fruit grow on thee henceforward for ever. And presently the fig tree withered away.

20 And when the disciples saw it, they marvelled, saying, How soon is the fig tree withered away!

21 Jesus answered and said unto them, Verily I say unto you, If ye have faith, and doubt not, ye shall not only do this which is done to the fig tree, but also if ye shall say unto this mountain, Be thou removed, and be thou cast into the sea; it shall be done.

22 And all things, whatsoever ye shall ask in prayer, believing, ye shall receive.

23 And when he was come into the temple, the chief priests and the elders of the people came unto him as he was teaching, and said, By what authority doest thou these things? and who gave thee this authority?

24 And Jesus answered and said unto them, I also will ask you one thing, which if ye tell me, I in like wise will tell you by what authority I do these things.

25 The baptism of John, whence was it? from heaven, or of men? And they reasoned with themselves, saying, If we shall say, From heaven; he will say unto us, Why did ye not then believe him?

26 But if we shall say, Of men; we fear the people; for all hold John as a prophet.

27 And they answered Jesus, and said, We cannot tell. And he said unto them, Neither tell I you by what authority I do these things.

28 But what think ye? A certain man had two sons; and he came to the first, and said, Son, go work to day in my vineyard.

29 He answered and said, I will not: but afterward he repented, and went.

30 And he came to the second, and said likewise. And he answered and said, I go, sir: and went not.

31 Whether of them twain did the will of his father? They say unto him, The first. Jesus saith unto them, Verily I say unto you, That the publicans and the harlots go into the kingdom of God before you.

32 For John came unto you in the way of righteousness, and ye believed him not: but the publicans and the harlots believed him: and ye, when ye had seen it, repented not afterward, that ye might believe him.

33 Hear another parable: There was a certain householder, which planted a vineyard, and hedged it round about, and digged a winepress in it, and built a tower, and let it out to husbandmen, and went into a far country:

34 And when the time of the fruit drew near, he sent his servants to the husbandmen, that they might receive the fruits of it.

35 And the husbandmen took his servants, and beat one, and killed another, and stoned another.

36 Again, he sent other servants more than the first: and they did unto them likewise.

37 But last of all he sent unto them his son, saying, They will reverence my son.

38 But when the husbandmen saw the son, they said among themselves, This is the heir; come, let us kill him, and let us seize on his inheritance.

39 And they caught him, and cast him out of the vineyard, and slew him.

40 When the lord therefore of the vineyard cometh, what will he do unto those husbandmen?

41 They say unto him, He will miserably destroy those wicked men, and will let out his vineyard unto other husbandmen, which shall render him the fruits in their seasons.

42 Jesus saith unto them, Did ye never read in the scriptures, The stone which the builders rejected, the same is become the head of the corner: this is the Lord's doing, and it is marvellous in our eyes?

43 Therefore say I unto you, The kingdom of God shall be taken from you, and given to a nation bringing forth the fruits thereof.

44 And whosoever shall fall on this stone shall be broken: but on whomsoever it shall fall, it will grind him to powder.

45 And when the chief priests and Pharisees had heard his parables, they perceived that he spake of them.

46 But when they sought to lay hands on him, they feared the multitude, because they took him for a prophet.

22 And Jesus answered and spake unto them again by parables, and said,

The kingdom of heaven is like unto a certain king, which made a marriage for his son,

And sent forth his servants to call them that were bidden to the wedding: and they would not come.

Again, he sent forth other servants, saying, Tell them which are bidden, Behold, I have prepared my dinner: my oxen and my fatlings are killed, and all things are ready: come unto the marriage.

But they made light of it, and went their ways, one to his farm, another to his merchandise:

And the remnant took his servants, and entreated them spitefully, and slew them.

But when the king heard thereof, he was wroth: and he sent forth his armies, and destroyed those murderers, and burned up their city.

Then saith he to his servants, The wedding is ready, but they which were bidden were not worthy.

Go ye therefore into the highways, and as many as ye shall find, bid to the marriage.

10 So those servants went out into the highways, and gathered together all as many as they found, both bad and good: and the wedding was furnished with guests.

11 And when the king came in to see the guests, he saw there a man which had not on a wedding garment:

12 And he saith unto him, Friend, how camest thou in hither not having a wedding garment? And he was speechless.

13 Then said the king to the servants, Bind him hand and foot, and take him away, and cast him into outer darkness, there shall be weeping and gnashing of teeth.

14 For many are called, but few are chosen.

15 Then went the Pharisees, and took counsel how they might entangle him in his talk.

16 And they sent out unto him their disciples with the Herodians, saying, Master, we know that thou art true, and teachest the way of God in truth, neither carest thou for any man: for thou regardest not the person of men.

17 Tell us therefore, What thinkest thou? Is it lawful to give tribute unto Caesar, or not?

18 But Jesus perceived their wickedness, and said, Why tempt ye me, ye hypocrites?

19 Shew me the tribute money. And they brought unto him a penny.

20 And he saith unto them, Whose is this image and superscription?

21 They say unto him, Caesar's. Then saith he unto them, Render therefore unto Caesar the things which are Caesar's; and unto God the things that are God's.

22 When they had heard these words, they marvelled, and left him, and went their way.

23 The same day came to him the Sadducees, which say that there is no resurrection, and asked him,

24 Saying, Master, Moses said, If a man die, having no children, his brother shall marry his wife, and raise up seed unto his brother.

25 Now there were with us seven brethren: and the first, when he had married a wife, deceased, and, having no issue, left his wife unto his brother:

26 Likewise the second also, and the third, unto the seventh.

27 And last of all the woman died also.

28 Therefore in the resurrection whose wife shall she be of the seven? for they all had her.

29 Jesus answered and said unto them, Ye do err, not knowing the scriptures, nor the power of God.

30 For in the resurrection they neither marry, nor are given in marriage, but are as the angels of God in heaven.

31 But as touching the resurrection of the dead, have ye not read that which was spoken unto you by God, saying,

32 I am the God of Abraham, and the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob? God is not the God of the dead, but of the living.

34 But when the Pharisees had heard that he had put the Sadducees to silence, they were gathered together.

35 Then one of them, which was a lawyer, asked him a question, tempting him, and saying,

36 Master, which is the great commandment in the law?

37 Jesus said unto him, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind.

38 This is the first and great commandment.

39 And the second is like unto it, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself.

40 On these two commandments hang all the law and the prophets.

41 While the Pharisees were gathered together, Jesus asked them,

42 Saying, What think ye of Christ? whose son is he? They say unto him, The son of David.

43 He saith unto them, How then doth David in spirit call him Lord, saying,

44 The Lord said unto my Lord, Sit thou on my right hand, till I make thine enemies thy footstool?

45 If David then call him Lord, how is he his son?

46 And no man was able to answer him a word, neither durst any man from that day forth ask him any more questions.

23 Then spake Jesus to the multitude, and to his disciples,

Saying The scribes and the Pharisees sit in Moses' seat:

All therefore whatsoever they bid you observe, that observe and do; but do not ye after their works: for they say, and do not.

For they bind heavy burdens and grievous to be borne, and lay them on men's shoulders; but they themselves will not move them with one of their fingers.

But all their works they do for to be seen of men: they make broad their phylacteries, and enlarge the borders of their garments,

And love the uppermost rooms at feasts, and the chief seats in the synagogues,

And greetings in the markets, and to be called of men, Rabbi, Rabbi.

But be not ye called Rabbi: for one is your Master, even Christ; and all ye are brethren.

And call no man your father upon the earth: for one is your Father, which is in heaven.

10 Neither be ye called masters: for one is your Master, even Christ.

11 But he that is greatest among you shall be your servant.

12 And whosoever shall exalt himself shall be abased; and he that shall humble himself shall be exalted.

13 But woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye shut up the kingdom of heaven against men: for ye neither go in yourselves, neither suffer ye them that are entering to go in.

14 Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye devour widows' houses, and for a pretence make long prayer: therefore ye shall receive the greater damnation.

15 Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye compass sea and land to make one proselyte, and when he is made, ye make him twofold more the child of hell than yourselves.

16 Woe unto you, ye blind guides, which say, Whosoever shall swear by the temple, it is nothing; but whosoever shall swear by the gold of the temple, he is a debtor!

17 Ye fools and blind: for whether is greater, the gold, or the temple that sanctifieth the gold?

18 And, Whosoever shall swear by the altar, it is nothing; but whosoever sweareth by the gift that is upon it, he is guilty.

19 Ye fools and blind: for whether is greater, the gift, or the altar that sanctifieth the gift?

20 Whoso therefore shall swear by the altar, sweareth by it, and by all things thereon.

21 And whoso shall swear by the temple, sweareth by it, and by him that dwelleth therein.

22 And he that shall swear by heaven, sweareth by the throne of God, and by him that sitteth thereon.

23 Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye pay tithe of mint and anise and cummin, and have omitted the weightier matters of the law, judgment, mercy, and faith: these ought ye to have done, and not to leave the other undone.

24 Ye blind guides, which strain at a gnat, and swallow a camel.

25 Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye make clean the outside of the cup and of the platter, but within they are full of extortion and excess.

26 Thou blind Pharisee, cleanse first that which is within the cup and platter, that the outside of them may be clean also.

27 Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye are like unto whited sepulchres, which indeed appear beautiful outward, but are within full of dead men's bones, and of all uncleanness.

28 Even so ye also outwardly appear righteous unto men, but within ye are full of hypocrisy and iniquity.

29 Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! because ye build the tombs of the prophets, and garnish the sepulchres of the righteous,

30 And say, If we had been in the days of our fathers, we would not have been partakers with them in the blood of the prophets.

31 Wherefore ye be witnesses unto yourselves, that ye are the children of them which killed the prophets.

32 Fill ye up then the measure of your fathers.

33 Ye serpents, ye generation of vipers, how can ye escape the damnation of hell?

34 Wherefore, behold, I send unto you prophets, and wise men, and scribes: and some of them ye shall kill and crucify; and some of them shall ye scourge in your synagogues, and persecute them from city to city:

35 That upon you may come all the righteous blood shed upon the earth, from the blood of righteous Abel unto the blood of Zacharias son of Barachias, whom ye slew between the temple and the altar.

36 Verily I say unto you, All these things shall come upon this generation.

37 O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, thou that killest the prophets, and stonest them which are sent unto thee, how often would I have gathered thy children together, even as a hen gathereth her chickens under her wings, and ye would not!

38 Behold, your house is left unto you desolate.

39 For I say unto you, Ye shall not see me henceforth, till ye shall say, Blessed is he that cometh in the name of the Lord.

The Triumphal Entry

21 (A)Now when they drew near to Jerusalem and came to Bethphage, to (B)the Mount of Olives, then Jesus (C)sent two disciples, saying to them, “Go into the village in front of you, and immediately you will find a donkey tied, and a colt with her. Untie them and bring them to me. If anyone says anything to you, you shall say, ‘The Lord needs them,’ and he will send them at once.” This took place (D)to fulfill what was spoken by the prophet, saying,

(E)“Say to the daughter of Zion,
‘Behold, your king is coming to you,
    (F)humble, and mounted on a donkey,
    on a colt,[a] the foal of a beast of burden.’”

The disciples went and did as Jesus had directed them. They brought the donkey and the colt and put on them their cloaks, and he sat on them. Most of the crowd (G)spread their cloaks on the road, and others cut branches from the trees and spread them on the road. And the crowds that went before him and that followed him were shouting, (H)“Hosanna to (I)the Son of David! (J)Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord! Hosanna (K)in the highest!” 10 And (L)when he entered Jerusalem, the whole city was stirred up, saying, “Who is this?” 11 And the crowds said, “This is (M)the prophet Jesus, (N)from Nazareth of Galilee.”

Jesus Cleanses the Temple

12 (O)And Jesus entered the temple[b] and drove out all who sold and bought in the temple, and he overturned the tables of (P)the money-changers and the seats of those who sold (Q)pigeons. 13 He said to them, “It is written, (R)‘My house shall be called a house of prayer,’ but (S)you make it a den of robbers.”

14 (T)And the blind and the lame came to him in the temple, and he healed them. 15 (U)But when the chief priests and the scribes saw the wonderful things that he did, and the children crying out in the temple, (V)“Hosanna to the Son of David!” they were indignant, 16 and they said to him, “Do you hear what these are saying?” And Jesus said to them, “Yes; (W)have you never read,

(X)“‘Out of the mouth of (Y)infants and nursing babies
    you have prepared praise’?”

17 And (Z)leaving them, he (AA)went out of the city to (AB)Bethany and lodged there.

Jesus Curses the Fig Tree

18 (AC)In the morning, as he was returning to the city, (AD)he became hungry. 19 (AE)And seeing a fig tree by the wayside, he went to it and found nothing on it but only leaves. And he said to it, “May no fruit ever come from you again!” And the fig tree withered at once.

20 When the disciples saw it, they marveled, saying, “How did the fig tree wither at once?” 21 And Jesus answered them, (AF)“Truly, I say to you, (AG)if you have faith and (AH)do not doubt, you will not only do what has been done to the fig tree, but even if you say to this mountain, (AI)‘Be taken up and thrown into the sea,’ it will happen. 22 And (AJ)whatever you ask in prayer, you will receive, (AK)if you have faith.”

The Authority of Jesus Challenged

23 (AL)And when he entered the temple, the chief priests and the elders of the people came up to him (AM)as he was teaching, and said, (AN)“By what authority are you doing these things, and who gave you this authority?” 24 Jesus answered them, “I also will ask you one question, and if you tell me the answer, then I also will tell you by what authority I do these things. 25 The baptism of John, (AO)from where did it come? (AP)From heaven or from man?” And they discussed it among themselves, saying, “If we say, ‘From heaven,’ he will say to us, (AQ)‘Why then did you not believe him?’ 26 But if we say, ‘From man,’ (AR)we are afraid of the crowd, for they all hold that John was (AS)a prophet.” 27 So they answered Jesus, “We do not know.” And he said to them, “Neither will I tell you by what authority I do these things.

The Parable of the Two Sons

28 (AT)“What do you think? A man had two sons. And he went to the first and said, ‘Son, go and work in (AU)the vineyard today.’ 29 And he answered, ‘I will not,’ but afterward he (AV)changed his mind and went. 30 And he went to the other son and said the same. And he answered, ‘I will, sir,’ but did not go. 31 Which of the two did the will of his father?” They said, “The first.” Jesus said to them, “Truly, I say to you, (AW)the tax collectors and (AX)the prostitutes go into (AY)the kingdom of God before you. 32 For John came to you (AZ)in the way of righteousness, and (BA)you did not believe him, but (BB)the tax collectors and the prostitutes believed him. And even when you saw it, you did not afterward (BC)change your minds and believe him.

The Parable of the Tenants

33 (BD)“Hear another parable. There was a master of a house who planted (BE)a vineyard (BF)and put a fence around it and dug a winepress in it and built a tower and (BG)leased it to tenants, and (BH)went into another country. 34 When the season for fruit drew near, he sent his servants[c] to the tenants (BI)to get his fruit. 35 (BJ)And the tenants took his servants and beat one, killed another, and (BK)stoned another. 36 (BL)Again he sent other servants, more than the first. And they did the same to them. 37 Finally he sent his son to them, saying, ‘They will respect my son.’ 38 But when the tenants saw the son, they said to themselves, (BM)‘This is the heir. Come, (BN)let us kill him and have his inheritance.’ 39 And they took him and (BO)threw him out of the vineyard and killed him. 40 (BP)When therefore the owner of the vineyard comes, what will he do to those tenants?” 41 They said to him, (BQ)“He will put those wretches to a miserable death and (BR)let out the vineyard to other tenants who will give him the fruits in their seasons.”

42 Jesus said to them, (BS)“Have you never read in the Scriptures:

(BT)“‘The stone that the builders rejected
    has become the cornerstone;[d]
this was the Lord's doing,
    and it is marvelous in our eyes’?

43 Therefore I tell you, the kingdom of God (BU)will be taken away from you and given to a people (BV)producing its fruits. 44 And (BW)the one who falls on this stone will be broken to pieces; and (BX)when it falls on anyone, it will crush him.”[e]

45 When the chief priests and the Pharisees heard his parables, they perceived that he was speaking about them. 46 And (BY)although they were seeking to arrest him, (BZ)they feared the crowds, because they held him to be (CA)a prophet.

The Parable of the Wedding Feast

22 And again Jesus (CB)spoke to them in parables, saying, (CC)“The kingdom of heaven may be compared to a king who gave (CD)a wedding feast for his son, and (CE)sent his servants[f] to call those who were invited to the wedding feast, but they would not come. (CF)Again he sent other servants, saying, ‘Tell those who are invited, “See, I have prepared my (CG)dinner, (CH)my oxen and my fat calves have been slaughtered, and everything is ready. Come to the wedding feast.”’ But (CI)they paid no attention and went off, one to his farm, another to his business, while the rest seized his servants, (CJ)treated them shamefully, and (CK)killed them. The king was angry, and he sent his troops and (CL)destroyed those murderers and burned their city. Then he said to his servants, ‘The wedding feast is ready, but those invited were not (CM)worthy. Go therefore to the main roads and invite to the wedding feast as many as you find.’ 10 And those servants went out into the roads and (CN)gathered all whom they found, both bad and good. So the wedding hall was filled with guests.

11 “But when the king came in to look at the guests, he saw there (CO)a man who had no wedding garment. 12 And he said to him, (CP)‘Friend, how did you get in here without a wedding garment?’ And he was speechless. 13 Then the king said to the attendants, ‘Bind him hand and foot and (CQ)cast him into the outer darkness. In that place (CR)there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.’ 14 For many are (CS)called, but few are (CT)chosen.”

Paying Taxes to Caesar

15 (CU)Then the Pharisees went and plotted how (CV)to entangle him in his words. 16 And they sent (CW)their disciples to him, along with (CX)the Herodians, saying, “Teacher, (CY)we know that you are true and teach (CZ)the way of God truthfully, and you do not care about anyone's opinion, for (DA)you are not swayed by appearances.[g] 17 Tell us, then, what you think. Is it lawful to pay (DB)taxes to (DC)Caesar, or not?” 18 But Jesus, aware of their malice, said, “Why (DD)put me to the test, you hypocrites? 19 Show me the coin for the tax.” And they brought him a denarius.[h] 20 And Jesus said to them, “Whose likeness and inscription is this?” 21 They said, “Caesar's.” Then he said to them, (DE)“Therefore render to Caesar the things that are Caesar's, and to God the things that are God's.” 22 When they heard it, they marveled. And they (DF)left him and went away.

Sadducees Ask About the Resurrection

23 The same day (DG)Sadducees came to him, (DH)who say that there is no resurrection, and they asked him a question, 24 saying, “Teacher, Moses said, (DI)‘If a man dies having no children, his brother must marry the widow and raise up offspring for his brother.’ 25 Now there were seven brothers among us. The first married and died, and having no offspring left his wife to his brother. 26 So too the second and third, down to the seventh. 27 After them all, the woman died. 28 In the resurrection, therefore, of the seven, whose wife will she be? For they all had her.”

29 But Jesus answered them, “You are wrong, (DJ)because you know neither the Scriptures nor (DK)the power of God. 30 For in the resurrection they neither (DL)marry nor (DM)are given in marriage, but are like angels in heaven. 31 And as for the resurrection of the dead, (DN)have you not read what was said to you by God: 32 (DO)‘I am the God of Abraham, and the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob’? He is not God of the dead, but of the living.” 33 And when the crowd heard it, (DP)they were astonished at his teaching.

The Great Commandment

34 (DQ)But when the Pharisees heard that he had silenced (DR)the Sadducees, they gathered together. 35 (DS)And one of them, (DT)a lawyer, asked him a question (DU)to test him. 36 “Teacher, which is the great commandment in the Law?” 37 And he said to him, (DV)“You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind. 38 This is the great and first commandment. 39 And (DW)a second is like it: (DX)You shall love your neighbor as yourself. 40 (DY)On these two commandments depend (DZ)all the Law and the Prophets.”

Whose Son Is the Christ?

41 (EA)Now while the Pharisees (EB)were gathered together, Jesus asked them a question, 42 saying, “What do you think about (EC)the Christ? Whose son is he?” They said to him, (ED)“The son of David.” 43 He said to them, “How is it then that David, (EE)in the Spirit, calls him Lord, saying,

44 (EF)“‘The Lord said to my Lord,
“Sit at my right hand,
    until I put your enemies under your feet”’?

45 If then David calls him Lord, (EG)how is he his son?” 46 (EH)And no one was able to answer him a word, (EI)nor from that day did anyone dare to ask him any more questions.

Seven Woes to the Scribes and Pharisees

23 Then Jesus (EJ)said to the crowds and to his disciples, (EK)“The scribes and the Pharisees (EL)sit on Moses' seat, so do and observe whatever they tell you, (EM)but not the works they do. (EN)For they preach, but do not practice. (EO)They tie up heavy burdens, hard to bear,[i] and lay them on people's shoulders, but they themselves are not willing to move them with their finger. (EP)They do all their deeds (EQ)to be seen by others. For they make (ER)their phylacteries broad and (ES)their fringes long, and they (ET)love the place of honor at feasts and (EU)the best seats in the synagogues and (EV)greetings in (EW)the marketplaces and being called (EX)rabbi[j] by others. (EY)But you are not to be called rabbi, for you have one teacher, and you are (EZ)all brothers.[k] (FA)And call no man your father on earth, for (FB)you have one Father, who is in heaven. 10 Neither be called instructors, for you have one instructor, (FC)the Christ. 11 (FD)The greatest among you shall be your servant. 12 (FE)Whoever exalts himself will be humbled, and whoever humbles himself will be exalted.

13 “But woe (FF)to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you (FG)shut the kingdom of heaven in people's faces. For you (FH)neither enter yourselves nor allow those who would enter to go in.[l] 15 Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you travel across sea and land to make a single (FI)proselyte, and when he becomes a proselyte, you make him twice as much a (FJ)child of (FK)hell[m] as yourselves.

16 “Woe to (FL)you, (FM)blind guides, who say, (FN)‘If anyone swears by the temple, it is nothing, but if anyone swears by the gold of the temple, he is bound by his oath.’ 17 You blind fools! For which is greater, the gold or (FO)the temple that has made the gold sacred? 18 And you say, ‘If anyone swears by the altar, it is nothing, but if anyone swears by (FP)the gift that is on the altar, he is bound by his oath.’ 19 You blind men! For which is greater, the gift or (FQ)the altar that makes the gift sacred? 20 So whoever swears by the altar swears by it and by everything on it. 21 And whoever swears by the temple swears by it and by (FR)him who dwells in it. 22 And whoever swears by (FS)heaven swears by (FT)the throne of God and by (FU)him who sits upon it.

23 (FV)“Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For (FW)you tithe mint and dill and (FX)cumin, and have neglected the weightier matters of the law: (FY)justice and mercy and faithfulness. (FZ)These you ought to have done, without neglecting the others. 24 You blind guides, straining out a gnat and swallowing (GA)a camel!

25 (GB)“Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For (GC)you clean the outside of (GD)the cup and the plate, but inside they are full of (GE)greed and self-indulgence. 26 You blind Pharisee! First clean the inside of (GF)the cup and the plate, that the outside also may be clean.

27 (GG)“Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you are like (GH)whitewashed tombs, which outwardly appear beautiful, but within are full of dead people's bones and (GI)all uncleanness. 28 So you also (GJ)outwardly appear righteous to others, but within you are full of (GK)hypocrisy and lawlessness.

29 (GL)“Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you build the tombs of the prophets and decorate the monuments of the righteous, 30 saying, ‘If we had lived in the days of our fathers, we would not have taken part with them in shedding the blood of the prophets.’ 31 Thus you witness against yourselves that you are (GM)sons of those who murdered the prophets. 32 (GN)Fill up, then, the measure of your fathers. 33 You serpents, (GO)you brood of vipers, how are you to escape being sentenced to (GP)hell? 34 (GQ)Therefore (GR)I send you (GS)prophets and wise men and (GT)scribes, (GU)some of whom you will kill and crucify, and (GV)some you will (GW)flog in your synagogues and (GX)persecute from town to town, 35 so that on you may come all (GY)the righteous blood shed on earth, from the blood of righteous (GZ)Abel to the blood of (HA)Zechariah the son of Barachiah,[n] whom you murdered between (HB)the sanctuary and (HC)the altar. 36 Truly, I say to you, (HD)all these things will come upon this generation.

Lament over Jerusalem

37 (HE)“O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, the city that (HF)kills the prophets and stones those who are sent to it! How often would I have (HG)gathered (HH)your children together (HI)as a hen gathers her brood (HJ)under her wings, and (HK)you were not willing! 38 See, (HL)your house is left to you desolate. 39 For I tell you, you will not see me again, until you say, (HM)‘Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord.’”
